ALVAN IKOKU FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF EDUCATION ANNOUNCES MATRICULATION CEREMONY
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Stella Ngozi Lemchi, on behalf of the Management, Staff, and Students of Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education, Owerri, has formally announced the institution’s Second Matriculation Ceremony. This event represents a monumental milestone in the university’s transition following its upgrade to a full-fledged Federal University of Education. The ceremony is a statutory requirement that marks the formal induction of newly admitted students into the academic and social community of the university for the 2025/2026 academic session.
Scheduled for Thursday, 19th February 2026, the ceremony serves as a public declaration of the students’ commitment to the laws, statutes, and academic standards of the institution. It is the moment where provisional admission is transformed into a formal, recorded studentship.
Ceremony Schedule and Logistical Arrangements
To ensure the dignity and administrative success of the event, the university has established a strict timeline and venue protocol. All stakeholders, particularly the matriculating students and their guests, are expected to adhere to the following schedule:
-
Date: Thursday, 19th February 2026.
-
Procession Commencement: 10:00 a.m. Prompt.
-
Procession Assembly Point: The Multi-Purpose Court.
-
Grand Venue: The University Pavilion.
-
Seating Deadline: All matriculants must be seated by 11:00 a.m.
The matriculation procession is a significant academic tradition involving the Vice-Chancellor, members of the University Senate, and the academic staff. Students are required to join this procession from the Multi-Purpose Court, symbolizing their entry into the world of scholarship under the guidance of their mentors.
Academic Regalia and Administrative Requirements
In a notice signed by the University Registrar, Dr. (Mrs.) Maria Njoku, the management emphasized that participation is contingent upon meeting the institution’s formal requirements.
Gown Hiring and Collection The use of the official Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education academic gown is mandatory for all freshers. Students are typically required to pay a hiring fee via the designated university portal or Remita platform. Once payment is confirmed, gowns are distributed through the various Faculty Offices. Students are advised to secure their gowns at least 48 hours before the ceremony to avoid last-minute congestion.
The Matriculation Oath The high point of the ceremony is the administration of the Matriculation Oath. By taking this oath, students pledge to be of good conduct, to respect the constituted authorities of the university, and to shun all forms of social vices, including cultism and examination malpractice.
Signing the Matricula Following the public ceremony, students are required to sign the Matriculation Register (the Matricula) at their respective departments. This signature is the legal evidence of their registration. Students who fail to sign the register, even if they attended the ceremony, will not be recognized as bona fide students of the university and may face difficulties with future registrations or examinations.
Significance of the “Second” Matriculation
As this is only the second matriculation since the institution attained university status, it carries a unique historical weight. It highlights the university’s expanding capacity to produce highly skilled educators and specialists for the Nigerian education sector. The transition from a College of Education to a Federal University has brought about revamped curricula, enhanced research facilities, and a more robust academic environment, all of which the new intake will benefit from.
Instructions to the General Public and Guests
The university cordially invites parents, guardians, and well-wishers to witness this joyous occasion. However, to maintain the solemnity of the academic environment, the management requests that:
-
Guests remain within the designated spectator areas at the University Pavilion.
-
Unauthorized photographers be restricted from the main procession line to avoid obstructing the movement of the academic body.
-
All attendees cooperate with the University Security Unit to ensure a smooth flow of traffic within the campus.
The Vice-Chancellor and the entire university management congratulate the matriculants and wish them a successful and transformative academic journey at Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education.
