The Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU) has received official approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC) to commence its Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme on a full-time basis.

According to the University, the approval takes effect from the 2026/2027 academic session and the programme will be offered at the University’s Main Campus, Ikot Akpaden.

The approval marks a major milestone in the University’s continuous expansion of its academic offerings and reinforces its commitment to providing quality education and professional training in the medical and health sciences.

NUC Approval Follows Successful Resource Verification

The approval was conveyed in an official letter dated 3rd September, 2026, following a comprehensive resource verification exercise conducted by a panel of experts appointed by the National Universities Commission.

During the verification exercise, the panel assessed the University’s available human resources, teaching facilities, laboratories, equipment, and other infrastructure required for the successful commencement of the MBBS programme.

Following a satisfactory assessment, the Commission approved the establishment of the programme.

A Major Milestone for AKSU

The introduction of the MBBS programme represents another significant achievement for Akwa Ibom State University as it continues to expand its academic programmes in response to the growing demand for quality medical education in Nigeria.

The University stated that it remains fully committed to providing the necessary academic staff, modern facilities, clinical training resources, and learning environment required to sustain the programme in accordance with the standards prescribed by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and other relevant professional regulatory bodies.

Appreciation to Government and Stakeholders

The University Management expressed appreciation to the Government of Akwa Ibom State and all stakeholders whose support, commitment, and contributions made the establishment of the MBBS programme possible.

Management noted that the approval reflects the collective efforts invested in strengthening the University’s academic capacity and expanding access to medical education.

Looking Ahead

With the commencement of the MBBS programme in the 2026/2027 academic session, Akwa Ibom State University is expected to admit its first set of medical students, further positioning the institution as one of Nigeria’s emerging centres for excellence in medical education and healthcare training.

The University reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining high academic standards and producing competent medical professionals capable of contributing meaningfully to Nigeria’s healthcare system.

The approval is another landmark achievement in AKSU’s drive towards academic excellence and institutional growth.
