LAGOS STATE UNIVERSITY (LASU) ISSUES IMPORTANT NOTICE TO STUDENTS ON NELFUND LOAN

The Management of Lagos State University (LASU), through the Office of the Bursar, has issued an essential administrative directive concerning the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND). This notice is specifically targeted at students for whom the university received loan disbursements in 2025, covering the 2023/2024 academic session, but who had previously settled their school fees out-of-pocket.

To facilitate the legal and transparent transfer of these funds back to the rightful student beneficiaries, the university has outlined a mandatory refund application process. This procedure is designed to ensure financial accountability and verify that the disbursed funds are accurately reconciled with student accounts.

Administrative Framework for the Refund Process

The NELFUND initiative is a federal intervention designed to alleviate the financial burden of tuition on Nigerian students. In instances where a student has already paid their fees for the 2023/2024 session before the loan was disbursed to the university, the institution is obligated to refund the surplus amount to the student.

To initiate this, the university requires a formal paper trail to satisfy audit requirements and the Treasury Single Account (TSA) protocols.

Submission Details and Location

All eligible students must submit a formal written request letter. The university has designated a specific administrative unit to handle these sensitive financial reconciliations:

  • Office of Delivery: Office of the Senior Deputy Bursar, Faculties and Schools Unit.

  • Physical Address: 4th Floor, Babatunde Raji Fashola Senate Building, LASU Main Campus, Ojo.

  • Submission Format: Hard copies only. Electronic submissions (email or portal uploads) are strictly prohibited for this specific exercise to ensure the authenticity of attached receipts and signatures.

Documentation Requirements

The “Refund Request Letter” must be professionally drafted and include the following core identifiers to prevent payment misdirection:

  1. Full Name (As it appears on the university portal and NELFUND application).

  2. Matriculation Number.

  3. Bank Account Details (Ensure the account name matches the student name to avoid bank reversals).

  4. Phone Number.

Mandatory Attachments:

In addition to the letter, students must provide physical evidence of their prior payment and their NELFUND status:

  • i. School Fees Payment Receipt: Specifically for the 2024/2025 session, provided the payment was made before September 2025.

  • ii. NELFUND Disbursement Confirmation Slip: This is the document generated from the NELFUND portal confirming that your loan was successful and sent to LASU.

Critical Deadlines and Compliance

The university has set a very tight window for this exercise to ensure that all refunds are processed before the conclusion of the current financial quarter.

  • Deadline for Submission: Friday, 13th February 2026.

  • Consequence of Non-Compliance: Students who fail to submit their hard-copy applications by this date risk significant delays in their refund processing. The university’s accounts department must reconcile these funds collectively; therefore, late individual applications create administrative bottlenecks that may lead to the suspension of the refund window for the session.

Strategic Guide for Students

Given the importance of this refund, students are advised to:

  • Verify Account Details: Double-check that the NUBAN account number provided is active and capable of receiving the specific loan amount.

  • Duplicate Your Records: Before submitting your hard copy to the 4th Floor of the Senate Building, ensure you have a photocopied set for your own records, preferably stamped “Received” by the Bursary office upon submission.

  • Address Accuracy: Ensure the letter is addressed correctly to the Senior Deputy Bursar (Faculties and Schools) to avoid the file being misrouted within the Senate Building.

The Lagos State University remains committed to the welfare of its students and the transparent management of all federal and state interventions.
