Understanding The Questions of Rape, Racism and Police Brutality: A Class Perspective By; Com. YNA Omomeewa
Outside Covid19 Pandemic, the events that have shaped the world social media in the past few days was that of the unjust killing of Floyd in USA, Tina, Uwa and Barakat here in Nigeria due to rape, racism and police brutality as the case maybe. Many youths and human right organizations have since then condemned the killings and demanded an end to rape, racism and police brutality. However, the onus of this writing is to critically espouse the demands for an equal society through a true democratic workers owned and control economy that use state resources to meets people needs; as the ultimate demand that could put an end to rape, racism, police brutality and other social vices.
Rape, Racism, and Police brutality are social vices among many other social vices. Infact, the relationship and activities of the perpetrator of social vices and their victims can be seen as that of a strong person taking advantage of the weak. This kind of relationship exist in different form in the society. Talk of rape, irrespective of the argument canvass as reason for rape, fundamentally a rapist is an individual who overpowered the victim. Police brutality is not anyway different, the feeling of overpowering the victim emboldened the act of police brutality and rape.
Racism is a concious/unconscious act of seeing others as inferior. Racism is more of social perception. For instance, in the case of Floyd. He was alleged of spending fake dollars, if the same allegation was levied on a white American. Would a white or black police have acted differently? To explain this locally, if a rich man kid roam around the neighborhood, it’s called wandering but if a poor man kid do such it’s called trespass. What account for this variation in perception is class. By class, I mean different in economic, social and political status. To any bigot, either racial or religious, they consider themselves the best of human, a feeling of being superior or better than others.
All over the world, some few individuals organized themselves, pretend to take sovereignty from the people through electoral process and constitutes the government and or the most advanced section of the society. They determine what is ideal, when they see no wrong they expect the society to see no wrong. This is why karl Marx and Freidich Engels in their work communist manifesto describes the history of man as the “history of class struggle” Man has always come in conflict with these individuals who at different times in history was constituted as slave master, feudal lords and presently as capitalist government; to right the wrongs in the society.
At the heart of righting the wrong is the question of what programmes and ideas will be able to resolve all social contradictions created by the present unequal social system. Our demands must feature demand for an equal society where the lives of everyone matter irrespective of race, ethnic, class and or social status side by side with demands to end rape, racism and police brutality. It must also include a demand for workers ownership and control of economy. This is a system that will put the need of the people first and put the collective wealth of the people into judicious use for the betterment of the society. For Instance, a well trained and well paid police with a police workers union to defend their rights will not brutalize ordinary citizens, a social system that support adequate provision of basic needs of life, jobs, security and good sex life will contains rape and other social vices and collective ownership of means of production will abolish racial, social and class inequality.
I therefore join my voice with that of many other youths to condemn unjust killings under whatever guise and equally lend my voice to demand and to work towards building a true democratic workers owned and control economy under which an equal society where a son of nobody will become somebody without knowing anybody is possible.
Thank you.

FG begins disinfection of public schools, airports ahead of resumption
ON JUNE 4, 20209:34 PMIN NEWS
Says private schools owners can engage own contractors for disinfection
By Joseph Erunke
ABUJA–THE federal government said it had begun disinfection of public schools across the country preparatory to resumption after months of shutdown following the outbreak of coronavirus pandemic in the country.
Also, the government said ahead of the resumption of activities in the aviation sector, it had concluded arrangements with aircraft owners on the suitable disinfectant it would adopt on the aircraft and the nation’s airport.
But government while it may not focus on the private schools in the ongoing project, for now, owners of private schools can engage registered and licensed firms to disinfect their schools
Minister of Environment, Dr. Mohammad Abubakar, told Vanguard on the sideline of a news conference he held to mark the 2020 World Environment Day, on Thursday that disinfection of public schools was ongoing already.
But he said the ministry was waiting for the additional response to accelerate the disinfection of schools.
“We have started disinfection of schools. We have our presence in all the six geopolitical zones of the country. We are waiting for the additional response to accelerate the disinfection of schools,” he said.
Asked if the project would cover private schools, the minister responded: “Usually, the first mandate is on the public schools.”
He, however, added:” We will continue the disinfection exercise”, saying, ” I know many will hire people to do their decontamination and disinfection.”
According to him, “We are very okay with that but the only caveat is that they have to hire people that are registered and licensed by the Federal Ministry of Environment under the Environmental Health Officers Registration Council of Nigeria.”
He explained that “Government, as you all know, can not do everything at once but we are starting and we will move forward as we continue.”
Also, commenting on the disinfection of airports ahead of activities in the aviation industry, he said the ministry had concluded arrangements with aircraft owners in that regard.
“For the airports, we have just concluded arrangements with the aircraft owners. Why we took that step is that aviation is a very sensitive sector where everything must be 100 percent,200 percent, and even 400 percent before aviation people can function. That is why you see some aircraft that have up to four engines so that when one stops, the others can function because up there, there is no parking space.
” So we are working with them and they have chosen the chemicals that they believe can work well and not cause any safety breaches if the chemicals are applied to the aircraft and other certain areas.”
He said the government was also going to disinfect motor parks, train stations, and other areas that attract a large crowd of people.
“We are going to disinfect parks, train stations, markets but for now these are the areas that we consider high-risk,” he said.
“The ministry is working towards all these because there are so many places to be contaminated

Lagos State to decide reopening of schools in two weeks
Lagos to decide reopening of schools in two weeks
The Lagos State Government says the decision to reopen schools in the state will be taken in two weeks.
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, said this during a televised press briefing on Thursday.
Sanwo-Olu said the decision would be taken after an extensive meeting with stakeholders in the education sector.
He said, “I know we are all eager to know the plans we have for the reopening of our learning institutions. There is still a lot more works to be done in this regard and we are looking at the educational sector very differently.
“However, we will continue to have our online learning at our seven higher institutions.
“On primary and secondary schools, we will be engaging with the Ministry of Education and Lagos State Safety Commission, and we will be coming out with a full and specific pronouncement in two weeks’ time.
“Once the protocols have been agreed with the stakeholders at the primary and secondary level, as to when and how, the schools will be reopening.”
He also gave permission to all manufacturing companies to operate between 7am and 6pm.
This is as the governor announced that as from June 19 mosques will reopen, while churches can reopen as from June 21.
Details later…
