FEDERAL GOVERNMENT DECLARES HOLIDAY TO MARK EID-UL-MAWLID
The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, as a public holiday in commemoration of Eid-ul-Mawlid, the annual celebration marking the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government through a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani.
FG Congratulates Muslims on Eid-ul-Mawlid
In his message, the Minister congratulated Muslims across Nigeria and in the diaspora on the occasion of the celebration, urging them to use the period to reflect on the exemplary life and teachings of Prophet Muhammad.
According to him, Eid-ul-Mawlid presents an opportunity for Nigerians to embrace the virtues of compassion, humility, kindness, peace, and selfless service, which the Holy Prophet demonstrated throughout his lifetime.
“Every Eid-ul-Mawlid gives us reason to pause and draw lessons from a life defined by compassion, humility and service to others. These are qualities our nation needs now more than ever, and I encourage every Nigerian, not just our Muslim brothers and sisters, to reflect on them,” the Minister stated.
Call for Peace and National Unity
Dr. Tunji-Ojo also called on Nigerians to continue praying for the peace, stability, and unity of the country, stressing that national development can only be achieved when citizens remain committed to peaceful coexistence and mutual understanding.
He urged Nigerians, irrespective of religion or ethnicity, to celebrate the occasion responsibly, show love to one another, and promote tolerance in their various communities.
Celebrate Responsibly
The Federal Government further encouraged Muslims to celebrate the festival with moderation, gratitude, and respect for others while extending goodwill to the less privileged during the festive period.
The Minister wished all Muslims a peaceful and joyous Eid-ul-Mawlid celebration and prayed for continued peace, progress, and prosperity for Nigeria.
The declaration of Tuesday, August 25, 2026, as a public holiday means that government offices, public institutions, banks, and many private establishments across the country are expected to observe the holiday in honour of the Islamic celebration.
