ASUU Suspends Strike in LASU, LASUED and LASUSTECH
Lecturers under the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in three Lagos State-owned universities have suspended their industrial action, paving the way for the resumption of academic activities with immediate effect.
The development is expected to bring relief to students, parents and other stakeholders who have been affected by the disruption of academic activities across the institutions.
The affected universities are Lagos State University (LASU), Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), and Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH).
ASUU Announces Suspension of Industrial Action
The unions announced the suspension of the strike on Friday, October 9, 2026, following negotiations with the Lagos State Government over staff welfare and the implementation of outstanding agreements affecting academic staff in the state-owned institutions.
In a joint statement, the union leaders expressed appreciation to members of the media, civil society organisations, traditional rulers, students, parents and other stakeholders for their support throughout the negotiation process.
The statement was jointly issued by Olusegun Babalola, Coordinator of the Steering Committee, ASUU-LASU; Grace Abimbola, Acting Chairman, ASUU-LASUED; and Murisiku Onigemo, Chairman, ASUU-LASUTECH.
According to the union leaders, the collective efforts of individuals and organisations contributed significantly to the negotiations, which focused on improved staff welfare and the implementation of important academic agreements.
Lagos State Universities Prepare for Academic Resumption
With the suspension of the strike, lecturers are expected to return to their classrooms with immediate effect, allowing academic activities to resume in the affected universities.
The development will come as welcome news to students whose lectures and other academic programmes were disrupted during the industrial action.
Students are advised to monitor official announcements from their respective institutions for information on lecture timetables, departmental activities, examinations and other arrangements relating to the resumption of academic activities.
Although the suspension marks a significant development, students should continue to follow official university communication channels for specific instructions concerning their academic schedules.
Staff Welfare Remains a Key Issue
The unions stated that their industrial action was driven by demands for improved staff welfare and the implementation of outstanding academic agreements.
While announcing the suspension, the union leadership reaffirmed its commitment to academic excellence and quality university education. It also expressed its intention to continue engaging with the Lagos State Government to ensure that outstanding issues relating to the staff welfare package are fully resolved.
The statement noted that the support received from civil society organisations, including the Joint Action Front (JAF), Education Rights Concern (ERC) and Campaign for Democratic Workers Rights (CDWR), helped strengthen the campaign for improved conditions and quality public tertiary education.
The unions also acknowledged the interventions of traditional rulers, whose counsel and diplomatic efforts reportedly helped bridge communication gaps during the negotiations.
Union Appreciates Students, Parents and Stakeholders
The ASUU leadership recognised the patience and sacrifices of students and parents during the period of the strike.
It expressed gratitude to media organisations for their coverage of the dispute and to other stakeholders who supported the negotiations.
The union further reiterated that its struggle was aimed at improving staff welfare and strengthening public university education in Lagos State.
What Students Should Know
Following the suspension of the strike, students of LASU, LASUED and LASUSTECH should:
- Monitor their university’s official channels for resumption announcements.
- Check departmental and faculty notices for updated lecture schedules.
- Await official information regarding examinations and other academic activities.
- Contact the appropriate university offices for clarification where necessary.
Students should avoid relying solely on unverified social media messages for information about specific resumption arrangements.
The suspension of the ASUU strike in LASU, LASUED and LASUSTECH represents an important step towards restoring normal academic activities in Lagos State-owned universities.
While lecturers are expected to return to the classrooms with immediate effect, continued engagement between the unions and the Lagos State Government will be important in resolving outstanding welfare issues and maintaining industrial harmony.
