EBONYI STATE UNIVERSITY (EBSU) ANNOUNCES 28TH MATRICULATION CEREMONY

The Management and Senate of Ebonyi State University (EBSU), Abakaliki, are pleased to announce the formal schedule for the 28th Matriculation Ceremony of the institution. This landmark event, which serves as the official induction for the 2025/2026 academic session, represents a pivotal moment in the lives of newly admitted students. As one of the leading state-owned universities in Nigeria, EBSU continues its tradition of academic excellence by welcoming a fresh cohort of scholars into its diverse faculties, ranging from the Health Sciences and Law to Agriculture and the Social Sciences.

Ceremony Schedule and Logistical Details

The Vice-Chancellor, on behalf of the University Governing Council, has approved the following details for the ceremony to ensure a dignified and orderly proceeding:

  • Date: Saturday, 28th February 2026

  • Time: 11:00 AM Prompt

  • Venue: EBSU Main Campus, Abakaliki

The ceremony is expected to be a grand assembly of the university’s principal officers, academic staff, and students. All matriculants are required to be at the venue and seated by 10:30 AM to facilitate the formal academic procession led by the Vice-Chancellor.

The Legal and Academic Significance of Matriculation

Matriculation is far more than a ceremonial gathering for photographs and celebrations; it is a statutory requirement and a legal contract between the student and the university. By participating in this 28th ceremony, fresh students formally transit from “applicants” to “junior members” of the university community.

The highlight of the event is the taking of the Matriculation Oath. This oath is a solemn pledge where students commit to:

  1. Upholding the rules and regulations of Ebonyi State University.

  2. Respecting the constituted authorities of the institution.

  3. Shunning social vices such as cultism, examination malpractice, and drug abuse.

  4. Dedication to the pursuit of academic excellence and character development.

Failure to participate in the matriculation ceremony and subsequently sign the Matriculation Register results in the automatic forfeiture of admission, as the student will not be recognized by the university or the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

Administrative Directives for Matriculating Students

To ensure a hitch-free experience, the Office of the Registrar has issued several directives that students must follow before the Saturday deadline:

1. Payment and Collection of Academic Gowns

All matriculating students are mandatory required to wear the university’s official academic regalia. Gowns are to be collected from the respective Faculty Officers upon presentation of the following:

  • Evidence of payment of the matriculation/school fees.

  • The student’s temporary identification slip.

  • A duplicate copy of the payment receipt from the EBSU microfinance bank or approved digital portal.

2. Finalization of Physical Clearance

Only students who have completed their physical screening and had their O’Level results verified are eligible to be matriculated. Students with “pending” admission status on JAMB CAPS are urged to resolve such issues at the ICT center immediately to ensure their names are captured in the 28th Matriculation Brochure.

3. Return of Regalia

Students must note that academic gowns must be returned to the Faculty Officers no later than Tuesday, 3rd March 2026. Late returns usually attract a daily penalty fee, and failure to return the gown may lead to the withholding of first-semester results.

Invitation to Parents, Stakeholders, and the Public

The Vice-Chancellor extends a warm invitation to parents, guardians, and education stakeholders to witness this significant milestone. The university recognizes the sacrifices made by families to secure a future for these students and views the matriculation ceremony as a partnership-building event.

Education stakeholders and members of the general public are also invited to observe the growth of the institution. EBSU remains committed to its mission of providing quality education that is relevant to the needs of the society, and this 28th set of students represents the university’s contribution to the future human capital of Ebonyi State and Nigeria at large.

Security and Conduct During the Event

Given the large expected turnout, the University Security Unit has been directed to enforce strict traffic control and safety measures at the Main Campus. Visitors are advised to follow the directions of the security personnel regarding parking and entry points.

Furthermore, students are reminded that matriculation is a formal academic assembly. While celebrations with family are encouraged after the ceremony, the university maintains a zero-tolerance policy for rowdy behavior, unauthorized musical displays, or any form of conduct that disrupts the solemnity of the academic procession.

Final Word to the 2025/2026 Intake

As you prepare for February 28th, remember that the matriculation gown you wear is a symbol of the responsibility you now carry. Ebonyi State University provides the environment, but the effort toward graduation begins with the commitment you make during this ceremony. The university management looks forward to a successful event and a productive academic journey for all “Jambites.”
