STATE UNIVERSITY OF MEDICAL & APPLIED SCIENCES (SUMAS) SECURES NUC APPROVAL FOR DENTISTRY, OPTOMETRY & 4 OTHER ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES
The State University of Medical and Applied Sciences (SUMAS), Igbo-Eno, Enugu State, is once again in the news following the approval by the National Universities Commission (NUC) for the establishment of six new undergraduate academic programmes in the University.
The approval followed a resource verification visit undertaken by a panel of experts constituted by the NUC to assess the human and material resources available for the proposed programmes. The exercise was aimed at determining the University’s readiness and capacity to commence and sustain the programmes in line with the standards and requirements of the regulatory body.
Following the successful resource assessment, the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission considered and approved the establishment of the full-time mode of the six programmes at the State University of Medical and Applied Sciences, Igbo-Eno, with effect from the 2026/2027 academic session.
The newly approved programmes are:
1. O.D. Optometry
2. B.DS. Dentistry
3. B.Sc. Dental Therapy
4. B.Sc. Dental Technology
5. B.Sc. Pharmacology
6. B.Sc. Prosthetics and Orthotics
The development marks another significant milestone in the growth and expansion of SUMAS as a specialized university committed to producing highly skilled professionals in medicine, health sciences, natural and applied sciences, engineering and other related disciplines.
The approval further demonstrates the University’s commitment to providing quality academic programmes supported by qualified academic personnel, appropriate infrastructure, modern laboratories, specialized equipment and other essential learning resources required for effective teaching, research and professional training.

The NUC approval represents a shared achievement and reinforces the importance of sustained collaboration among the State Government, the University’s Governing Council, Management, staff and regulatory authorities in advancing the institution’s academic mission.
The approval is expected to expand the academic opportunities available to prospective students seeking professional training in specialized areas of health and medical sciences. With the introduction of these programmes, SUMAS further strengthens its position as a growing destination for students aspiring to pursue careers in healthcare, clinical practice, pharmaceutical sciences and other specialised health-related fields.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. James Chukwuma Ogbonna (FAS), commended the Management, academic and non-academic staff for their collective efforts towards the continuous development of the University.
