JAMB to Establish UTME Examination Centre in Canada from 2027
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced plans to establish a Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) centre in Ottawa, Canada, beginning in 2027.
The proposed centre is expected to make it easier for Nigerians living in Canada and other parts of North America to sit for the UTME without travelling to Nigeria solely to take the examination.
According to the Board, the initiative is part of its efforts to expand access to Nigerian tertiary education for Nigerians living abroad and strengthen their connection with the country’s education system.
JAMB PLANS UTME CENTRE IN OTTAWA, CANADA
JAMB disclosed the development in a post on its official social media platforms following a visit by its Registrar, Prof. Segun Aina, to the Nigerian High Commission in Ottawa, Canada.
The Board explained that the proposed examination centre would provide eligible Nigerians in Canada and other parts of North America with easier access to the UTME, particularly those seeking admission into universities and other tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
The initiative is expected to reduce the inconvenience and expenses associated with international travel for candidates who would otherwise need to return to Nigeria to participate in the examination.
UTME TO BECOME MORE ACCESSIBLE TO NIGERIANS IN THE DIASPORA
The proposed Ottawa centre represents a step towards making Nigeria’s tertiary admission process more accessible to eligible candidates living outside the country.
Many Nigerians residing abroad who wish to pursue higher education in Nigeria may face logistical challenges when travelling home to write the UTME. Establishing an examination centre in Canada could help address some of these difficulties.
JAMB said the initiative would strengthen the relationship between Nigerians in the diaspora and the Nigerian education system while creating more opportunities for international engagement with Nigerian tertiary institutions.
The Board also described the project as part of its broader vision of taking Nigerian tertiary education to the global stage.
CENTRE EXPECTED TO COMMENCE OPERATIONS IN 2027
According to JAMB, the proposed UTME examination centre in Ottawa is expected to commence operations in 2027.
However, further details regarding registration arrangements, examination procedures, eligibility requirements and the specific commencement date are yet to be provided in the information released by the Board.
Prospective candidates living in Canada and other parts of North America are therefore advised to monitor official JAMB announcements for updates concerning the proposed centre.
Candidates should also note that the planned centre does not replace the existing UTME registration and admission requirements. Eligible applicants will still be expected to comply with the Board’s official guidelines.
JAMB SEEKS TO STRENGTHEN NIGERIAN EDUCATION INTERNATIONALLY
The proposed examination centre is expected to support JAMB’s efforts to expand access to Nigerian tertiary education and provide more opportunities for Nigerians abroad who intend to study in their home country.
By bringing the UTME closer to eligible candidates in Canada, the Board aims to reduce barriers to participation and strengthen the connection between the Nigerian diaspora and local higher education institutions.
The development may also make it more convenient for prospective candidates abroad to pursue admission into Nigerian universities, polytechnics and other participating tertiary institutions.
WHAT PROSPECTIVE CANDIDATES SHOULD KNOW
Nigerians living in Canada and other parts of North America who intend to sit for the 2027 UTME should watch out for further announcements from JAMB regarding the Ottawa centre.
Important details to look out for include the registration process, approved examination arrangements, eligibility criteria and the official date the centre will begin operations.
Until these details are announced, candidates should rely on information published through JAMB’s official communication channels.
The proposed establishment of a UTME centre in Ottawa is expected to improve access to Nigeria’s tertiary admission process for eligible Nigerians abroad and further expand the international reach of the country’s higher education system.
