FG DECLARES PUBLIC HOLIDAY TO MARK NIGERIA’S 66TH INDEPENDENCE ANNIVERSARY
The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Thursday, October 1, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate the country’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
The declaration was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government.
The Minister congratulated Nigerians at home and abroad as the country celebrates 66 years of independence and called on citizens to use the occasion to promote unity, patriotism, peaceful coexistence and mutual respect.
OCTOBER 1 DECLARED PUBLIC HOLIDAY
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Interior, Thursday, October 1, 2026, has been designated as a public holiday in commemoration of Nigeria’s Independence Day.
The declaration provides an opportunity for Nigerians across the country and in the diaspora to commemorate the nation’s independence and reflect on its journey since gaining independence.
Nigeria became independent from British colonial rule on October 1, 1960.
FG CALLS FOR UNITY AND PATRIOTISM
In his Independence Day message, the Minister of Interior urged Nigerians to emulate the country’s founding fathers by demonstrating commitment to the nation’s development.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo emphasised the importance of peace and stability to national development and called on citizens to contribute to building a country that future generations can be proud of.
He also described Nigeria’s diversity as a strength and encouraged citizens to maintain hope and collective determination towards building a stronger and more prosperous nation.
FEDERAL GOVERNMENT REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT
The Minister further assured Nigerians that the Federal Government remains committed to strengthening national security and public safety, while creating an environment where citizens can live, work and pursue their legitimate aspirations.
He stated that the government’s efforts under the Renewed Hope Agenda would continue to focus on improving the well-being of Nigerians.
The Minister also called on citizens to use the Independence anniversary as an opportunity to reflect on their responsibilities towards the country’s continued development.
NIGERIANS URGED TO CELEBRATE PEACEFULLY
As Nigerians mark the 66th Independence Anniversary, citizens are encouraged to celebrate responsibly and maintain peace across their communities.
The Ministry of Interior urged Nigerians to uphold the values of patriotism, tolerance, unity and mutual respect during the celebration.
The public holiday will apply on Thursday, October 1, 2026, allowing Nigerians to participate in activities marking the country’s Independence Day.
