Lagos State University, partnered by some universities and collaborating institutions has won $2,496,128.00 partnership grant in the October 2019 Competition of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, Canada.
The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) is the federal research funding agency of the Canadian Federal Government that promotes and supports postsecondary-based research and research training in the humanities and social sciences. The winning proposal titled “Vulnerability to Viability (V2V): Global Partnership for Building Strong Small-Scale Fisheries Communities”, had as lead applicant Dr. Prateep Nayak of the University of Waterloo and Prof. Akintola, S.L and Dr. Fakoya, K.A of the Department of Fisheries, of Lagos State University as co-applicants.

According to the team, “the goal of the partnership is to critically examine factors and conditions contributing to the vulnerability of the small-scale fisheries (SSF), and to work with SSF communities and other key actors to enhance their viability.

“We use the term viability not just in an economic sense but also to include social, political, and ecological aspects of SSF. Transitioning from vulnerability to viability (V2V) is an area of study that has not been adequately explored

To do so, our partnership brings together a diverse team of experts (scientists, practitioners, policy and community actors) from 30 Universities, 7 government and research institutions, and 14 non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and civil society organizations (CSOs) to form a “V2V Global Partnership.”

The LASU team also expressed gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olanrewaju, A. Fagbohun, SAN, NPOM for the support it received during the proposal stage and for providing the conducive environment that makes LASU participation compelling.

The meeting which was held on Thursday, 22nd May, was for over two hours started around 11am culminating around 1pm and chaired by the University’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Olanrewaju Fagbohun

The National Examinations Council (NECO) has gotten a new Registrar and Chief Executive Officer, Professor Godswill Obioma

Professor Obioma’s appointment has been approved by President Muhammadu Buhari.

In a letter dated 15th May 2020 with Reference No: FME/PS/396/C1/1/134 and signed by the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, the letter stated that the appointment which is for an initial tenure of five years takes effect from 14th May 2020.

In a statement signed by the Head of Information and Public Relations Division, Azeez Sani, the Registrar officially took over the affairs of the Council from the former Acting Registrar, Mallam Abubakar Gana on Friday, 22nd May 2020 at the Council’s headquarters in Minna.

The new NECO Registrar is a Professor of Education Measurement and Evaluation and was a former Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Educational Research and Development Council.

Until his appointment as Registrar/CE of NECO, Prof. Obioma was the Ebonyi State Resident Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Ile-ife has received full accreditation from the National Universities Commission (NUC) h for all courses in the Faculties of Law, Dentistry, Basic Medical Sciences and Social Sciences

It was gathered that the NUC had in 2018 withdrawn the accreditation for law, dentistry and other programmes at the OAU.

In a statement by the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the university, Abiodun Olarewaju, he said that the NUC, with the statutory mandate to accredit academic programmes in all Nigerian universities, had fully accredited all the programmes.

According to him, programmes being run by other Faculties were also accredited by the NUC while all programmes at the Postgraduate level were also fully accredited. With the latest accreditation of 42 undergraduate programmes, all the 107 programmes in the university are now accredited.

Thirty seven (37) out of the fourty-two (42) courses run in the University were granted Full Accreditation while five (5) others were given Interim Accreditation.

The statement quoted the Vice-Chancellor of OAU, Prof. Eyitope Ogunbodede to have praised NUC for giving in its best to ensure that all academic programmes being run by the universities in the country were of international standards.

He also appreciated what he called the institutional spirit of the institution’s Governing Council, led by Dr Yemi Ogunbiyi, the Senate as well as all the departments, faculties and alumni associations.

The vice-chancellor said that their commitment had assisted, in much greater measure, in ensuring all the necessary facilities are in place, which eventually culminated in the accreditation of all the courses, particularly those with initial outright denial or partial accreditation.

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the termination of the appointment of Prof Charles Uwakwe as the Registrar and Chief Executive of the National Examinations Council. This was contained in a letter dated May 11 and signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education, Sonny Echono, on behalf of the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu.

Four members of the Management were also dismissed for various offenses bordering on financial mismanagement.

Uwakwe has been on suspension since 2018 and Mr Abubakar Gana has been the acting Registrar of the exam body since then.

Uwakwe was accused of violating the Public Procurement Act (2007) and pursuant to PSR 030402 and Part 1 schedule 4 (i) of the NECO Establishment Act. It was alleged that Uwakwe and some top officials of the council allegedly awarded contracts in the council to the tune of N25billion without following due process.

NECO, in a release on Wednesday by its Head of Information and Public Relations Division, Mr. Azeez Sani, confirmed that the suspended registrar had been relieved of his appointment by the President, while four members of the management had also been dismissed.

The former Registrar was also directed to hand over all the government property in his custody to the acting Registrar, Mr. Gana.

The Federal Government has disclosed that there are plans to reopen schools nationwide soon, saying, however, that this will not be done in two weeks as being speculated. This was made known by the minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, during the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 news conference in Abuja following rumours making the round the Federal Government would reopen schools in the next two weeks.

The Federal Government had ordered the indefinite closure of educational institutions nationwide as part of measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 pandemic.

Nwajiuba said the schools would be reopened when the safety of the school children could be guaranteed. He said the government is being careful as not to endanger the lives of the school children and further spread of the coronavirus in the society.

He added that his ministry is working with other relevant stakeholders and agencies of government to put necessary measure in place that would guarantee the safety of children before the schools are reopened.

He said: “We all are seriously interested in reopening and I believe we will reopen soon. But I can’t confirm what your children said that we will reopen in two weeks.

“The five countries of West African Examination Council (WAEC) are meeting and I just came out of a meeting with African Union (AU) Ministers of Education, everybody is concerned as you are. We hope to reopen very soon.

“This morning, I met with the Ministry of Science and Technology. We are looking at putting a system in place that can disinfect every child as he goes into a school and disinfect him as he goes out.

“If we resource our schools properly we can begin to reopen. But we must be able to ensure that the children go in safe and come out safe and not become a conduit for further infection in society.”
