UNILAG ASUU begins strike over unpaid salaries

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Lagos (UNILAG) branch has declared an indefinite industrial action beginning from Wednesday.

The strike was declared on Tuesday by the leadership of the union at the branch, Prof Idou Keinde, who is the chairman and Prof Adesina Arikawe, the secretary, shortly after their emergency congress held earlier in the day.

The lecturers declared the strike following an alleged non-payment of their full salaries by the school authorities for January and February.

According to the lecturers, the school authorities only paid “amputated salaries” to members across its two campuses- Akoka and Idi-Araba for the two months.

They claimed the incomplete payment of their salaries was contrary to what is obtainable in other federal universities and therefore cannot tolerate it.

Based on this, the union directed all members to stay off their duty posts until their full salaries for the two months are paid.

When contacted for reaction, the university’s spokesperson, Mrs Adejoke Alaga-Ibrahim, asked our correspondent to send a text message as she was in a meeting and could not answer the call at that time.

She also did not respond to the text message till the time of filling the report.
