Closure Of Schools : Nnamdi Azikiwe University Students Sneak Back To Hostels

With the easing of interstate boundary lockdown, ABS has observed a
massive return of tertiary students back to their campuses despite
that Federal Government has not released plans for the reopening of
Schools

ABS correspondent, Onyinye Agubaeze was at Ifite Village Awka where
most students of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka reside and noted an
increase in activities by students including those returning to their
halls of residence with their travelling bags.

A student of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Mr. Ebuka
Chukwuma and Miss Vanessa Okoye of Geology Department explained that
they grew weary staying at home for almost five months due to the
shutdown of schools occasioned by the Covid-19 pandemic.

They were however, of the view that Federal and State governments
should ensure that it funds schools to acquire adequate facilities for
the prevention of spread of the disease before considering reopening
of schools.

They also appealed to school management to intervene on the issue of
their house rent that is expiring, even though the academic year is
yet to come to an end.

On how they spent the period of the lockdown, some said while they
waited and saw that the reopening of Schools will take more time than
usual, they began to seek for skills to acquire to make their stay
less futile.

Kenyan schools asked to refund 2020 school fees due to COVID-19 pandemic

The government of Kenya has asked schools in the country to refund parents the school fees paid for 2020 academic session.

Schools have the choice of either to refund this year’s fees or put it towards next year’s academic session.

George Magoha, Kenya’s Minister of Education made this known while responding to concerns raised after his announcement on Tuesday, July 7, that primary and secondary schools would not reopen until 2021 as Coronavirus cases in the country continue to rise in number.

According to him, academic calendar for the year 2020 has been declared null and void due to the Covid-19, with all students to repeat a year as schools had closed in mid-March, three months after the school calendar had begun.

Some parents weren’t pleased with the government’s decision to have their children repeat a year in a school, but the country’s parents’ association said the online classes were a good way to keep the students busy.

Meanwhile, as of Wednesday, July 8, Kenya has recorded over 8,000 cases of Covid-19 with at least 164 deaths.
