UNIVERSITY ON THE NIGER, UMUNYA RECEIVES FULL STATUTORY LICENCE FROM FEDERAL GOVERNMENT

The University on the Niger, Umunya, Anambra State, has officially received a Full Statutory Licence from the Federal Government of Nigeria through the National Universities Commission (NUC), formally recognising the institution as a fully licensed private university in Nigeria.

The development marks a significant milestone in the history and institutional development of the university, following the successful completion of its probationary period after its initial licensing and the commencement of academic activities in 2023.

UNIVERSITY COMPLETES PROBATIONARY LICENSING PERIOD

The grant of the Full Statutory Licence represents the completion of the university’s transition from its initial Provisional Licence to full statutory recognition.

The development follows the university’s participation in the institutional assessment and accreditation processes conducted by the National Universities Commission in April 2026.

During the assessment, the NUC evaluated several aspects of the university’s operations and capacity, including its academic programmes, faculty quality, governance structures, infrastructure, library and learning resources, quality assurance systems and overall capacity to sustain university education in accordance with required standards.

Following the successful assessment, the university was granted the Full Statutory Licence.

The transition from a Provisional Licence to a Full Statutory Licence represents an important stage in the institutional development of University on the Niger.

It reflects the outcome of the university’s institutional assessment and its development in areas including academic standards, governance, quality assurance and the provision of higher education.
