In a major milestone for academic growth and the strengthening of Nigeria’s higher education sector, the National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved the establishment of three new full-time academic programmes for the Federal University Kashere (FUK) in Gombe State. The approval signifies the university’s steady progress in diversifying its academic offerings, expanding professional training opportunities, and meeting the rising demand for quality education in health and allied sciences.
According to the NUC, the approval followed a comprehensive resource verification exercise conducted by specialized panels of experts. These panels evaluated the university’s readiness by assessing the human and material resources, facilities, infrastructure, staffing, laboratory equipment, clinical teaching capacity, and overall suitability for the proposed programmes. After a satisfactory assessment, the Commission concluded that the institution met the minimum academic standards required to launch the new programmes.
The approval was formally communicated to the university in a letter dated 8th December 2025, addressed to the Vice-Chancellor. The letter, signed on behalf of the Executive Secretary of the NUC, confirmed that the following programmes have been approved to commence from the 2025/2026 academic session:
-
Bachelor of Dental Surgery (B.D.S.)
-
Bachelor of Nursing Science (B.N.Sc.)
-
Bachelor of Occupational Therapy (B.O.T.)
These programmes represent some of the most sought-after disciplines in the Nigerian healthcare sector. Their introduction at Federal University Kashere marks a significant step toward improving access to professional medical and allied health education in the North-East region.
A Boost for the Healthcare Sector
The inclusion of these programmes is expected to contribute meaningfully to addressing Nigeria’s healthcare workforce shortage. With increasing demand for trained medical personnel, nurses, and rehabilitation professionals, the establishment of these programmes provides a strategic response to workforce gaps and enhances the university’s role in national development.
-
Dental Surgery remains one of the critical yet undersupplied medical professions in Nigeria. Many communities suffer a shortage of trained dentists, making the introduction of B.D.S. at FUK a major advancement for oral healthcare training in the region.
-
Nursing Science is one of the most in-demand programmes in Nigeria and globally. The approved B.N.Sc. programme will help train highly skilled, licensed nurses equipped to work in hospitals, clinics, research centers, and public health sectors.
-
Occupational Therapy, an essential but less common field in Nigerian universities, focuses on rehabilitation, functional recovery, and improving the quality of life of patients with physical, developmental, or psychological challenges. The introduction of a B.O.T. programme places FUK among the few Nigerian institutions offering this specialized area of study.
Approval Covers Full-Time Mode Only
In the approval letter, the NUC emphasized that the newly approved programmes are authorized strictly for full-time study. Institutions intending to introduce part-time or distance-learning versions must undergo a separate resource verification process and secure formal approval before such modes can commence.
This clarification aligns with the Commission’s efforts to ensure the integrity, quality, and rigor of academic programmes, particularly in health-related disciplines that require extensive clinical training, laboratory experience, and supervised professional practice.
Programmes Must Retain Approved Titles
The Commission further directed that the universities must maintain the approved titles and nomenclature for each programme. The academic titles—B.D.S., B.N.Sc., and B.O.T.—are standardized and recognized globally. Any alteration or modification of these titles, whether for internal administrative use or external purposes, must receive prior consent from the NUC.
This directive aims to preserve uniformity across Nigerian universities and ensure that graduates receive qualifications that are easily comparable and recognized by regulatory bodies, employers, and international institutions.
Ensuring Quality and Sustainable Growth
The NUC also highlighted the importance of sustaining high academic standards. The university has been urged to ensure continuous improvement in:
-
Academic staffing (including recruiting qualified lecturers)
-
Clinical training facilities
-
Laboratory equipment and teaching materials
-
Curriculum development
-
Student support services
-
Research and innovation capacity
By maintaining adequate human and material resources, the university can guarantee long-term sustainability, student success, and international relevance.
The Commission’s directives are consistent with its mandate to ensure that Nigerian universities deliver programmes that meet global best practices, especially in technical and health-related disciplines.
A Milestone for Federal University Kashere
For the Federal University Kashere, this approval represents a new phase of institutional growth. Established as part of the federal government’s initiative to expand access to higher education, FUK has continued to develop rapidly, both in terms of academic offerings and infrastructural expansion.
The introduction of these three programmes in the 2025/2026 academic session places the institution on a stronger trajectory toward becoming a competitive center for medical and allied health education.
Students in the North-East region, in particular, will benefit greatly from the increased access to high-demand health science programmes without the need to travel far or relocate to other regions.
Enhancing Community Impact and National Development
Beyond academic relevance, the establishment of the programmes aligns with Nigeria’s broader goals to strengthen healthcare service delivery, reduce medical tourism, and improve local capacity for clinical care and rehabilitative services.
-
Graduates of Dental Surgery will contribute to improving oral health outcomes in communities.
-
Nursing Science graduates will play key roles in hospitals, emergency care, maternal health, and global nursing missions.
-
Occupational Therapy graduates will support rehabilitation centers, special needs programmes, and recovery care for accident victims and patients with developmental disorders.
These contributions highlight the broader impact of the newly approved programmes on both the educational system and the country’s healthcare delivery framework.
Looking Ahead
As the university prepares to admit its first batch of students into these programmes in the 2025/2026 academic session, expectations are high among prospective students, parents, and stakeholders in the education sector.
The approval reinforces the Federal University Kashere’s commitment to academic excellence, professional training, and national service. It also reflects the NUC’s ongoing efforts to expand quality programmes across Nigerian universities while ensuring that institutions adhere to the required standards.
The introduction of Dental Surgery, Nursing Science, and Occupational Therapy marks a strategic investment in the future—strengthening both the university’s profile and Nigeria’s healthcare workforce.
