The State University of Medical and Applied Sciences (SUMAS), Igbo-Eno, Enugu State, is once again in the news following the approval by the National Universities Commission (NUC) for the establishment of six new undergraduate academic programmes in the University.

The approval followed a resource verification visit undertaken by a panel of experts constituted by the NUC to assess the human and material resources available for the proposed programmes. The exercise was aimed at determining the University’s readiness and capacity to commence and sustain the programmes in line with the standards and requirements of the regulatory body.

Following the successful resource assessment, the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission considered and approved the establishment of the full-time mode of the six programmes at the State University of Medical and Applied Sciences, Igbo-Eno, with effect from the 2026/2027 academic session.

The newly approved programmes are:

1. O.D. Optometry

2. B.DS. Dentistry

3. B.Sc. Dental Therapy

4. B.Sc. Dental Technology

5. B.Sc. Pharmacology

6. B.Sc. Prosthetics and Orthotics

The development marks another significant milestone in the growth and expansion of SUMAS as a specialized university committed to producing highly skilled professionals in medicine, health sciences, natural and applied sciences, engineering and other related disciplines.

The approval further demonstrates the University’s commitment to providing quality academic programmes supported by qualified academic personnel, appropriate infrastructure, modern laboratories, specialized equipment and other essential learning resources required for effective teaching, research and professional training.

The University Management expresses profound appreciation to the Governor of Enugu State, His Excellency, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, for his support for the development of education and the continued growth of the State University of Medical and Applied Sciences, Igbo-Eno. His administration’s commitment to strengthening educational institutions and expanding opportunities for specialized training provides an important foundation for the University’s growth and its aspiration to become a leading centre for medical, scientific and technological education.

The Management also extends its sincere appreciation to the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of SUMAS, Msgr. Prof. Obiora Ike, for his leadership, guidance and continued support for the University’s vision and institutional development. His contributions, alongside those of the Governing Council, have continued to support the University’s drive towards academic excellence, institutional growth and the delivery of quality education.

The University equally acknowledges the efforts of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. James Chukwuma Ogbonna (FAS), the Governing Council, members of Management, academic and non-academic staff, and other stakeholders whose collective commitment and contributions have supported the University’s steady progress and successful resource verification exercise.

The NUC approval represents a shared achievement and reinforces the importance of sustained collaboration among the State Government, the University’s Governing Council, Management, staff and regulatory authorities in advancing the institution’s academic mission.

The approval is expected to expand the academic opportunities available to prospective students seeking professional training in specialized areas of health and medical sciences. With the introduction of these programmes, SUMAS further strengthens its position as a growing destination for students aspiring to pursue careers in healthcare, clinical practice, pharmaceutical sciences and other specialised health-related fields.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. James Chukwuma Ogbonna (FAS), commended the Management, academic and non-academic staff for their collective efforts towards the continuous development of the University. He reiterated the institution’s commitment to building a world-class university that meets national and international standards in education, healthcare training, research and innovation.

With the commencement of the approved programmes in the 2026/2027 academic session, prospective students and members of the general public are encouraged to obtain admission information through official University channels as the application process and admission requirements for the new programmes are announced.
