The Management of Delta State Polytechnic, Otefe-Oghara (DESPO), has formally scheduled the 2025/2026 Matriculation Ceremony. This ceremony is the “gold standard” for all freshers, as it represents the official legal and academic transition from “provisional admission” to “fully registered studentship.” In a memorandum issued on January 30, 2026, the Registrar, Efedi Chukwuemeke, emphasized that attendance is mandatory for all newly admitted students.

Ceremony Schedule and Logistics

Event Detail Information
Date Friday, 13th February, 2026
Venue Chief James Onanefe Ibori Auditorium
Time 10:00 a.m. Prompt

The Legal Weight of Matriculation

Matriculation is not just a photo opportunity; it is a formal contract between you and the Polytechnic. During this event, you will take the Matriculation Oath, pledging to abide by the institution’s rules, abstain from cultism, and uphold academic integrity.

Following the oath, students are typically required to sign the Matriculation Register at their respective departments. This register is the official document used by the Polytechnic and the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to verify your enrollment. Failure to participate in this ceremony can lead to the forfeiture of your admission, as the institution will assume the candidate has declined the offer.

Requirements for Freshers

To ensure a successful and hitch-free ceremony, all freshers must adhere to the following protocols:

Academic Gowns and Identification

Students are required to collect their academic robes from their Faculty or Departmental Officers before the ceremony. To collect a gown, you must show proof of registration and fee payment. Please ensure these gowns are handled with care and returned by the stipulated deadline (usually the following Monday) to avoid late return fines.

Arrival and Seating

The Registrar has directed that all freshers be seated by 9:30 a.m. to allow for the orderly arrival of the Academic Procession (comprising the Rector, Deans, and other principal officers). Latecomers may be denied entry into the auditorium once the procession has entered.

Standard of Conduct and Dress Code

Proper decorum is expected. Men should be dressed in formal suits or complete traditional attire under their academic gowns. Ladies are encouraged to wear modest English dresses or corporate attire. The Polytechnic maintains a zero-tolerance policy for indecent dressing; security and staff are mandated to turn back any student who violates the dress code at the auditorium entrance.

Administrative Oversight

The Registrar has ensured that all relevant bodies, including the Student Union Government (SUG) and the security unit, are synchronized to handle the crowd and logistics. Parents and guardians are welcome to attend, though they are usually seated in designated areas outside or at the back of the auditorium to give priority seating to the matriculants.
