ASUU Rejects Meeting Via Zoom with FG, Explains Why
The president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, has disclosed that the union has been unable to hold a physical meeting with the Federal Government due to the pandemic. He also explained that the union refused to hold meeting via Zoom platform with the Federal Government’s representatives, saying such meetings would not yield any tangible result as it would be difficult to control.
According to ASUU President, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, invited the union to a meeting in Abuja, as a response to union’s last official correspondence to him where the union rejected the submission of their Bank Verification Numbers as a condition for payment of lecturers’ outstanding salaries.
However, the union delegates were unable to go for the meeting due to the current lockdown which led the minister to suggest that both parties meet via Zoom platform. he stated that the union refused because such meeting cannot yield any positive result when most of their physical meetings in the past ended in a stalemate. He said the union is waiting for things to return to normal for a physical meeting to be possible.
He acknowledged that the government has indeed paid salaries of some members of the union, but not all. “Many of our members are yet to get their salaries as of Monday, and some of those who had even been paid were not paid in full. We are collating data to enable us know those affected,” he said.
He said though that salaries are not their major demand from the government but the implementation of the last Memorandum of Action to re-engineer the nation’s public university education.
The ASUU president said no member of the union submitted BVN before payment of their salaries.
“We knew submission of our BVN would lead to our forceful participation in the Integrated and Personnel Payroll Information System (IPPIS) of the Federal Government and we still stand against the policy,” he declared.

300-level student of UNIJOS killed by suspected security men
Following the gruesome killing of a 300-level student of University of Jos (UNIJOS), Mr Rinji Bala, by suspected security men during a lockdown hour, the whole Holshe community in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State was thrown into confusion and mourning on Wednesday.
Campusinfo learnt that the 20-year-old UNIJOS student was arrested along with five others by security operatives along the National Library area for breaching the lockdown being observed in the state and were whisked to a security post where they were mercilessly tortured.
An eye witness, who was part of those arrested declared: “I and five others were whisked to Sector 1 headquarters of the Special Task Force near Jos Zaria Road stadium in a military patrol van. They did not tell us our offence but tortured us for over an hour before releasing us.
“At the gate, some soldiers asked us to run. When we took off, they opened fire and Rinji fell a few metres from the gate. I stopped to help him up but a soldier came close, with his gun pointed at me, but turned back when another soldier shouted ‘ceasefire.’”
The State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Ubah Gabriel, said: “I heard of the incident, but I don’t know the circumstances surrounding his death but not by the police.”
RIP

Court sentences Uniport student to death over murder of eight -year-old girl
A High Court in Port Harcourt has sentenced a second-year student of Physics department, University of Port Harcourt, Ifeanyi Dike and one Ugochukwu Nwamiro to death by hanging over the murder of an eight-year-old girl, Victory Chikamso Nmezuwuba.

The duo was sentenced to death without options of fine. One is to be hung on his neck until he dies while the other is to be hung on the leg till he dies as well.
Dike, who was 23 years old when the incident happened in 2017, was apprehended by a local vigilante group in the Eliozu axis of Port Harcourt with a sack containing Chikamso’s remains following a tip-off. The local security outfit later handed Dike over to the police for further investigations and prosecution.
He (Dike) reportedly removed the victim’s eyes, vagina, finger and tongue, after defiling and murdering her with the assistance of his cousin, Ugochukwu.
Few days after he was handed over to the police, Dike escaped from the premises of the State Criminal Investigation Department, (SCID), with the aid of the police personnel on duty, Sgt Johnbosco Okoronze who failed to handcuff the suspect after he had finished writing his statement.
Dike’s escape raised serious criticism and condemnation on the police even as the then Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Zaki Ahmed, described it as unfortunate and an embarrassment to the police force, adding that such mistake resulted due to an individual’s negligence.
Few weeks later, Dike was however rearrested in Jos,plateau state capital by security operatives and was brought back to Port Harcourt for trial.
During trials of the case, the police prosecutor, Sgt. Blessing Oheyen tendered the body parts of the victim as evidence to the court.
Barely, three years after the trial, the Judge, Justice Adolphus Enebele, ruled that the evidence before the court shows that the duo conspired and murdered Chimkamso and hence, sentenced them to death.
The judge also sentenced Sergeant Johnbosco Okoronze of the State CID to one-year imprisonment for aiding the escape of Dike from Police Custody in PortHarcourt.
Family of the victim, Chikamso expressed relief on the judgement while relatives of Dike were seen in court weeping after the judgement.

Babcock University Postpones Online 2nd Semester Examination For 2019/2020 Academic Session
Babcock University, Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State has postponed its online second-semester examination after many students were unable to take their papers on Monday and Tuesday. According to a statement by the institution’s Registrar, Prof. Jonathan Nwosu, the examination was postponed till May 18 because of technical hitches despite the availability of requisite facilities.
The statement reads: “Babcock University, unfortunately, wishes to inform you all that the conduct of the second semester examinations is hereby deferred.
“This is due to extraneous technical hitches beyond the control of the university. Be informed that the university has sophisticated computer hardware resources, specifically dedicated, to accommodate all that is needed for this exercise. We have functional 32-core processor blade server, 512 GB RAM, sufficient SSD storage and other necessary accessories capable of handling resources required to conduct the examinations. However, the good news is that our on-ground technical team and foreign consultants have almost finished sorting out the much regretted situation.”
It was gathered that some of the students experienced difficulties taking the examination after logging on to the portal at the scheduled times on Monday and Tuesday.
According to the registrar, a revised timetable for the rescheduled examination would be released on May 15 ahead of May 18.
He, however, said that those students who successfully had their examination on Tuesday would not have to repeat it.
“Please be informed that those who have successfully completed the 8am-10am examination of today, Tuesday, May 12, shall not be allowed to retake the examinations, as they shall be disabled, while those who could not successfully complete theirs are guaranteed of another opportunity,” he said.
