NORTHWEST UNIVERSITY, KANO ANNOUNCES SUMMER COURSE PROGRAMME

The Management of Northwest University Kano, through the Committee on Summer Courses, has formally ratified the introduction of a specialized Summer Course Programme. This high-impact academic initiative is strategically designed as a “remedial bridge,” allowing students to address credit deficiencies, exit probationary status, and improve their Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA). By providing an accelerated instructional window, the university aims to enhance graduation rates and maintain the rigorous academic standards of the institution.

Eligibility and Target Student Demographics

The Summer Programme is not a general semester but a targeted intervention. To maintain the integrity of the degree-awarding process, the Committee has restricted eligibility to specific categories of students who require urgent academic realignment:

  1. Spillover I and II Students: Those who have exceeded the standard duration of their residency but still have outstanding courses to clear for graduation.

  2. Final Year Students: Individuals in their terminal year who need to remedy specific “carry-over” courses to ensure they graduate with their current cohort.

  3. Probationary Students: Students currently on academic probation—or those with a history of probation—seeking to raise their CGPA above the minimum retention threshold.

The “Single-Semester” Registration Protocol

The university has implemented a strict “Single-Semester Logic” for the summer session to ensure pedagogical depth and prevent student burnout.

  • The Rule: Students are strictly prohibited from mixing courses from the First and Second Semesters in a single summer session.

  • The Implementation: You must choose to remedy only First Semester courses or only Second Semester courses during this window. For the current session starting in March, the focus is on First Semester Courses of the 2024/2025 academic year.

Financial Framework and Payment Structure

The Summer Programme operates on a cost-recovery basis. All payments must be processed online through the university’s designated payment gateway. It is critical to note that all fees are non-refundable.

Fee Category Amount Description
Central Registration Fee ₦20,000 Mandatory base fee for participation in the session.
Course Processing Fee ₦5,000 Charged per individual course registered.

Example Calculation: If a student is registering for three (3) carry-over courses, the total financial obligation would be:

$$₦20,000 + (3 \times ₦5,000) = ₦35,000$$

Administrative Timeline and Submission Workflow

The registration window is highly compressed, requiring immediate action from eligible students.

  • Commencement Date: Monday, 23rd March 2026

  • Closing Date: Sunday, 29th March 2026 (11:59 PM)

The Three-Step Validation Process:

  1. Online Payment: Complete the transaction and ensure you receive a digital receipt.

  2. Digital Registration: Register the specific courses on the portal and download the Registration Form.

  3. Physical Screening: Submit the printed form and payment receipt to your Faculty Office for final verification and screening.

Conclusion: A Second Chance for Academic Excellence

The introduction of the Summer Course Programme by Abbas S. Abashe and the Committee on Summer Courses represents a significant opportunity for students to salvage their academic standing. By adhering to the one-week registration window and the single-semester rule, eligible students can effectively clear their academic hurdles and move toward successful graduation.
