STATE UNIVERSITY OF MEDICAL AND APPLIED SCIENCES, ENUGU (SUMAS) GETS NUC FULL ACCREDITATION FOR 15 ACADEMIC PROGRAMES
The National Universities Commission (NUC) has officially granted full accreditation to fifteen academic programmes at the State University of Medical and Applied Sciences (SUMAS), Igbo-Eno, following its comprehensive and rigorous accreditation evaluation exercise conducted between October 28 and December 3, 2025.
The accreditation comes after an intensive evaluation process during which NUC panels conducted a detailed assessment of academic standards, staffing quality, infrastructure, laboratory facilities, library resources, and overall institutional readiness across the affected departments.
The programmes that have successfully secured full accreditation include
1. Doctor of Physiotherapy
2. Human Anatomy
3. Human Physiology
4. Medical Laboratory Science
5. Nursing Science
6. Human Nutrition and Dietetics
7. Radiography and Radiation Science
8. Computer Science
9. Information and Communication Technology
10. Architecture
11. Doctor of Pharmacy
12. Applied Microbiology and Brewing
13. Biochemistry
14. Genetics and Biotechnology
15. Pure and Industrial Chemistry
This milestone marks a significant achievement for SUMAS, reinforcing its growing reputation as a center of excellence in medical and applied sciences education in Nigeria.
Reacting to the development, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. James C. Ogbonna, expressed profound gratitude to the NUC for the thorough and transparent accreditation process. He commended the dedication and resilience of the university’s management, staff, and students, whose collective efforts contributed to the success recorded.
According to him, “The accreditation of these programmes is a strong validation of our commitment to quality education, academic excellence, and global best practices. We remain committed to sustaining and improving on these standards.”
The Director of Academic Planning, Prof Jerry Ugwuanyi, also lauded the teamwork and professionalism demonstrated throughout the exercise, noting that the university community approached the process with determination and confidence.
The accreditation outcome not only affirms the quality of teaching and research at SUMAS but also positions the institution to attract more students, partnerships, and opportunities within and beyond Nigeria.
