The National Parents Teachers’ Association of Nigeria has said it is confused about the proclamation by the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, that schoolchildren nationwide would not be allowed to sit the West African Senior School Certificate Examination slated for August 4 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The NAPTAN National President, Alhaji Haruna Danjuma, in an interview with our correspondent on Thursday, said the association had resolved to meet Adamu by Monday to seek an amicable solution

NAPTAN had in the last week of May called on the government to reopen schools nationwide “to pupils who will be sitting external examinations of the West African Examinations Council and the National Examinations Council.”

The association said parents had resolved to work together with schools to put measures in place such as the provision of face masks, handwashing containers and hand sanitisers to minimise the risks of virus contraction by the pupils.

Reacting to Adamu’s directive that pupils would not be able to sit the WASSCE this year, Danjuma said parents were confused and that they would seek an audience with the government on the matter.

He said, “Surprisingly, we heard from the Federal Ministry of Education that the government has suspended the reopening of schools. This is very confusing; we don’t know what to do. We are waiting for whatever will come after this.

“On our side at NAPTAN, we are planning to go to the ministry and meet with the minister or his representatives to hear from them. It should be on Monday.”

The Minister of State for Education, Emeka Nwajiuba, had during the press briefing by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 last Monday announced that the 2020 WASSCE conducted by WAEC would hold between August 4 and September 5.

But Adamu said on Wednesday that all federal schools would remain closed until it was safe to reopen them. He also urged state governments that had announced school resumption plans to rescind such

All candidates who chose the Rivers State University, Nkpolu-Oroworukwo, Port Harcourt during the 2020 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and have received notification to that effect from JAMB are hereby requested to take note of the following:

i. The screening exercise for admission of candidates will be administered only on candidates who chose RSU as their first choice University.

ii Only candidates who scored 180 and above in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) are qualified to apply for the screening exercise in all the Faculties of the University.

iii. Candidates must possess the basic five (5) O’ level credit passes in accordance with the University’s Entry Requirements (Faculty /Departmental) as published in the Jamb Brochure. The Nigeria Police Force has commenced the recruitment exercise of new constables.

A statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, on Saturday, invites applications from suitably qualified Nigerians to join the police.

Mba while citing the requirements said applicants must be between the ages of 17 and 25; and must have obtained a minimum of five credits, including English and Mathematics, in WASSCE/NECO/GCE/NABTEB.

The recruitment exercise, which he said is free, will be done online through www.policerecruitment.gov.ng, beginning from July 14 to August 23

Applicants who meet the requirements would be invited for physical screening from August 24 to August 30.

“Names of the successful candidates will be published in the national dailies on 14th of September 2020 and on other platforms,” Mba disclosed.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has warned candidates who sat for the 2020 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) to be wary of fraudsters calling them for the upgrade of scores.

“The Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) wishes to advise parents, guardians and candidates in particular that there is nothing called ‘JAMB score upgrade’”, the statement read in part.

“This has never existed and will never be condoned by the board.”

“Parents/guardians and candidates alike are to note that the so-called score upgrade is simply a scam perpetrated by fraudsters to deceive unsuspecting and gullible candidates, their parents or their guardians as the case may be.”

“Therefore, any parent/guardian/ candidate that gets himself/herself involved in such a fraudulent act is doing so at his/her own peril and should be ready to face the full wrath of the law when caught.”

As a parent and investor in the education sector, I wish to register the fact that the Nigerian government’s policy of unilaterally cancelling the West African Senior School Certificate Examination, held annually by the West African Examinations Council, is not in Nigeria’s best interest.

At a time of the global COVID19 pandemic, it is understandable that an abundance of caution be put in place to save lives. However, caution, without consultation, and thoughtful action, may be counter productive.

1.5 million Nigerian youths write the West African Senior School Certificate Examination annually. To abruptly cancel this examination is to set back our nation’s youth, and place them behind their contemporaries in other West African nations. This is perilous, because Foreign Direct Investments and other economic indicators, are tied to the educational indexes of nations.

Already, Nigeria lags behind other African nations in crucial indices, like school enrolment, pass rates, and out of school children. This action, will further create chaos in the public education system and exacerbate an already bad situation.

Rather than cancellation, there are better ways to protect the health of Nigerians and prevent the pandemic from escalating. We could mobilise all available public and private infrastructures including primary schools, stadia, and cinemas, for the examinations. In the alternative, the Federal Government can prevail on WAEC to have a staggered examinations with a different set of questions for each shift. Doing so will allow WAEC Nigeria implement social distancing and achieve the goal of carrying out the examinations. A win-win scenario.

I urge this administration to take into account that the lives they are trying to save will be further put at risk, because if this policy is not reversed, tens of thousands, and possibly hundreds of thousands of Nigerians, will breach social distancing rules to cross over to neighbouring West African nations to write their WASSCE, rather than miss a year.

GENERAL ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:

Postgraduate Diploma Programme
1. Candidates seeking admission into the Postgraduate Diploma Programme should possess a minimum of Third Class in the Bachelor’s Degree or minimum of Lower Credit at the Higher National Diploma (HND).
2. First Degree holders irrespective of class of degree who are currently teaching or intend to take teaching as a profession.
3. HND graduates irrespective of class of grade who are currently teaching or intend to take teaching as profession.
4. Postgraduate Diploma in Education combined with Master in Education Programme (PGDE/M.Ed)
5. The programme is designed for candidates without background in Education who may wish to pursue M.Ed. programme. The two certificates will be issued concurrently at the end of the M.Ed. Programme.

Master’s Programmes:
1. Graduates of Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijagun or other Universities recognized by the University Senate who have obtained the approved Bachelor’s Degree with at least Second Class Honours (Lower Division) in the field of study.
2. Candidates with Third Class Bachelor’s Degrees and Postgraduate Diploma in the same subject.
3. Candidates with HND (Minimum of Lower CREDIT) and Postgraduate Diploma in the course applied for.
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D)
4. Every candidate must have a Master’s degree in his/her area of specialization with a minimum CGPA of 4.0 or 60%.
5. Holders of M.Phil. Degree in his/her area of specialization.
Those who have CGPA of 3.50 – 3.99 or 55% and above in Master’s degree programme can apply.
6. Candidates in (c) above will have to go through a conversion process into Ph.D. programme.

SPECIAL COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
1. Candidates wishing to study Educational Management at Master’s degree level must have credit in English Language, Mathematics and Economics at the WAEC/ NECO SSCE or GCE Ordinary Level. They must also have a certificate in Education.

5. Pass degree with 3 years cognate working experience is acceptable for Postgraduate Diploma in English.
6. Candidate wishing to study Business Education at Master’s level must have credit pass in English and Mathematics at WAEC/NECO SSCE, GCE O’L or NABTEB
7. For Science and other Mathematics related courses, a credit pass in Mathematics at the WAEC/NECO SSCE or GCE Ordinary Level is compulsory.

Pastor Akinade Alamu, Chairman, Oyo State Post Primary Schools Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM) has declared that considering measures already put in place by the State government led by Governor Seyi Makinde, noting will stop Oyo from partaking in the 2020 West Africa Senior School Examination (WASSCE).

This is coming on the sideline of recent announcement and counter declaration by the Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu that all the secondary schools under the jurisdiction of the Federal government would not partake in this year’s WASSCE school-based examination due to the ravaging Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Speaking on a local radio station, ‘Fresh FM’ programme tagged: ‘COVID-19 Situation Room’, the Oyo TESCOM Chairman condemned the poor funding and handling of the education sector by the Federal Government and wondered the government was opening and locking down schools indefinitely while the aviation and other business sectors are reopening.
He said, “This government at Federal level is not helping things in the education sector. The meagre budgetary allocation for education shows clearly that they are less concerned. They have re-opened airline operation. Do they want to tell us that people would not sit together inside an aeroplane or what?

“This pandemic has come to stay with us and we should do everything possible to manage it until we get curable drugs for the virus. We should not lock down an important sector like education. If we said we are not writing WASSCE this year, how are we sure that the pandemic would have gone by next year. Is the government saying we are not going to write it next year if Coronavirus persists; God forbid?

“The most important thing is to make adequate provision for the safety of our students, which we have done and we would continue to do so as events unfold.

“Before we resume in Oyo state, all the stakeholders in the education sector in the state that includes TESCOM, SUBEB, PTA and others held meetings with the COVID-19 management team in the state to fashion ways forward for school resumption,” he added.

According to Pastor Alamu, pieces of training have been organised for school heads “that also, in turn, returned to their various schools to train teachers on how best they can handle any occurrence of suspected Covid-19 issues”.

He maintained that with all measures put in place by Oyo would partake in this year’s WASSCE examination.
