The Federal Government has announced that the disinfection of schools against the spread of COVID-19 in preparation for the resumption of class activities has begun today Tuesday July 7, 2020.

This was disclosed by the Minister of Environment, Muhammad Mahmood, in Abuja at the briefing of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19.

According to the Minister, the decontamination and disinfection exercise was intentionally delayed to ensure that the chemicals were effective enough when the schools resume. The process is expected to last through Tuesday and the rest of the week.

He encouraged Parents to release their children and assured them that the schools would be safe for learning activities.

The management of Ajayi Crowther University released a circular containing guidelines to the school’s examination to be taken online due to COVID_19.

In the secular that has since gone viral, the university management pleaded with parents to act as invigilators during the course of the exams to prevent their wards from cheating.

c. Pre-Degree programme (Science): A candidate must have at least five (5) O’level credits including English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics in not more than two sittings.

d. Pre – Degree programme (French): A candidate must have at least five (5) O’level credits including English Language, Mathematics, French, Literature in English and any other in not more than two sittings.

a. Interested applicants should go to any Commercial Bank and make a payment in favour of Federal University Lafia, TSA Account (Please note that there is no use of Account Number). Present payment receipt issued at the Bank to the School of Basic and Remedial Studies for Confirmation and issuance of payment receipt.

(a) National Diploma Programmes

SSCE or WASCE or GCE ‘0’ Level or NECO or NABTEB with at least 5 Credits obtained at not more than 2 sittings, which must include English Language, Mathematics and three other relevant subjects related to the programme of study.

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has stated that the use of face mask will be compulsory for candidates that will be taking the Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE), which is to commence on August 3. This was disclosed by the Head of National Office of the organisation in Nigeria, Mr Patrick Areghan, at a news conference held at WAEC headquarters in Yaba, Lagos on Tuesday.

He said that holding the exam at this time that the pandemic is raging is a delicate one and such all involved must protect themselves and the people around them to help curb the spread of the virus in the country.

He stated that in view of this, all the government’s guidelines and protocols including social\physical distancing and the wearing of face masks by all the candidates and every other person that would be at the exam venues must be observed.

“All schools are also expected to provide thermometer hand-gun, wash- hand buckets with running water, soaps, sanitisers and so forth for use at the exam venues.” He added

Areghan however, lamented what he called the huge cost that it will now take WAEC to conduct the exam, saying it is triple of the original budget prior to COVID-19 just because of the increased logistics and the numbers of supervisors and venues as there is an upsurge in workers and personal protective equipment needed to have a hitch-free exam.

He asked for the support of both the federal and various state government as well as corporate bodies and individuals to come to the aid of WAEC by donating such items as sanitisers, face masks and other required as safety measures at any of their offices nationwide.

He said the time-table for the exam was fixed by all the five members countries and not by Nigeria alone and done after due consultation with the respective government.

He also said the exam would have lasted nine weeks as the previous editions but fused into five in order to make room for other examination bodies to conduct their own exams in good time.

Thirty-four percent of female undergraduates in Lagos have had a previous pregnancy, according to a study of 725 female undergraduates at the Lagos State University, Ojo.

The study, which focused on sexuality and emergency contraceptive practice among female undergraduates, was conducted by six researchers at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja.

It was published in the Open Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology on June 30.

“This study was designed to explore the sexuality, perception, attitude towards and utilisation of emergency contraceptives among female undergraduate students in Lagos State University,” study lead, Oshodi Yusuf Abisowo, said.

The researchers collected data through a structured self-administered questionnaire by obtaining information on demography, sexual and contraceptive history, perception, attitude towards and use of emergency contraceptives.

The researchers found that, “Of the 725 (90 percent) that completed the questionnaires, 334 (46 percent) of the respondents were sexually active, with 115 (34 percent) having previous history of pregnancy.

“Eighty-two percent of those pregnancies were unintended, while 88 percent of those with unintended pregnancy had them terminated by induced abortions.

“Fifty-four percent of the abortions was carried out by untrained persons; and only 29 percent of those who had unprotected sexual intercourse used emergency contraceptives.”

The researchers say ignorance and promotion of sexual promiscuity were identified as the main reasons for not using emergency contraceptives.

“Previous use of contraceptives, married status, increasing age and year of study were positive predictors for the use of emergency contraceptives; while poor knowledge was a significant predictor of non-use,” research findings state.

The researchers suggested solutions to issues of contraception among undergraduates.

“Information on contraceptives should be introduced in secondary schools and in general studies courses in tertiary institutions, while parents and caregivers should discuss issues relating to sex and contraceptives with adolescents,” they said.

The researchers concluded that the awareness of emergency contraceptive is low, while its use is even far lower, yet high rate of sexual activities and unwanted pregnancies had been reported.

“It is strongly recommended that information about contraceptives should be introduced in schools, as early as secondary schools and also in general studies courses in tertiary institutions.

“Parents and caregivers should be bold and confident enough to discuss issues relating to sex, contraceptives, sexually transmitted infections and family planning with the adolescents, instead of allowing them to source for information from the internet or from peer groups who may not be knowledgeable enough on such matters.

“Stakeholders should ensure provision of youth-friendly sexual and reproductive health services designed to respond to and meet the health needs of these apparently sexually active young people as reflected in Nigeria’s policy on population for development.

“It is expected that this will contribute to meeting a target of the Sustainable Development Goal 3 which aims at ensuring universal access to sexual and reproductive healthcare services, information, education, including family planning,” the researchers noted.

34% of LASU undergraduates have had previous pregnancy —Study

The Vice-Chancellor, Federal University, Oye Ekiti, Prof. Kayode Soremekun, said on Saturday that the institution was planning to change into a dual-mode to combine existing conventional academic programmes with Distance Learning Programme.

Soremekun said he had held several meetings with the Commonwealth of Learning in Vancouver, Canada, with a view to achieving the feat.

He said, “I have visited COL and held a series of meetings with the organisation. The matters discussed were focused on developing FUOYE with regards to quality assurance, employability and the strategy to transit FUOYE into a dual-mode university.

According to him, running a distance learning programme would expand the scope of scholarship around the globe through access to university education and exchange programme among commonwealth universities.

COL is an intergovernmental organisation established by the Commonwealth Heads of Government in 1988 for enhancing the quality of educational programmes of Commonwealth nations and to encourage the development and sharing of open learning and distance education knowledge and resources.
