ACADEMIC STAFF UNION OF UNIVERSITIES (ASUU) TARABA STATE UNIVERSITY CHAPTER DECLARES INDEFINITE STRIKE OVER NON-IMPLEMENTATION OF AGREEMENTS
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Taraba State University (TASU) Chapter, Jalingo, has officially declared a total, comprehensive, and indefinite strike action with immediate effect from Monday, 12th October, 2026.
The decision was made public in an official press release issued on behalf of the ASUU-TSU Congress by the Chairperson, Dr. Garba Mbave Joshua. The union’s resolution follows persistent delays and the non-implementation of the agreements reached regarding staff remuneration and outstanding financial entitlements.
Core Demands of the Union
The industrial action is anchored on two critical demands presented to the Taraba State Government and university authorities:
* Implementation of Remuneration Agreement: The immediate implementation of the 2025 Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN)-ASUU remuneration agreement at Taraba State University.
* Settlement of Salary Arrears: The immediate payment of all accrued salary arrears accumulating from January 2026 up to the date of full implementation of the agreed remuneration structure.
Background to the Industrial Action
The union highlighted its history of patience, responsibility, and commitment to dialogue since negotiations began. Engagement with the Taraba State Government regarding these matters commenced as far back as February 2026, leading to the constitution of a verification committee tasked with evaluating existing salary structures and implementation levels across the North East region.
Although the committee concluded its assignment and submitted its report on 24th September, 2026, the union initially suspended its planned strike following government appeals for additional time through the Office of the Head of Civil Service.
However, the continued delay in implementing the findings and fulfilling financial obligations despite the conclusion of all administrative processes has ultimately forced academic staff to embark on industrial action.
Union’s Position and Call to Action
ASUU-TASU emphasized that declaring an indefinite strike is not a rejection of dialogue, as the leadership remains open to sincere, timely, and constructive engagements aimed at achieving a definite resolution.
The union called on the Taraba State Government to honor concluded processes by immediately implementing the agreed remuneration framework and liquidating all outstanding arrears.
Furthermore, it appealed to students, parents, and the general public to understand that the struggle is rooted in ensuring fairness, protecting worker dignity, and upholding the sanctity of agreements reached in good faith.
