The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has reacted to the reports currently making its rounds on social media that it advised members of the scheme to prepare money for ransom if they get abducted while travelling on high-risk roads.

In the report which has since gone viral, the scheme is alleged to have asked serving corps members to inform their family members and friends before embarking on any road trip as this would enable them to prepare sufficient ransom that may be required if they are abducted.

The NYSC has now denied the report through a post made on its official social media handles. It reads;

The attention of Management of the National Youth Sevice Corps has been drawn to a fake release making the rounds on the social media to the effect that Corps Members travelling on “high risk roads” should alert their families, friends and colleagues in order to have somebody to pay off the ransom that could be demanded in the event of being kidnapped.

Management wishes to emphatically state that the clause quoted is not embedded in NYSC Security Tips pamphlet which was put together by a highly respected retired security expert.

Management wishes to appeal to the general public to always clarify issues with the Scheme.

Please, be wary of falling prey to the antics of mischief makers out to ridicule the Scheme.

Management shall continue to prioritise the security and welfare of Corps Members and staff at all times.

The Police in Abia State has arrested one of its officers identified as Corporal Chinedu Nwachukwu, for allegedly raping a student of the State Polytechnic, in Aba.

Academic activities have been halted at the Polytechnic as students took over the Aba -Owerri road protesting the alleged rape of three students by Policemen attached to the Rapid Response Squad, RRS.

Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Abia State Command, SP Geoffrey Ogbonna, in a statement, expressed regret over the disgraceful act allegedly committed by the policemen.

After visiting the victim at the hospital and obtaining information from her, an investigation was launched which led to the arrest of the suspect. The Commissioner of Police, CP Janet Agbede, being a woman and a mother has been on her toes with other officers in the command to douse the tension and to find out what actually happened.

“The Commissioner of Police and her management team visited and listened to the victim in the hospital. After hearing from the victim, a serious investigation started through which the policeman, Cpl. Nwachukwu Chinedu that committed the barbaric act was arrested but not attached to Rapid Response Squad Aba (RRS) as alleged by the protesters.

The Commissioner of Police appeals to Abia Polytechnic community and the general public to exercise patience and wait for the outcome of Police investigation which is ongoing and would be fast-tracked and made public to ensure justice and actually the law will take its course.” On how the investigation commenced, the statement read;

“On 23 September 2021 at about 0915hrs, the Area Commander of Aba received information that students of Abia State Polytechnic were on protest along with Aba/Owerri Aba.

The Area Commander and his personnel along with other security agencies met the protesters. The students were advised not to carry on with the protest.

The Area Commander met the School Acting Rector, Associate Professor Kalu Osonwa Okorie on the campus.

The Area Commander further advised the students to be peaceful and law-abiding.

He also urged students of the Polytechnic to be law-abiding and peaceful in their protest and avoid a violent confrontation with law enforcement officers.

Heavy gunfire rocks Abia Polytechnic

Meanwhile, students of the polytechnic were said to have insisted on the protest till justice is done on the matter. They also shunned appeals by the management of the institution and the Police to shelve the protest.

Sunday Vanguard gathered that the Police started firing shots to disperse students from the Aba –Owerri road. In the ensuing encounter, many students were injured and motorists deserted the area.

Gov. Ikpeazu decries shooting by some police officers at Abia polytechnic 

Abia State Governor, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu, has condemned the shooting at the Abia State Polytechnic, Aba during a protest by students of the institution.

The Governor in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Onyebuchi Ememanka, noted that the action of the Policemen was uncalled for and could aggravate the tense situation at the institution which could lead to collateral damages.

In his words; “Shooting at unarmed students who were protesting the alleged sexual assault of one of them by a police officer is against all known and recognized rules of engagement by law enforcement officers who could have employed other means other than deadly force to disperse the protesting students.”

While noting that the State Government was already looking into the issues that led to protests which created a huge traffic jam along Aba Owerri Road, the Governor insisted that the use of deadly force by the Police was completely unacceptable to the State Government and out rightly condemnable.

Ikpeazu directed the State Police Commissioner and the Area Commander in charge of Aba to ensure that the policemen who were involved in the shooting are identified and disciplined in line with extant Police regulations, while further ensuring that such display of disproportionate force doesn’t happen again.

The Governor also advised the students to be disciplined and avoid taking the law into their hands even while protesting, adding that they must at all times, exercise restraint when confronted by Police Officers who are on lawful duty.

Ikpeazu further warned that while the State Government will not condone the use of excessive force by Policemen, any student who, under the guise of a protest, chooses to unlawfully confront an armed police officer must be prepared to face the consequences

Under no circumstances must students confront police officers who are engaged in their lawful duties. The Police have a responsibility under the law to ensure that peaceful protests by students are not hijacked by hoodlums whose intentions are different from that of the students.”

An unguarded dog, owned by one Abass Olagunju, a 24-year-old 400-level student of Animal Science in Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, has bitten off a part of the private parts of another student of the school.

It was gathered that the victim had visited a friend at the Vanilla Villa, around the Permanent site, outside the school premises, when the dog, identified as Charlie, attacked him.

The dog reportedly bit the victim’s private parts before some good Samaritans came to his rescue.

The Public Relations Officer of the institution’s Students Union Government, Oluwafemi Adegbeyeni, who confirmed the incident to our correspondent, said the undergraduate was rushed to a nearby hospital.

He said, “From what I gathered, the student went to visit a friend at Vanilla Villa, around the Permanent Site. Maybe knowingly or unknowingly he was bitten by the unguarded dog. The victim was quickly rushed to a hospital for treatment because the dog bit off part of his private parts.

“He is currently being treated and still alive and that is the information I got from people who live in the area. The incident happened in the morning and from what we gathered, the dog has been a threat to people living in that area but we have been warning students to secure their dogs. The incident happened outside the school premises.

A post on Instagram showed when men of the Ondo State Police Command arrested the dog at a hostel where the incident occurred.

Footage attached to the post showed a man tying the dog to a patrol van. The police were later seen taking the dog away in the van.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Funmi Odulami, said the dog bit the upper thigh of the victim, adding that the impact of the attack affected the undergraduate’s scrotum.

She said, “A pit-bull dog known as Charlie, two-year-three-month old, owned by one Abass Olagunju, 24, a 400-level Animal Science student at the Faculty of Agriculture, Adekunle Ajasin University, attacked and bit one Sadiq Opeyemi, 18, 100-level of the same department, at their hostel in Vanilla Villa Permanent Site, Akungba.

Opeyemi Sadiq, who was running to meet the owner of the dog, was attacked by Charlie. The bite affected the skin of his scrotum. He was immediately rushed to Inland Specialist Hospital, Ikare, where he was treated and discharged.”

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has released list of 67 illegal universities in Nigeria.

The Federal Government has banned students in Senior Secondary School one and two from taking from applying for and taking external West African Senior School Certificate Examination, the National Examination Council, and National Business and Technical Examinations Board.

This was contained in a circular issued by the Federal Ministry of Education to principals of federal unity schools.

It was titled In the circular with no: FME/DBSE/US/DOC/III/16 and signed by the ministry’s Director Senior Secondary Education, Hajia Binta Abdulkadir.

The circular was confirmed by the Director of Press and Public Relations, Ben Bem Goong, on Friday.

The government threatened to expel any SSS One and Two students who take the exams.

This, the education ministry, said would help to maintain decorum and boost standards of education in schools.

The circular read, “The ministry’s attention has been drawn to the flagrant disregard to its directive on (the) writing of external examinations such as NABTEB (NTC and NBC), WASSCE, NECO (SSCE) by SS1 and SS2 students.

“Students who are involved in the practice find it difficult to settle down on serious studies. They become unruly and distract other students from achieving their goals.

Any student caught to have written any of the above examinations in SS1 or SS2 classes will be expelled from the college. All students must write these examinations after they have been duly registered for the examination by the college.

“All students of Federal Unity College should adhere strictly to the content of this circular. And Principals are advised to bring the content of this circular to the knowledge of all parents of the college.

The senate of Bayero University, Kano at its 392nd meeting held on Wednesday,22 September, 2021 had approved the extension of the resumption date for the 2021/2022 new academic session to 1st November, 2021.

According to a statement by the Acting Registrar Malanı Jamil Ahmad Salim, said

the decision to extend the resumption date by one month was informed by the desire to accommodate many candidates whose 2021 SSCE results are yet to be release.

The Senate at its 392nd meeting held on Wednesday, 22nd September, 2021 while

reviewing the admission process noted the JAMB Policy which made download of

all candidates ordinary level results (WAEC, NECO and others) mandatory before any institution could propose candidates for admission.

It was also observed that about 90% of the candidates who qualify for admissions by scoring 180 points and above are waiting O’ level results.”

Consequently, the statement added in view of the fact that, the NECO results would be officially released in the first week of October and the hope to give many candidates the chance to qualify for the admission, Senate decided to extend the resumption date by one month to accommodate as many Candidates as possible to reduce the number of drop out.”

The Registrar said the new session (2021/2022) would now commence on

1st November, 2021 while lectures are to start by 8th November, 2021.

The Army assured the general public that it would such such infractions from its personnel.

The Nigeria Army has expressed shocked over the dehumanizing of a serving Corp member in Calabar the State capital.

Director Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Onyemah Nwachukwu, who disclosed this in a statement said the Nigeria Army has taken cognizance of a video clip currently making the rounds on the social media, where a female officer was seen dehumanizing a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Calabar, Cross River State.

According to him, this act is not only condemnable, but unprofessional and against established precepts of discipline in the NA.

“The NA has remained undoubtedly the pride of the nation, a symbol of national unity that has consistently being in the vanguard of respect for the fundamental human rights of the citizenry. It is against this premise that the NA condemns this unimaginable level of infraction by a personnel in its ranks”.

“The NA therefore, condemns in strong terms, this act of gross misconduct. Undoubtedly, the officer’s actions has caused the NA monumental embarrassment and is highly regrettable. This unfortunate act of indiscipline does not in anyway represent the NA and will not be condoned in its entirety”.

The Army spokesman, however, assured the general public that The Nigeria Army would such such infractions from its personnel.

The NA also reassures that the rights of the citizenry is sacrosanct and must be respected by all personnel of the NA, as any form of infraction will be severely dealt with”.

“Therefore, the general public is enjoined to continue to report such infractions, as Human Rights Desks in all formations of the NA are emplaced to deal decisively with such erring personnel”.

The NA further wishes to tender unreserved apology to the victim, her family members, friends, National Youth Service Corps and to Nigerians in general for the unwholesome treatment meted out to the Corps member”, he said.
