The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved the commencement of academic activities at the Distance Learning Institute of Kaduna State University (KASU), marking a significant milestone in the University’s commitment to expanding access to quality higher education through technology-driven learning.

The approval paves the way for KASU to officially operate its Open and Distance Learning (ODL) programmes, providing flexible learning opportunities for students across Nigeria and beyond.

The approval was conveyed in a letter dated 15th July, 2026, following the successful validation of the proposed Distance Learning Institute by a National Universities Commission panel that visited the University between 14th and 16th April, 2026.

MBA Programme Approved for Take-Off

According to the National Universities Commission, the Institute has been granted approval to commence operations with the Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme only.

The programme will be delivered through the ICT-Enabled Supported Blended Learning mode under Nigeria’s Open and Distance Learning (ODL) system, allowing students to combine online learning with approved physical academic engagements.

The approval represents KASU’s first step toward expanding its distance learning offerings in line with global best practices in higher education.

NUC Sets Operational Guidelines

While granting the approval, the National Universities Commission directed Kaduna State University to ensure full compliance with all regulations and guidelines governing Open and Distance Learning programmes in Nigerian universities.

The Commission also instructed the University to implement all recommendations contained in the Technical Report submitted by the validation panel before and during the operation of the Institute.

Post-Validation Assessment to Be Conducted

As part of its quality assurance process, the National Universities Commission disclosed that it will conduct a Post-Validation Assessment Exercise after the Institute has operated for one year.

The Commission further emphasized that the introduction of any additional distance learning programmes beyond the approved MBA will require separate resource verification, assessment, and formal approval by the NUC.

A Major Step Towards Expanding Access to Higher Education

The establishment of the Distance Learning Institute reflects Kaduna State University’s commitment to leveraging technology to improve access to quality postgraduate education while providing flexible learning opportunities for working professionals and other categories of learners.

The approval also aligns with ongoing efforts by the National Universities Commission to promote technology-enabled teaching and learning across Nigerian universities while maintaining high academic standards.

With the approval now secured, Kaduna State University is expected to commence admissions into the approved Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme under its Distance Learning Institute in accordance with the University’s admission guidelines.

The development represents another significant achievement for Kaduna State University (KASU) as it continues to expand its academic offerings and strengthen its position as one of Nigeria’s leading public universities.
