ASUU Declares Indefinite Strike Across LASU, LASUED, LASUSTECH

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has declared a total and indefinite strike across the three Lagos State-owned universities over the non-implementation of the 2025 Federal Government and ASUU agreement by the state government.

The decision was taken on Tuesday at separate congresses of ASUU branches at Lagos State University, LASU, Ojo, Lagos State University of Education, LASUED, Oto/Ijanikin, and Lagos State University of Science and Technology, LASUSTECH, Ikorodu.

The declaration followed the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the Lagos State Government on August 31, 2026, demanding the domestication and implementation of the December 2025 ASUU-FG agreement in the state-owned institutions.

In a joint statement titled, “Expiration of Ultimatum: ASUU Declares Total, Indefinite Strike Across Lagos State-owned Universities,” the unions said the industrial action took effect immediately.

The statement was signed by ASUU-LASU Coordinator, Dr. Olusegun Babalola, Acting ASUU-LASUED Coordinator, Comrade Grace Olayemi, and ASUU-LASUSTECH Coordinator, Comrade Murisiku Onigemo.

According to the unions, the decision became necessary after the 14-day deadline expired without a satisfactory resolution or concrete commitment from the state government.

The unions said they had also issued a final warning on September 10, stressing that “silence is no longer an option,” but the September 13 deadline equally passed without the government initiating dialogue.

ASUU said its major demand is the full domestication and implementation of the December 2025 ASUU-FGN agreement in all Lagos State-owned universities, including the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance, CATA, and critical welfare provisions for serving and retired academic staff.

The union said it had exercised restraint and consistently pursued dialogue, arguing that the responsibility for the disruption rests with the Lagos State Government over what it described as continued inaction.

It also disclosed that the industrial action had the backing of the ASUU national leadership, covering the series of engagements and formal communications sent to university managements, governing councils and the Visitor before the ultimatum was issued.

ASUU further urged the Lagos State Government to follow the example of other state governors who, according to the union, had moved swiftly to resolve similar issues in their respective universities.

The union warned that the strike would remain indefinite until meaningful engagement leads to a satisfactory resolution and the state government signs, domesticates and fully implements the applicable provisions of the 2025 agreement.

While expressing regret over the implications of the action for the academic calendar and the wider university community, ASUU appealed to students, parents and other stakeholders for their understanding and support.

The union also stressed that the action was not targeted at the managements of the three universities, but was aimed at compelling the state government to address the outstanding issues.

Lagos State is among the 20 states identified by ASUU national where state governments have yet to implement the 2025 Federal Government and ASUU agreement.
