The University of Lagos and the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom, signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Thursday, which will see the UK institution establish a Transnational Education Unit at UNILAG.
The MoU will see the two universities collaborate with Nigeria’s Ministry of Education to develop detailed proposals for the Transnational Education Unit in UNILAG, with a target to begin delivering programmes from 2027.
The unit, upon its establishment, will consider the delivery of programmes in areas such as Applied Intelligence, Digital Communications and Media, health sciences, and engineering.
The signing by the UNILAG Vice-Chancellor, Prof Folasade Ogunsola, and the Provost of the University of Birmingham, Prof Nick Vaughan-Williams, at the Senate Chamber of UNILAG, was witnessed by Nigeria’s Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa; the UK Deputy High Commissioner to Nigeria, Jonny Baxter; the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Prof Abdullahi Ribadu; TETFund’s Director of Academic Staff Training and Development, Dr Hadiza Ismail, among other education stakeholders.
In his remarks, the education minister noted that the partnership between the two universities aligned with the ministry’s goal of producing graduates who are empowered to compete globally and contribute meaningfully to national development.
Alausa said, “A transnational education partnership opens the door to exciting research collaborations in cutting-edge fields such as renewable energy, healthcare, and AI.
“It also has the potential to increase access to globally recognised programmes for Nigerian students, expanding their horizons and opportunities for personal and professional growth.
“Furthermore, this partnership provides students with international exposure, thereby shaping them into captains in their respective fields. The impact on Nigeria’s socio-economic development is substantial, with potential breakthroughs in critical sectors, leveraging our partners’ expertise to address local and global challenges.”
He also noted that the collaboration has the potential to provide Nigerians at home with increased access to quality education, top-tier academic programmes, and prestigious degrees; enhance curriculum and pedagogy; improve employability and skills acquisition; and foster exchange and global networking.
Alausa stated, “The model of TNE partnership we are witnessing today is the University of Birmingham’s validated study programmes to be delivered at the University of Lagos.
“The University of Lagos and the University of Birmingham have signed a Memorandum of Understanding on international education to explore areas of undergraduate and postgraduate education in Nigeria, where the University of Birmingham will bring its high-quality, global best-standard education to partner with us in Nigeria in the areas of data science, artificial intelligence, renewable energy, and healthcare.
“It is still a process, and we are hoping that by 2027, the first batch of students will be admitted, but it is still a process. We can expose our students to high-quality education delivered by one of the best universities in the world here in Nigeria.
“Our children will be in Nigeria getting a world-class education. We will also have increased capacity development of our own faculty in Nigeria, and we will collaborate in the area of research, where we can begin to cascade into areas of international research.”
The UNILAG Vice-Chancellor explained that the collaboration emphasised the university’s drive for equitable global partnerships in higher education and responded to the increasing demand for internationally competitive university education.
Ogunsola added that the partnership was a critical step towards modernising curricula, enhancing global visibility, and strengthening research fields, including AI, health sciences, and engineering.
She said, “We have been working with the University of Birmingham for 10 years, but in one narrow area. We are now taking it to other programmes that would better serve the development of Nigeria.
“This new partnership offers a refreshing, accessible structure for students seeking to advance knowledge across diverse national and global contexts and strengthens our commitment to producing graduates who are globally competent yet deeply attuned to the needs of our society.
“This partnership reflects UNILAG’s broader vision of reimagining partnerships built on mutual respect, co-creation, and shared responsibility. This partnership will continue to create more experiences on lived realities and experiential learning through equitable engagement between the two institutions. This collaboration focuses on transnational education to provide world-class training in Nigeria.”
Speaking, the University of Birmingham Provost said the UK institution continued to seek global partnerships and opportunities in the transnational education space to equip graduates to be future-ready.
Vaughan-Williams noted that the UK university chose to collaborate with UNILAG, citing shared ambition, shared values, a compelling vision to be among the top 200 universities globally, and a commitment to serving their communities.
He said, “This is building on very secure and sustainable partnerships that already exist. For 10 years, we have been working together on a global surgery hub to support better surgical environments that lead to improved lives for millions of people across Nigeria and globally.
“We want to build on that to think about opportunities in the transnational education space. There are opportunities to collaborate beyond that particular partnership and to think about relationships across Nigeria and beyond. We are about the future of Nigeria. We are about equipping graduates to become leaders of tomorrow with skills so that they are future-ready in the workplace, so that they can create jobs to support Nigeria’s economy and society.”
The UK Deputy High Commissioner, Baxter, noted that the partnership would enable Nigerians to have access to quality education experiences locally.
Baxter also noted that the partnership would help provide admission opportunities to many Nigerians who are unable to secure higher education due to the inadequate carrying capacity of tertiary institutions.
He said, “The UK is aware of the deep and long-lasting education ties between Nigeria and the UK. The existing partnership is making those educational experiences accessible to many more people. Bringing British education into Nigeria is a way of allowing more Nigerians to access that educational experience.
“This partnership between the University of Birmingham and the University of Lagos shows how UK–Nigeria collaboration can broaden access to the UK’s world-class education, expand opportunities for young people, and support innovation in vital fields like artificial intelligence.
“By bringing together Birmingham’s expertise with UNILAG’s academic reputation, both institutions will benefit from shared learning, joint research, and deeper academic exchange, while equipping the next generation with the skills needed for a rapidly evolving digital world.”
Ribadu, the NUC Executive Secretary, pointed to the opportunities the collaboration offers, including joint research, staff and student exchange programmes, knowledge exchange, and joint partnerships to address global needs.

The “Early Bird” Discount: If you pay your entire fee before the school resumes, the university will give you a 5% discount. This saves you a lot of money!

The Split Payment Option: If you can’t pay everything at once, you can pay in two parts:

How to Pay Safely
To make sure your money gets to the school safely, you must follow these rules:

Online Only: All payments must start on the official University portal.

No Cash: Never give cash to anyone who says they work for the school. UAST does not allow cash payments to individuals.

Bank Channels: Use the list of approved banks that the school will provide.

Great news for all the new students at Umaru Musa Yar’adua University (UMYU)! If you have already finished your screening for the 2025/2026 school year, it is time for the next big step. The school has officially opened the doors for you to pay your fees and pick your classes!
This process started on Thursday, 23rd January 2026. If you haven’t started yet, don’t worry—you can go online right now and get everything done. This is the part where you officially “lock in” your spot as a student.
The Three Main Jobs You Need to Do
To finish your registration, you need to visit the College Portal. You will use the same place where you did your Post-UTME application. Once you log in, there are three very important jobs to finish:

Update Your Biodata: This is just a fancy way of saying “Check your info.” You need to make sure the school has your correct name, home address, and phone number.

Pay Your School Fees: You will need to click a button to “Generate a Transaction ID.” This is like a special digital receipt code. Once you have it, you can pay your fees so the school knows you are ready to study.

Complete Course Registration: This is the best part! This is where you pick the actual classes you will be attending this year.
How to Get it Right the First Time
Sometimes, computer portals can be a little confusing. The university leaders want to make sure you don’t make any mistakes. They have created a special “Map” to help you, called the Registration Guidelines.
Pro Tip: Before you click anything, open the Registration Guidelines PDF. It tells you exactly which buttons to press and what to do if you get stuck. Reading this first will save you a lot of time!
A Quick Checklist for Success
To make sure your registration goes smoothly, here is what you should have ready before you sit down at the computer:

Your Login Details: Make sure you have your username and password for the UMYU Portal.

The Fees Money: Whether you are paying at a bank or online with a card, make sure the money is ready.

A Quiet Spot: Try to do your registration in a place with good internet so the computer doesn’t turn off in the middle of your payment.

A Printer: You will want to print out your “Course Form” and your “Payment Receipt” to keep in a safe folder.

What is a Matriculation Ceremony?
If you are a new student, you might wonder why everyone is so excited. A matriculation ceremony is like a “Grand Opening” for your education.
During the ceremony, you will wear a special long robe called an academic gown. You will stand up with your classmates and take a special oath. By taking this oath, you are promising to follow the rules of the school and to work very hard on your studies. Once the ceremony is over, you are officially a “Landmarker”!
Why 16 is a Special Number
This is the 16th time Landmark University has held this ceremony. Over the years, thousands of students have stood where you are standing today. Many of them are now successful doctors, engineers, and farmers helping the world. By being part of the 16th class, you are joining a long line of successful people.
Tips for a Wonderful Matriculation Day
