The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has disclosed that the ongoing 2020 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME)/Direct Entry (DE) registration has been temporarily suspended in about 243 centres across the country. The board’s Head of Media and Information, Dr Fabian Benjamin, stated this yesterday in an interview with the newsmen in Lagos.

According to him, the suspension of the registration in the affected centres is to allow the board to conduct a third-party recruitment examination holding today, January 16, 2020.

Registration will resume in the affected centres by January 17th, 2020. The list of the affected centres is contained on the attached PDF file below;

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), on Tuesday, arrested some agents of one of the online payment services for Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), for allegedly charging above the approved cost by the Board. This was disclosed by JAMB’s Head of Media, Dr Fabian Benjamin, while monitoring the ongoing UTME/Direct Entry (DE) registration in Bwari, Abuja

According to him, the agents, who worked for Unified Payments Services (UPS), charged some candidates the sum of N4,500, as against the approved cost of N4,000, for the registration.

He described this as unfortunate and disappointing as the board prior to the commencement of the registration has a meeting with the accredited vendors and agreed that out of the N3,500 generated for each e-pin, they have a N210 commission.

He said the board, based on the Federal Government’s directive decided to sell the forms for nothing more than N4,000; N3,500 for e-pin and N500 for the English reading text.

We pointed this out to vendors that it was a presidential directive so that Nigerians are not exploited and we are ready to protect this.

“For any agent to sell above the approved price is unlawful and unacceptable; as we speak now, United Payments Service has been suspended from the sale of the 2020 UTME/Direct Entry (DE) forms,” Benjamin said.

Benjamin also said that the board had set out a team of investigators across all its centres nationwide to fish out those who perpetrate acts that were contrary to the rules and regulations of the board.

He also said that any bank or selling outlet that sells N1 above the approved price would be suspended and whatever deposit they had with JAMB would be confiscated.

Benjamin also advised candidates against registering from public examination tutorial teachers as they were not accredited vendors of the board.

Whoever registers with them, he said, would be disqualified from sitting for the examinations.

He, however, explained that the agents, who were caught in the act, had been asked to return the extra N500 they charged to the candidates and had since been handed over to the Police for further investigation.

The 2019/2020 Admission Screening/Clearance Exercise for Stream 1 and Stream 2 Candidates will commence on Monday 6th – Friday 17th, January, 2020 at the University Main Auditorium.

The Vice Chancellor, Lagos State University, Professor Olanrewaju Adigun Fagbohun, SAN, has received with great shock the news of the death of Miss Favour Dailey-Oladele, a final year student of the Department of Theatre Arts of the University. According to the Police, the deceased was murdered around the 8th of December 2019 at Ikoyi Ile in Ikire Osun State, by some individuals who have since been arrested.

The University Management hereby commiserates with the parents and other family members of the deceased, Staff and Students of the Department, and the entire University community. The Police have assured that justice will be served in this case as the perpetrators of this heinous crime will be charged to court immediately investigation is concluded.

The Vice Chancellor on behalf of the University Management hereby calls for caution on this issue on the part of students, and requests that they remain calm to allow law enforcement agents conclude their work. He assured that the University will continue to monitor the case.

The Vice Chancellor also reiterates the commitment of the University Management to the security of lives and property on all campuses of the University.

Tragedy struck on Christmas eve when the sad news of the death of final year Theatre Arts student of Lagos State University (LASU), Miss Favour Sewanu Oluwabuyikunmi Daley-Oladele was broken to her Parents at their Mowe, Ogun State home.
She was declared missing on Sunday December 8, when she got a call from her boyfriend, Owolabi Adeeko, also an Ex Student of LASU that same day, when he offered to drop her off in school at LASU.
According to her dad, Mr Daley Oladele, who spoke with UPSHOT REPORTS on the sad development, they could not reach her again since she left home on that fateful Sunday.
A search party began and her phone was tracked to Ikire by Police detectives, where they found her buried body with the heart and some other vital organs already dismembered.
The police at Mowe Police station where the case was reported confirmed the arrest of the culprit Owolabi Adeeko, Pastor Segun Philips of C& S Church, Ikoyi Ile, near Ikire in Osun State.
Owolabi, a suspected Yahoo Plus member, was said to have confessed that the ‘Prophet’ told him to eat the heart of Miss Favour for Money ritual and Power.
He told the Police that he drove her out of Lagos to Ikire where she was killed on the night of Sunday December 8 after they took some vital organs from her body and buried the remains near Ikire.
The Police has confirmed the arrest of the suspected Yahoo Plus member, Adeeko as well as his mother, Mrs Adeeko, C & S Prophet Segun Philips and some others.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board (JAMB) has announced the official date for the commencement of the 2020 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

Ishaq Oloyede, the JAMB registrar, disclosed that UTME for 2020 will be between March 14 and April 4

He said this at a stakeholders’ meeting on Monday in Abuja, The Cable reports.

According to him, “The UTME for 2020 will be between March 14 and April 4, noting that an optional mock examination for candidates would also take place on February 18, 2020.

“Registration for the UTME would start on January 13 and end on February 17.”

Lagos State University (LASU) is set to become a residential tertiary institution, 36 years after it was established.

The State Government, at the weekend, signed a Build, Operate and Transfer (BOT) agreement with six private property developers to deliver 8,272 units of hostel on the school campus in the next 18 months.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu officially approved the BOT agreement at a short ceremony held at Lagos House in Marina on Friday evening. The deal, which will lead to the construction of six blocks of Hall of Residence, was wrapped under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) policy of the State. The concessions will run for 35 years.

When the private developers deliver the projects in 2021, it is expected that 30 per cent of the school’s 26,000 student-population will be served, thereby reducing the pressure resulting from over subscription of privately owned off-campus residences.

After approving the contract, Gov. Sanwo-Olu said the development further underscored his administration’s objective of driving up quality output across the State-owned schools through provision of infrastructure critical to facilitating better-quality teaching and learning.

When LASU changes its status to a residential institution, Sanwo-Olu said there would be improvement in students’ academic performance, while the school would also move up in its global rating.

He said: “We have just approved an investment that will not only provide comfort to students, but also make positive impact on the future of our youths. If we agree that the youth as tomorrow’s leaders, we should not pay a lip service to things that will mentally prepare them for the future. It is only when we make investments like this in citadels of learning, such as Lagos State University and other higher institutions, that we can help the youth activate tomorrow they desire.

“The partnership we just sealed with the six private investors is strategic, because it is going to strengthen our capacity as a Government to scale up education quality and bring about improved academic performance of students. It will also help LASU in terms of global rating and outlook. We are using this model as a test case, which governments from other parts of the country will come and emulate. I believe we can deliver on this project and set a precedent that will change the course of tertiary education for good.”

Sanwo-Olu told the developers not to default the agreement deadline nor deviate from the terms of the agreement, stressing that the State Government would monitor the development of the Halls of Residence at every stage of their construction to ensure compliance with agreement.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Hon. Tokunbo Wahab, whose office facilitated the contract, said Sanwo-Olu had created a legacy that would outlive him with the approval of the BOT agreement, reiterating that there would be more private sector-led infrastructure development programmes to be initiated across the State-owned tertiary institutions.

Wahab pointed out the six concessionaires were selected through a transparent bidding procedure fully handled by a reputable management-consulting firm, PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC).

He said: “Today’s signing of the agreement speaks to the heart of the Sanwo-Olu administration’s T.H.E.M.E.S agenda, which takes provision of quality education as fundamental pillar. All we have just done is to provide infrastructure that will make the campuses of our tertiary institutions habitable place for our students. By this agreement, we have just made huge positive impacts on the 26,000 LASU students, who regularly face needless pressure in securing scarce off-campus accommodation.”

LASU Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Lanre Fagbohun, who was at the ceremony, described the development as “significant”, saying the agreement would radically change the landscape of the institution.

The contractors will move fully to sites in January and the projects will be completed by the middle of 2021.

The concessionaires are Costa Del Sol Limited, Seamless Integrated Limited, Aircom Nigeria Limited, Clay Hall Limited, First Investment Development Company Limited, and Advent Integrated Services Limited.

PROFILE OF DR. E. L. ADEBAYO: UNIVERSITY LIBRARIAN, LASU
Dr Emmanuel ‘Layi Adebayo (cln) who has been in librarianship profession for close to three decades started his career at the St. Andrew’s (now Emmanuel Alayande) College of Education, Oyo Town, Oyo State as Librarian 1 in 1991. He later proceeded to the Federal College of Education Technical, Omoku, Rivers State in 1996 on appointment as Principal Librarian and rose through the ranks before he was appointed as College Librarian at the FCE(T) Omoku in year 2000 and as University Librarian, Federal University of Technology, Akure in 2006. In 2009, he was again appointed University Librarian, Redeemer’s University, Ede where he spent two terms, ending in December 2018 after a successful ten (10) years at the helms of affairs in that library. He proceeded on sabbatical leave to the Ondo State University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa in January 2019.
Before assumption of duty at LASU on 2nd December, 2019, Dr Adebayo had worked in five tertiary institutions libraries and was the head in four of them. At various times, he served in scores of tertiary institutions Committees, which include, Member of University Senate, 2006 to 2019, Member, University A&PC Academic, Administrative and Technical and Junior Staff, 2006 to 2019 and Member University Management, 2006 to 2019. He was Chairman of a number of Committees as University Board of Survey 2011-2018, University Pool Vehicles and Drivers Committee 2011-2018, University A&PC Junior Staff Technical Committee 2006-2008, University Award Committee 2011, College Staff School 1999-2005 among others. He also served in similar Committees as above in Federal College of Education, Omoku, Rivers State between 1996 and 2005. This privilege made him to have served continuously in top level tertiary institutions Committees for twenty four (24) years at a stretch.
In the profession, he has served in several Committees and as consultant within and outside the university system. He has served and currently serving as External Examiner in Library and Information Science to several Universities outside Nigeria and as External Assessor and consultant to scores of tertiary institutions in the appointments of University Librarians and Deputy University Librarians in several Universities, Polytechnic Librarians in several Polytechnics and Monotechnics as well as College Librarians in several Colleges of Education. Dr. Adebayo also had the privilege of serving as Member, Planning and Implementation Committees (PIC) of four private universities, with two of such already granted operational licenses to operate by the NUC. He has participated in NUC Institutional Accreditation to two Universities in 2011 and NBTE Programmes Accreditation in 2018. He is also an Editorial Board Member of a number of Institutional and professional bodies journals of Library and Information Science, both in Nigeria and abroad.
Dr. Adebayo obtained the Bachelors degree with honours from the University of Ilorin in 1985, the master’s degree in Library Studies at the University of Ibadan in 1987 and a Doctorate Degree in Library and Information Science at the University of Uyo in 2004. He had the singular privilege of being the very first PhD graduate of the University of Uyo in Library and Information Science.
Dr Adebayo who has about seventy publications to his credit in high impact local and foreign based journals, book chapters and conference proceedings is widely traveled. He has attended trainings, academic workshops and conferences in several libraries and institutions in the USA, UK, Greece, Ethiopia, Netherlands, Ghana and Nigeria where he presented papers.
Dr. Adebayo who was among the first set of Librarians to be certified by the Librarian’s Registration Council of Nigeria in 2005 with Registration Number 230 is married and blessed with children.

Three people have been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) for aiding examination malpractice in the on going National Examination Council (NECO). The arrested persons include the Vice Principal of Government Day Secondary School in Ote community of Eiye-Nkorin local government area of Kwara State, a teacher identified as Usman Lanre Kayode and a National Examination Council (NECO) Supervisor Saka Isiaka

The suspects were arrested after the anti-graft agency received an intelligence report of the school’s management and supervisors of the centre extorting money from the students writing NECO in order to assist them in the examination.
