The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) Branch, has officially suspended the industrial action it embarked upon on May 19, 2026, paving the way for the resumption of academic activities across the institution.

The decision to suspend the strike was reached during an emergency congress of the Union held at the Calabar Campus of the University after extensive deliberations on the progress made in resolving the issues that led to the industrial action.

Strike Suspension Follows Government Intervention

The suspension of the strike comes after a series of interventions by the management of the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) and the Cross River State Government aimed at restoring industrial harmony within the institution.

As part of the reconciliation efforts, the Vice-Chancellor of UNICROSS, Professor Francisca Bassey, led members of the University’s management alongside the leadership of the ASUU UNICROSS Branch to a closed-door meeting with the Governor of Cross River State, Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu.

Before that engagement, the Vice-Chancellor had also led student representatives to a separate meeting with the Governor to discuss the concerns surrounding the prolonged strike and its impact on academic activities.

According to the Union, the decision to suspend the strike followed the assurances given by the Governor during these engagements regarding the resolution of the issues raised by the lecturers.

Academic Activities to Resume

With the suspension of the industrial action, normal academic activities are expected to resume across all campuses of the University of Cross River State.

The development brings relief to thousands of students whose academic programmes were disrupted following the commencement of the strike in May 2026.

The University management is expected to announce a revised academic calendar and provide further directives on the resumption of lectures and other academic activities.
