FG RELEASES PROPOSED 2027 EXAMINATION TIMETABLE, SCHEDULES NECO BEFORE WAEC
The Federal Government has proposed a harmonised national examination timetable for 2027, following a meeting between the Honourable Minister of State for Education (HMSE), examination bodies and representatives of private schools.
The resolutions were reached at a meeting held on September 30, 2026, focusing on the harmonisation of examination schedules and teacher qualification requirements for schools seeking approval as examination centres.
According to the communiqué issued after the meeting, the proposed timetable covers major examinations including the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), National Examinations Council (NECO) Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE), West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), NABTEB and NBAIS.
PROPOSED 2027 NATIONAL EXAMINATION TIMETABLE
The proposed examination dates are as follows:
| Examination | Proposed Examination Date | Proposed Results Release |
|---|---|---|
| JAMB – UTME | March 15–25, 2027 | March 2027 |
| NECO – SSCE | April 1–May 14, 2027 | August 2027 |
| WAEC – WASSCE | May 11–June 18, 2027 | August 2027 |
| NABTEB | June–July 2027 | To be communicated |
| NBAIS | June–July 2027 | To be communicated |
The communiqué stated that the proposed dates are subject to confirmation by the respective examination bodies.
The registration dates for the examinations are also yet to be communicated.
JAMB UTME PROPOSED FOR MARCH 2027
Under the proposed timetable, the 2027 JAMB UTME is scheduled to take place from March 15 to March 25, 2027.
The proposed results release period is March 2027.
However, candidates should note that these dates are currently presented as proposed dates and are subject to confirmation by JAMB.
Further information concerning the 2027 UTME registration process, including the opening and closing dates for registration, is expected to be communicated separately.
NECO SSCE PROPOSED FOR APRIL TO MAY
The proposed timetable places the 2027 NECO Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) between April 1 and May 14, 2027.
The proposed results release period for the examination is August 2027.
Candidates and schools are advised to await the official timetable from NECO before making final preparations based solely on the proposed dates contained in the communiqué.
WAEC WASSCE PROPOSED FOR MAY TO JUNE
The 2027 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) is proposed to hold from May 11 to June 18, 2027.
The proposed period for the release of the results is August 2027.
As with the other examinations, the dates remain subject to confirmation by WAEC.
The harmonisation of the examination timetable is expected to provide schools, candidates and examination bodies with a coordinated schedule for major examinations taking place in 2027.
NABTEB AND NBAIS EXAMINATIONS
The proposed timetable also includes examinations conducted by NABTEB and NBAIS.
Both examinations are proposed to take place between June and July 2027.
However, the proposed results release dates for both NABTEB and NBAIS are listed as “to be communicated.”
The specific examination dates are also expected to be communicated following further confirmation by the respective examination bodies.
75% TRCN-QUALIFIED TEACHERS REQUIRED FOR EXAMINATION CENTRES
In addition to the proposed examination timetable, the meeting reached a resolution concerning the qualification of teachers in schools accredited to serve as examination centres.
According to the communiqué, schools seeking to serve as examination centres are required to ensure that at least 75% of their teachers are TRCN-licensed by December 11, 2026.
The requirement is expected to apply to schools seeking approval to conduct the relevant examinations at their premises.
COMPLIANCE TO BE VERIFIED
The communiqué stated that compliance with the teacher qualification requirement will be verified.
Details of schools that meet the required threshold will subsequently be uploaded to the designated registration portal.
Schools that fail to meet the requirement will not be approved to serve as examination centres for any of the examinations covered by the directive.
This means private schools and other institutions intending to operate as examination centres will need to ensure that they meet the stated teacher qualification requirement within the specified timeframe.
SCHOOLS ADVISED TO PREPARE AHEAD OF DEADLINE
With the December 11, 2026 deadline approaching, schools intending to serve as examination centres are expected to review their teacher qualification records and ensure compliance with the new requirement.
The requirement places emphasis on having a substantial proportion of teachers properly licensed by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) before a school can receive approval to operate as an examination centre.
Schools that do not meet the 75% threshold may therefore be unable to host the examinations.
EXAMINATION DATES ARE STILL SUBJECT TO CONFIRMATION
Candidates, parents, schools and other stakeholders should note that the examination dates contained in the communiqué are proposed dates, not final examination timetables.
The document specifically states that the proposed dates are subject to confirmation by the respective examination bodies.
Therefore, candidates preparing for the 2027 UTME, NECO SSCE, WASSCE, NABTEB and NBAIS examinations should continue to monitor official announcements from the relevant examination bodies for the final timetables and registration schedules.
Further details and updates regarding the implementation of the resolutions will be communicated in due course.
The communiqué was signed by Dr. Bukola Dosunmu, Coordinator, FME-Government Private Sector.
