FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO REPLACE NYSC KHAKI UNIFORM WITH ADIRE, INTRODUCES MAJOR REFORMS

The Federal Government has announced plans to replace the traditional National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) khaki uniform with locally produced Adire fabric as part of a comprehensive reform aimed at repositioning the NYSC scheme and promoting Nigeria’s local textile industry.

The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, made the announcement on Thursday during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief. According to him, the decision is designed to encourage local production, create jobs, and ensure that government spending benefits the Nigerian economy.

Speaking on the proposed uniform change, the minister said:

“It’s Adire. So, Adire is being produced in Nigeria. We have them in Ogun, we have them in Kwara, we have textile industry. Let’s put our money back into the country.”

Corps Members to Be Posted Based on Their Courses of Study

As part of the approved reforms, corps members will increasingly be deployed according to their academic qualifications and professional backgrounds.

For example, graduates who studied education will be posted to schools, while other professionals will be assigned to organizations that align with their fields of study. This new approach is expected to make the NYSC scheme more practical, relevant, and impactful.

According to the minister, the posting process will begin during the orientation camp, where corps members’ profiles and career paths will be considered before deployment.

New Deployment Strategy to Improve Security

The Federal Government is also considering a new deployment policy that will allow many prospective corps members to serve in regions where they studied or are already familiar with the environment, especially in areas facing security challenges.

The minister explained that this would reduce the need for redeployment requests while addressing security concerns raised by parents and prospective corps members.

However, those willing to serve in other parts of the country, including the North-East, will still have the opportunity to do so voluntarily.

Military Will Remain Part of NYSC

Olawande dismissed reports suggesting that the military would be removed from the NYSC scheme.

He clarified that while the operational leadership of the scheme will now be headed by a civilian, the military will continue to provide security support for corps members across the country.

FEC Approves Comprehensive NYSC Reforms

The reforms follow the approval by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) of the first major overhaul of the NYSC scheme since it was established in 1973.

As part of the implementation process, the FEC has directed the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Federal Ministry of Youth Development to amend the NYSC Act and its operational regulations to accommodate the approved changes.
