FEDERAL UNIVERSITY, WUKARI (FUWUKARI) GETS MDCN ACCREDITATION FOR MBBS PROGRAMME

In a landmark achievement that marks a new era in the institution’s academic journey, the Federal University Wukari (FUWUKARI), Taraba State, has officially received provisional approval for pre-clinical accreditation from the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) for its Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme.

This approval follows a thorough verification visitation conducted by the MDCN on 3rd July, 2025, during which the council assessed the college’s readiness to begin full pre-clinical medical education. In a formal letter dated 8th July, 2025, and signed by the Registrar and CEO of MDCN, Prof. Fatima Kyari, the council conveyed its decision to the university’s Vice Chancellor, thereby lifting the long-standing ban on the admission of medical students into the MBBS programme.

According to the letter, the Council’s decision allows the university to resume admission into the MBBS programme starting from the 2025/2026 academic session, signaling a huge milestone for both the institution and prospective medical students in the region.

The letter also emphasized the importance of keeping the Council informed of any scheduled Part I professional (MBBS) examinations, to allow for the presence of MDCN observers. This step ensures that standards are upheld and that the integrity of the professional medical training process is maintained.

This accreditation is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the university management, the College of Medical Sciences, and the entire academic community, who have worked tirelessly over the years to meet the rigorous standards required by the Council. It also reflects FUWUKARI’s growing reputation as a center of academic excellence in Nigeria’s higher education landscape.

The Provost of the College of Medical Sciences, Federal University Wukari, expressed profound gratitude to the MDCN for its support and guidance throughout the accreditation process. He also acknowledged the efforts of faculty, staff, and stakeholders who contributed to achieving this significant goal.

With this development, FUWUKARI is now poised to produce competent and well-trained medical doctors who will contribute meaningfully to the Nigerian healthcare system, particularly in Taraba State and the North-East region of the country. The restoration of admission into the MBBS programme is expected to attract a new wave of enthusiastic students eager to pursue careers in medicine.

This approval by the MDCN not only strengthens the academic standing of the university but also addresses the healthcare manpower gap by opening opportunities for more qualified doctors to be trained within Nigeria.

As FUWUKARI prepares to welcome its next generation of medical students, the university community celebrates this milestone with great pride and optimism for the future.

Congratulations to the university community on this great achievement!
