FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY, AKURE (FUTA) MEDICAL PROGRAMME GETS MDCN SEAL OF APPROVAL

The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has granted accreditation to the College of Heath Sciences of the Federal University of Technology Akure, FUTA authorizing it to continue with the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) programme. The MDCN team led by the Deputy Registrar , Dr. Nnameka Nwakanma gave the seal of approval during its accreditation visit to the institution on Wednesday April 22,2026. The council also approved an admission quota of 100 medical students for the university.

During the visit and engagement with the management led by the Vice Chancellor Professor Adenike Oladiji, Dr. Nwakanma expressed his satisfaction with the level of preparedness demonstrated by the University. He noted that the engagement was productive and emphasized the importance of aligning the College’s operations with the regulatory standards set by the Council. He further stated that the Council remains committed to supporting institutions through the accreditation process and ensuring that medical and dental education in Nigeria meets global best practices.

As part of the accreditation exercise, MDCN delegation undertook a comprehensive inspection of facilities within the College of Health Sciences. The assessment covered departments under the Basic Medical Sciences, the Basic Clinical Sciences and clinical Sciences. The delegation inspected facilities at Departments of Human Anatomy, Medical Microbiology, Physiology, community medicine, Anatomic Pathology, Chemical Pathology, Haematology and Blood Transfusion, Microbial Pathology, as well as Pharmacology and Therapeutics. These departments are central to the clinical training phase and serve as the interface between basic science and patient care.

In relation to these departments, specific facilities assessed during the visit were the Physiology Laboratory and the Animal House, the Histology and Histopathology Laboratory, and the Medical Museum. In addition, the delegation visited the Comprehensive Health Centre Ijare to evaluate the Rural Community Health Practice Centre and other support facilities located there. The delegation, which evaluated the adequacy of equipment, space, and instructional materials in these units to determine their compliance with MDCN standards for medical training, also visited the FUTA Teaching Hospital where they were received by the Chief Medical Director , Professor Olusegun Ojo.

During the inspection, The Acting Provost of FUTA College of Health Sciences and Professor of Human Anatomy, Professor Victor Ukwenya, presented an overview of the College to the MDCN delegation. His briefing focused on the enabling statute, the organogram, and the operating guidelines that govern the College. The Acting Provost emphasized that the design and organization of the College is deliberate, aimed at fostering integration between preclinical and clinical training while ensuring administrative efficiency and concluded by stating that the facilities and structure presented were intended to meet MDCN requirements and to support the College’s mandate of producing competent health and medical professionals.

The Chief Medical Director of FUTA Teaching Hospital ,Professor Ojo described the approval of the MDCN as a landmark achievement. “ We are now going to prepare for our first Professional Examination which this accreditation has given us the permission to do. That is a monumental undertaking and we will start the preparation immediately. It’s a wonderful development that students have the hope to move forward. It’s a great achievement for the Vice Chancellor and the University. We thank God for everything,” Professor Ojo Stated.

In her address the Vice Chancellor of FUTA, Professor Adenike Oladiji expressed profound appreciation to the Deputy Registrar, Dr. Nwakanma, and his team for honoring the University with their presence. She noted that the University Management, alongside the Provost and Heads of Units of the College of Health Sciences, had worked diligently to put in place the necessary structures and facilities required for the accreditation exercise. The Vice Chancellor emphasized that the University remains fully committed to excellence in medical education and is determined to ensure that all standards stipulated by the Council are met. She further assured the delegation of the University’s openness to constructive observations and its readiness to implement recommendations that would strengthen the College of Health Sciences.

The Vice Chancellor also seized the occasion to appreciate the Deji of Akure Kingdom , Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi for mobilizing the key leaders of the Kingdom to contribute to the development of FUTA and the medical programme through the donation of multi-million-naira ultra-modern Teaching laboratories and accommodation facility for medical students to facilitate and enhance teaching and learning. “ I celebrate the worthy sons and daughters of Akure that rose to our clarion call. This commitment to support FUTA MBBS programme, without any shred of doubt, will be beneficial to generations after generations,” the Vice Chancellor stated.
