The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has called on the National Assembly to create laws that prohibit government officials from sending their children to school abroad. The president of the union, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, gave the charge in Abuja at a meeting with the Minister of Labour and Employment and other representatives of the Federal Government.

According to ASSU, the decay currently allowed and experienced in public universities is because the children of government officials are sent to study abroad, hence, making the officials act apathetic towards the many issues experienced in Nigerian public schools.

Osodeke added that government officials in the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration should be made to withdraw their children from foreign universities and enrolled in Nigeria public universities, while the government also makes it mandatory for all appointees to have their children attend universities in the country, and those whose children cannot school in Nigeria should not be appointed.

This is to inform UTME Candidates who are still interested in seeking admission into Osun State University that the management has extended the deadline for the Post-UTME Application.

According to the management, the deadline is now 29th October 2021.

Prof. Kayode Oyebode Adebowale has emerged as the new Vice Chancellor (VC) of the University of Ibadan (UI).

Adebowale’s candidature was ratified by the UI Council led by Chief John Odigie-Oyegun on Thursday.

With his emergence, Adebowale becomes the 13th indigenous VC of the over 70-year-old institution.

The Lagos State University (LASU) will hold the
2020/2021 matriculation ceremony for the newly admitted students of the university as follows :

The Federal university Oye-ekiti (FUOYE) hereby informs all Applicants who have applied for to FUOYE in the 2021 UTME to visit the registration portal (www.ecampus.fuoye.edu.ng/postutme)in order to participate in the online screening Exercise between Tuesday,12th of October,2021 to Friday, 29th of October,2021.

Fayemi while spoke at an event in Ibadan said the present situation in the country didn’t warrant politics of blame and opportunistic opposition, but “it is time to build a nation and not to fritter it away.”

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Fayemi stressed that Nigeria is in need of patriotic statesmen and women and not rumour mongers, ethnic crisis entrepreneurs, provincial men of little minds who see everything from the prism of ethnic and religious conspiracy.

According to him, one way to bring the current wave of insecurity to a halt is to recruit a large number of people to join the police and the military, on a short service or otherwise.

He pointed out that that one of the cheapest and fastest ways to handle this was to amend the law setting up the Nation Youths Service Corps (NYSC).

The Governor explained that the existing orientation camps can be used to train willing and able graduates to reflate the security personnel under a special arrangement that will be worked out.

He said corps members who cannot join the military services can serve in their community without pay.

“By available statistics, we need minimum of 200,000 personnel to boost the fighting power of our men.

“This number is very large and a potential financial and logistic nightmare, yet we cannot delay any further.

“The ungoverned spaces needed to be closed up quickly by motivated men with the singular objective to save the nation.That takes us to the number two issue of financing and arming large recruitment.

“With this, we can use the existing orientation camps to train willing and able graduates to reflate the security personnel under a special arrangement that will be worked out.

“That way, the fund that is currently deployed to the NYSC can be used with just some additional funding, which could be sourced through a national emergency fund for the next five to 10 years.

“Those who cannot join the military services can serve in their community without pay, if we must still retain the NYSC for everyone.

“To incentivise those who may volunteer to serve, they will have a separate certificate and medal of honour in addition to having priority for military, paramilitary and civil or public service recruitment after service.

“We also need to encourage investment in the real sectors that can engage people and reduce unemployment, which is a major source of insecurity,” the NGF chairman added.

Fayemi, however, said he has confidence that though, the situation might look helpless, sooner than later, the security situation would see a significant improvement and that Nigeria would come out stronger from this moment of national distress.

A reconciliation committee headed by Prof. Dapo Asaju has been set up to reconcile the ASUU-LASU factions by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello.

The Coordinator of the Varsity’s Centre for Information Press and Public Relations, Mr. Ademola, revealed this via a statement made known to the Press which reads thus:

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, in recognition of the role of healthy staff unions in the advancement of the objectives of the university as well as the welfare of staff, has constituted a committee for the reconciliation of the different groups within the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Lagos State University Chapter (ASUU-LASU).

Members of the Committee include the following:

The terms of the reference reads:

“The terms of reference of the Committee are: To mediate between members of ASUU-LASU led by Dr. I. Oyewunmi and that led by Prof. A.O. Bakare, to find possible ways of resolving the impasse between the two sets of members of ASUU-LASU in order to ensure the unity of the union; and to make any other recommendations as appropriate on the matter.

“Pursuant to the above, the committee hereby calls for submission of memoranda from interested members of the union and generality of the university community on how to resolve the issue. The memorandum should be submitted either in hard and soft copies. While hard copies should be submitted to the Secretary in the Registrar’s Office, 5th floor, Babajide Raji Fashola Senate Building, the soft copies should be forwarded to asuu [email protected]

Deadline for submission is two (2) weeks from the date of publication, that is, Monday, 25th October, 2021.

“Sequel to the reception of submitted memoranda, the Committee will consider all submissions at its subsequent meetings and thereafter, invite stakeholders for interactions.

“There shall be two venues for the interactive sessions; Lagos State University, Ojo Campus and Lagos State University College of Medicine, Ikeja respectively. Interested stakeholders shall have the privilege to choose between any of the venues for the interactive sessions and communicate same to the Committee at the appropriate time.

“The Committee hereby solicit for prayer, cooperation and support from all members of the University Community in ensuring a successful delivery of its mandate.”

Recall that the immediate past VC, Prof. Olanrewaju Fagbohun was at loggerheads with the ASUU-LASU leadership headed by Dr. Isaac Oyewunmi which led to his dismissal by LASU on September 12, 2019 as well as the Secretary, Dr. Tony Dansu and the Assistant Secretary, Adeolu Oyekan and emergence of Dr. Ibrahim Bakare as the new chairman.

The sacked Executives were accused of sabotage against the management which also cumulated to the national body of ASUU ignoring the new ASUU-LASU Executives.

This new reconciliation also could mean that the matter which is challenged in the court might be withdrawn for peace to reign and the factions unified.

Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has commenced the 2021/2022 admission screening exercise.A statement made available to newsmen on Tuesday, and co-signed by the Public Relations (PRO) of the University, Foluso Ogunmodede and Media Adviser to the VC, Wole Balogun, disclosed that the announcement for the commencement of the screening exercise was made public on Tuesday.

The management of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti has released the cut-off mark for the 2021/2022 academic session admission exercise. FUOYE general Post-UTME minimum cut-off mark for the 2021/2022 academic session is 160 and Above.

This will be the JAMB score that will be used for admission into FUOYE for the 2021/2022 academic session.
