FG APPROVES UPGRADE OF KADUNA POLYTECHNIC TO FEDERAL UNIVERSITY
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has assented to the bill upgrading the Federal Polytechnic, Kaduna, to the Federal University of Technology and Vocational Studies, Kaduna.
The development was confirmed by Daniel Amos, the member representing Jema’a/Sanga Federal Constituency and Chairman of the House Committee on House Services, in a statement announcing the presidential assent.
The legislation was sponsored by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas. It repeals the law establishing the Federal Polytechnic, Kaduna, and provides for its conversion into a federal university.
Why Was Kaduna Polytechnic Upgraded to a University?
According to Daniel Amos, the conversion is intended to expand educational opportunities and strengthen technical and vocational training in Nigeria.
He explained that the new university would help reposition technical education, promote skills acquisition and contribute to national development.
Amos also said the transformation would provide a platform for expanding degree programmes, strengthening research capacity and equipping graduates with practical skills required in the labour market.
The new institution is expected to focus on technology and vocational studies, with the aim of producing graduates capable of contributing to Nigeria’s technological and industrial development.
Tajudeen Abbas Commended for Sponsoring the Bill
Daniel Amos commended the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, for sponsoring the legislation.
He described Abbas’s role in advancing the bill as evidence of a commitment to education and national development.
Amos also expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for granting assent to the legislation, noting that the development aligns with the administration’s stated commitment to educational reform and human capital development under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
Tinubu Also Approves Upgrade of Yaba Institution
In the same announcement, Amos disclosed that President Tinubu had also assented to legislation establishing the Federal University of Technology and Vocational Studies, Yaba, Lagos.
The bill was also sponsored by Tajudeen Abbas.
The two developments are expected to support the expansion of technical and vocational education, create opportunities for further academic development and strengthen skills training.
What Does the Upgrade Mean for Current Students?
The conversion may raise questions among current students and prospective applicants regarding existing programmes, certificates, admission requirements and academic arrangements.
However, the announcement did not provide detailed guidelines on how the transition will affect current students or when new programmes under the university’s status will commence.
Students should therefore continue to follow official announcements from the institution and relevant education authorities for information about transition arrangements.
Prospective applicants should also wait for official confirmation of approved programmes, admission requirements and application procedures before making decisions based on the institution’s new status.
Conclusion
President Tinubu’s assent to the legislation upgrading Federal Polytechnic, Kaduna, to the Federal University of Technology and Vocational Studies, Kaduna, marks a significant change in the institution’s legal status and educational direction.
The conversion is intended to expand higher education opportunities, promote technical and vocational training, strengthen research and equip graduates with practical skills.
The institution’s management and prospective students are expected to look to subsequent official announcements for details on implementation and academic arrangements.
