All schools remain closed, says FG

The Federal Government has warned against resumption of any school at any level, saying all schools remained closed. Acting on the government’s directive, National Universities Commission, NUC, has warned vice chancellors against reopening universities for any activities.

The government, in a circular dated Friday, May 8, 2020, to heads of commissions and regulatory bodies in the education sector, insisted that schools at all levels were still closed, asking them to ignore fake news in the social media that it had directed resumption of schools.

The Ministry of Education, in the letter, through the Permanent Secretary, Sonny Echono, entitled: Re: Management of Coronavirus Pandemic,” said: “All schools shall remain closed as we closely monitor developments on the containment of COVID-19.”

The circular was sent to the executive secretaries, National Universities Commission, NUC; National Board for Technical Education, NBTE; National Commission for Colleges of Education, NCCE, and the Director, Basic and Secondary Education, BSE.

It read: “Further to our earlier circular, FME/PSE/HE/1041/C 1/Vol.1/137 of 19th March, 2020, this is to confirm that all schools shall remain closed as we monitor developments on the containment of COVID-19.

“This is without prejudice to officers on essential services and other operational exigencies as may be determined by the chief executive of each institution.

“All chief executives and other stakeholders are to ignore ‘fake news’ on the subject matter in the social media as the situation is under constant review and any decision on the resumption shall be conveyed through the appropriate channels.“

Following the directive by the ministry, the NUC has written to vice chancellors asking them to ensure the sustenance of ongoing closure of universities until further notice.

In a letter to all vice chancellors, signed by Director, Directorate of Executive Secretary’s Office, Chris Maiyaki, the NUC enjoined them to strictly adhere to the ministry’s directive that all universities remain closed to activities.

Federal Government warns vice-chancellors against reopening varsities

The Federal Ministry of Education has ordered vice chancellors to maintain the closure of federal, state and private universities in order to keep students and university communities safe from coronavirus.

The National Universities Commission gave the directive through a circular by the Director, Directorate of the Executive Secretary’s Office, Chris Maiyaki.

The circular read, “Vice chancellors will please recall that following the ministerial directive of March 19, 2020, the NUC issued two circulars on Friday, March 20, to convey approval for the closure of institutions for a period of one month effective from Monday, March 23.

“The Federal Ministry of Education has subsequently directed on Friday, March 8, that all schools remain closed as the Federal Government is closely monitoring developments on the containment of the COVID-19. Vice-Chancellors are to ignore the fake news being circulated in the social media as the situation is under constant review and any decision will be conveyed through the appropriate channels.

“I am therefore to forward herewith, a copy of the circular from the Federal Ministry of Education to vice chancellors of Nigerian universities for guidance and full compliance.”

The NUC had, on March 19, ordered the closure of tertiary institutions for one month as part of the measures to contain the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

Four days after the closure, the Academic Staff Union of Universities declared a “total and indefinite strike” over the failure of the Federal Government to keep to the 2019 Memorandum of Action and over the lingering crisis on the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System.

The union had begun a two-week warning strike on March 9, after which the lecturers embarked on a full strike.

Ekiti State University,EKSU Alumni Association gives Multi-million Naira Cash and Food Palliatives to members, staff and students

Following the resolve of the Eminent Persons’ Group of EKSU Alumni Association to initiate the distribution of palliative to needy members of the Association, the National Executive Council of EKSU Alumni Association ably led by Asiwaju (Dr.) Oludotun Adetunberu spearheaded the drive to achieving the spectacular feat.

The transparent process which made different categories of people in/from the University, students and some of the recently sacked members of Staff of EKSU, smile in this period of the COVID-19 lock- down, has further re-vitalized, re-energized and proliferated the trust in the present leadership of the Association.

In what appeared like a magic just in less than two weeks, over two hundred people benefitted in the palliatives. The first set of beneficiaries were names submitted by each of our nine local (state) chapters which include Ogun, Lagos, Abuja, Ekiti, Kwara, Kogi, Osun, Ondo and Oyo.

More so, a special category of members who was in dare need for cash intevention benefitted from the Cash palliatives . Among these people were those on health emergency and those who were recently dis-engaged from the work force of EKSU. It is on record also that before now, the President had assisted some of them with food palliatives.

It would also be recalled that recently the President was informed about the situation of thirty six of our French students who are presently undergoing further study in Togo. The program is compulsory and part of the requirements for the completion of their course, as it exposes them to a more practical language environment and culture.
Although the University had approved a token for them, the Association also deemed it fit to give each of them five thousand naira #5,000 . These students are important us. They are not yet part of the association, but our belief remains that they are part of the future of the Association. They won’t forget a day like this.

The breakdown is below;
1- One hundered and twenty six members on Chapter basis were given ten thousand naira #10,000 each.
2- Ten disengaged EKSU staff who are Alumni were given ten thousand naira #10,000 each.
3- Thirty six EKSU students in Togo were given five thousand naira #5,000 each.
4- Twenty people in this Special Consideration were given ten thousand naira #10,000 each.
5- Six Alumni Secretariat staff members were given ten thousand naira #10,000 each.
6- Fifteen Alumni with health Challenge were given ten thousand #10,000 naira each.
A brave and timely gesture from the National Leadership!
Adefela Adeleye,
National Publicity Secretary,
EKSU Alumni Association
