The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has stated that the union had not refused an invitation from the government for negotiation during its ongoing strike and that the allegations of N800 billion by the Minister of Labour and Employment were baseless

The ASUU National President, Prof Biodun Ogunyemi, stated these in response to the statement by the Minister of Labour and employment, Ngige

According to the President of ASUU, the union has never declined an invitation to a negotiation meeting with the government. He said what the union asked government representatives to do was to send a response to the last letter the union sent to them. ” How can they claim to have invited us to a meeting without a clear agenda or any letter of invitation?” He queried.

On the N800 billion allegation, the ASUU president described the allegation as pure mischief stating that the union is thoroughly embarrassed that such reckless and baseless allegation could be credited to the Minister of Labour and Employment.

“In the first place, is ASUU responsible for the management of the payroll and personnel information in the universities? Secondly, how many of those responsible for the so-called “double payments” have the government apprehended, tried, and jailed to serve as deterrents?” He said.

The Management of Bowen University, Iwo has confirmed that the University’s examination for the Second Semester of 2019/2020 will be phased and the first phase is to start on Monday 1st of June 2020, virtually. In a statement from the Vice Chancellor, Professor Joshua Ogunwole, students are urged to take time to carefully read the guidelines for the Online Examination as published on the University website.

The statement further urged students not allow distractions and interference during the online examination. Students are reminded that the university has zero tolerance for examination malpractices and irregularities and are further asked not to block the cameras of their computers while the examination is ongoing. Parents are advised to limit their meddling during the examination. Students that are yet to balance their school fees may not be eligible for the examination but at a later date with an additional fee.

The Vice Chancellor wish all the students success in their examination, while urging parents and guardians to join in praying for their wards.

The University has since March, 2020 given directive to Academic staff to be active online for effective teaching through the upload of teaching materials and real time interaction with the students using the Bowen Smart School Hub (SSHUB), a platform designed for robust learning interaction. The Vice Chancellor assured students and their parents that the office of the Bursar will be willing to assist those who are ready to offset their bills.

Eligibility

Students are advised to pay their fees on or before 11:59pm on Sunday, 31st of May 2020.
Students who make payment after this time should contact their respective College Accountant for notification of payment.
Any student who fail to take this examination may be allowed to take the examination at the next available opportunity with a yet to be announced penalty.
General

1. All questions are timed.
2. The timing for each examination is indicated.
3. The system submits automatically at the expiration of the timed duration, thereby denying the student further alteration or re-visitation of options.
4. Only students who have registered and have made full payment of required fees will be permitted to take the examination.
5. Students must take the examination in a conducive room against any external intrusion.
Sponsored Data

The University has magnanimously sponsored the data usage of each student accessing the examination portal for the purpose of examination only. Consequently, only those who had provided their phone numbers for internet usage will benefit from this package. Please note, that the sponsored data is accessible through each student’s mobile number, hence, students can only make use of the sponsored data by means of sharing through hotspot. However, you are advised to have an alternative backup for internet.

Please read the following carefully before attempting this examination:

Prior to the examination

1. Please note that this examination is being monitored.
2. Each student must “Allow” device microphone and camera on the browser.
3. Each student must share the entire window screen not tabs.
Students should note that they can be heard.
4. There is a two-way communication between a student and an invigilator. Hence, the use of ear-piece is advised.
5. No student will be allowed to start any examination after 30 minutes of the commencement of the examination as stated in the Examination Timetable. For instance, if an examination is to commence by 10:00 a.m., a student will not be permitted to take the examination by 10:31 a.m. even after successful login.
6. Students are to study the examination instructions carefully.

During Examination

1. Movement of any kind is not allowed; students are to focus on their devices.
2. Do not attempt to refresh the browser.
3. Students are allowed to communicate verbally with the invigilator only when necessary.
4. Student are to note that the invigilator and the system will give comprehensive reports of activities throughout the duration of the examination.
5. Any student who finishes the examination before the allotted time can submit by clicking the ‘Submit Exam’ button.
6. If the allotted time should elapse, the system will automatically submit students responses.
7. Contravention of any of these regulations shall constitute examination misconduct and shall attract appropriate disciplinary actions.

After Examination
On the exam completed page, it is expected of each student to complete:

1. the feedback form; and
the complaint form, if appropriate.

How to Participate:

1. On the top navigation bar of the website, click on the Academics https://bucbt.bowen.edu.ng/ -> Examinations link (this takes you to the examination portal)
2. Log in to the examination portal using your Matric Number and your Password (same credentials used to log in to your SSHUB).
3. Please note that you can only log in to one device per time.
4. After you have logged in, you will be taken to a page where you will see your list of registered and approved university-wide courses. ­
5. Click on the Launch exam button of the course’s exam you have been scheduled to take. Please note that you are to keep to the examination schedule; as you will not be allowed to take the exam if you try to start the exam before the allotted time or after the set time of the examination.
6. You will be taken to a page where you have to verify if you can see yourself in the camera preview area, after you are sure that you can see yourself in the camera preview area, click on Take Exam. Please note that you will have to grant the portal permission to access your camera and your microphone.
7. On the examination page you will also be required to grant the examination portal permission to record and stream your entire screen. Please note that this step is very important to ascertain the validity of your exam.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has made it compulsory that O’level results and Advanced level results (For Direct Entry) of all the candidates recommended for admission by any institutions must undergo verification by JAMB before such candidates can be offered admission.

This means that when a candidate is recommended for admission by any institution, JAMB will verify if the person actually has the O’level requirement for that course of study. Candidates will no longer be recommended for admission just by what they scored in JAMB exam

This equally means that whatever O’level result or Advanced level result (for Direct Entry candidates) you submitted during JAMB registration, Post-UTME registration, or screening will be verified by JAMB before admission will be offered to you.

This is to ensure that only candidates with the right O’level results and O’level subject combination for their intended course of study will be admitted to study that course. So if you do not have credit passes in the required O’level subjects for your intended course of study, there will be no admission for you into that course.

The implication of this is that even if your school of choice admits you when JAMB has not approved your admission, that admission will not be officially recognized. It is an illegal admission and you will definitely have issues in the future with such admission.

For instance, you will be unable to go for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) because only candidates whose admissions were approved by JAMB will be able to register for NYSC.

And don’t forget that with the newly introduces Central Admission Processing System, it will be very easy to identify candidates whose admissions are illegal or whose admissions were not officially approved by JAMB.
Candidates are therefore advised to ensure that their O’level results are uploaded on the JAMB portal. This will enable their schools of choice to recommend them for admission and give them a better chance of being offered admission if they meet the needed requirements.

The National Parent-Teacher Association of Nigeria has asked the Federal Government to reopen schools nationwide, first to pupils who will be sitting external examinations by bodies such as the West African Examinations Council and the National Examinations Council.

The NAPTAN National President, Alhaji Haruna Danjuma, said in an interview with one of our correspondents said the government could provide safety medical equipment in schools.

Danjuma noted that the association had resolved to put measures in place such as the provision of face masks, hand-washing containers in schools, and hand sanitisers to minimise the infection risk among school children.

He said, “We, parents’ association, are bothered about this stay-at-home order as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. It has disrupted the calendar and academically affected all our children – particularly those graduating at the Junior Secondary School 3 and Senior Secondary School 3 levels.

“You know, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has already conducted this year’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination and some of our children sat for it with awaiting O’Level results. They hoped by June and July, the West African Examinations Council and the National Examinations Council would have conducted their exams too.”

Mr. Olumide Olusola Metillelu
Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has appointed Mr. Olumide Olusola Metillelu as the Acting Rector of Lagos State Polytechnic for a period of three months, effective from 1st June, 2020.

According to a release from the Office of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, the appointment is sequel to the expiration of the five-year tenure of the current Rector of the Institution, Mr. Samuel Oluyinka Sogunro on 31st May, 2020.

“The process for the appointment of a substantive Rector for the institution is ongoing by the Office of the Special Adviser on Education, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, with the screening and clearance of 17 out of the 25 applicants for the post of the Rector”, the statement read.

It further disclosed that Mr. Metillelu, prior to the present appointment, was the Deputy Rector (Academics) of the institution.

Whenever the Federal Government reopens schools for physical classes, some challenges are bound to confront private schools

Here are some of them:
1. Salary and tuition fees: Undoubtedly, public and private economies have been hit by weeks of lockdown and limited productivity. But soon as the schools reopen, teachers and other members of staff would be anticipating their wages as succor for the hard times.

On the other hand, private schools too haven’t been making much money, if they have at all through passive virtual classes.

Parents and Guardians are also making less money too, meaning school fees may be hard to balance. The proprietors of such institutions may have to source elsewhere for where to pay to their workers.

2. Retrenchment and restructuring:

If government schools are reluctant to downsize staff, private counterparts would not hesitate to. Some non-essential staff may be asked to take compulsory leave at first instance until their services can be afforded. Their return may even come after all.

Also, in a bid to sustain maximum teaching-learning, school management may ask that some teachers take more than their usual subjects to augment salaries for some relieved teachers.

3. Concerns over COVID-19:

The onus to protect children in these precarious times will depend on caregivers, teachers and the entire members of staff in private schools.

Federal Government will also be reopening schools under strict compliance to certain COVID-19 guidelines like social distancing, sanitation, transport system and use of face masks.

These are only necessary to ensure that schoolchildren are not only put in harm’s way but also make beating COVID-19 when they carelessly get infected and spread to their parents at home.

Schools, especially private that can afford such services, would have to employ more hands for sanitation of these free-spirited children.

4. Academic performance and examinations: Lockdown didn’t only take a toll on finance, it definitely would have affected the cognitive activeness of some children who didn’t have the advantage of exercising their brains.

Common entrance exams, juniors and senior West African examinations would be nearing upon resumption of schools. The Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination is underway too. Parents would be counting on their schools to live up to expectations of rejigging their ward’s memories and ensure redundancy doesn’t set in in spite of the compulsory and over-stretched holidays they had just experienced.

The federal government has said schools and hotels will be used as isolation centres, in the event of overflow of COVID-19 patients

The Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire, stated this during the Presidential Task Force media briefing on COVID-19 on Thursday.

As at Thursday evening, Nigeria has a total of 8,733 confirmed coronavirus cases, with the number increasing by hundreds every day

Lagos State for instance, has the highest number in the country, with 4,012 patients.

Ehanire expressed optimism that the situation in Nigeria would not “experience horrific scenes of bed space shortages seen in some European hospitals.”

According to him, there are over 112 treatment and isolation centres in 35 states and Abuja. However, not all states have up to at least 300 beds prescribed for isolation and treatment.

“In event of overflow, we can require hotels and school dormitories to be prepared for level 1 (Quarantine) and level 2 Isolation (of COVID-19 positive with zero or mild symptoms), to free hospital beds to be dedicated to level 3, (moderate to severe cases) and level 4, (high dependency and Intensive care unit).

“I therefore, call on activists and philanthropists to work with state governments in concerted steps to scale up non-pharmaceutical measures and beef up infrastructural assets for isolation and treatment in their states,” Ehanire said.

Admission Requirements.

1. To be eligible for admission to the Postgraduate Diploma Programme, candidates must be first degree holders in a relevant discipline from any recognized University. In general, all applicants must satisfy basic UTME requirements for Bachelor’s degree. Holders of HND with Upper Credit and above could also apply. Holders of First Degree in Animal Science are eligible to apply for Postgraduate Diploma Programme in Animal Science.
2. Candidates for Master’s Degree Programme must be graduates of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta or any other University recognized by the Senate and shall normally have obtained a minimum of Second Class (Upper Division) degree in relevant field. However, candidates with Second Class Lower Degree in relevant field may be considered. Candidates for Masters of Information and Communication Technology (MICT) programme should possess HND plus a Postgraduate Diploma in Computer Science or B.Sc. Physical Sciences/Engineering and Allied Disciplines. Prior computing or IT exposure is beneficial but not essential. 3. Candidates for admission to Masters and Ph.D. programmes in Communication Studies shall possess University degrees in Arts, Science, Applied Science, Social Science and Education or other related disciplines.
To be eligible for admission to the MBA (AgriBusiness) and Professional Master in Communication Studies degree programmes, candidates must be holders of Bachelor’s degree from a recognized University or HND (Upper Credit minimum) with a Postgraduate Diploma in any discipline.
4. Candidates with Postgraduate Diploma in Communication studies with a minimum cumulative average of 55% may be considered for Master’s Degree in Communication Studies. In addition, possession of relevant professional qualification and/or experience will be an advantage. A credit pass in O’ Level Mathematics is not compulsory for admission into Professional Master in Communication Studies programme which is strictly part-time (Friday and Saturday) programme. The duration of the programme is a minimum of 4 semesters.
5. Masters of Environment Management (MEM) is a three-semester professional programme designed for captains of industries who are degree holders or HND holders with distinction/credit pass plus PGD in relevant fields who have also satisfied all basic UTME requirements while Masters of Environment Management and Protection (MEMP) is an academic Master’s Degree that runs for a minimum of four (4) semesters.
6. The requirement for M. Agric applicants in the Department of Agricultural Economics and Farm Management is B. Agric (Agric Economics) with Second Class Upper. Other disciplines will be admitted to M.Sc. (Professional) with the prospect of conversion to MAgric on attaining a minimum weighted average score of 60% after the first year.
7. Masters of Veterinary Science (M .V.Sc.) and Master of Science (M.Sc.) courses are open to: (i) M.V.Sc. – Master of Veterinary Science is open to Graduates of Veterinary Medicine of FUNAAB and other University recognized by Senate. Any other qualification adjudged to be equivalent to a DVM by the Senate. Candidates must satisfy any other requirements as specified by the postgraduate school of FUNAAB. (ii) M.Sc.: – The Master of Science degree is open to Graduates of Biological Sciences of FUNAAB and other institutions recognized by Senate. Fellows of the Nigerian Institute of Medical Laboratory Technology or its equivalent may also be considered. Candidates must satisfy any other requirements as specified by the Postgraduate School of FUNAAB.
8. For Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree programme, a student must have obtained Master’s degree from the College of Veterinary Medicine of FUNAAB or other University recognized by Senate and other qualification adjudged to be equivalent to a Master’s degree by the Senate.
9. The duration of study for the Master’s degree programme shall be a minimum of 4 semesters and maximum of 8 semesters for full time candidates; while part time studies shall be for a minimum of 6 semesters and maximum of 10 semesters. Part-time students must finish all course works within the first four semesters of their registration.
10. To be eligible for admission to the Doctor of Philosophy degree programme, candidates must have obtained a Master’s degree from FUNAAB or its equivalent from any other University recognized by Senate. Holders of one year Master’s Degree are expected to undergo a conversion examination after the first session before proceeding to a Ph.D. programme.
11. Candidates for academic Masters and Ph.D. programmes shall be required to submit a research proposal along with their application forms, and may be required to interact (in oral or written form) with their respective Departments before admission.
