STRIKE: FG DARES LECTURERS, SAYS ASUU, GOVT PLEADS

The Federal Government has again appealed to the Academic Staff Union of Universities to exercise patience as the process of implementing its agreement with the union is ongoing.

The Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, stated this in an exclusive interview with our correspondent.

This was as ASUU President accused the Federal Government of constantly daring the union.

CAMPUSINFO Reports had on Wednesday reported that no fewer than three zones of ASUU had asked Nigerians to hold the Federal Government responsible should the university lecturers embark on another strike.

The union accused the government of not implementing the agreement it signed with lecturers in December 2020.

However, ASUU for some weeks now had been urging the government to fulfill all the agreements contained in the Memorandum of Action, which it signed with the union.

But Nwajiuba assured the university teachers that all the agreements ranging from arrears to revitalisation fund would be addressed.

He said, “ASUU should have patience. All the agreements in the Memorandum of Action, from the payment of arrears, salaries to the issue of the revitalisation fund are already in progress.

“I have reached out to the NUC; they are on top of the matter and are working towards it to make sure that everything will be solved. Sooner or later, when they are through, a statement will be issued.

“ASUU should embrace patience and rest assured that the NUC is working fervently to make sure that the issues are resolved.”

But ASUU President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, in a separate interview with The PUNCH accused the Federal Government of daring the union’s members.

Osodeke said, “They are daring us. They want to see what we will do and we know their plans. They want us to look bad in the eyes of the public.

We wrote a memo to them two weeks ago, till now, the memo has not been replied. You don’t reply a union through the press. If you make an agreement with someone, courtesy demands that if you cannot meet the agreement, you notify the parties involved. Why didn’t they communicate?”

But the minister, in another interview advised the union to reach out to the ministry.

He said, “Let them reach out to the ministry so they can be kept abreast on what is going on. They keep on saying they reached out, who did they reach out to?”

UNIVERSITY OF CALABAR TEACHING HOSPITAL PERFORMS FIRST OPEN HEART SURGERY

The University of Calabar Teaching Hospital has successfully performed its first open-heart surgery in the hospital.

The Chief Medical Director/Chief Executive Officer of the hospital, Prof Ikpeme Ikpeme, made this known in a statement titled, “Today we made history…& we move!”

History was made in UCTH on Wednesday 15th September 2021, at 6.43 pm, when the first-ever open heart surgery was performed in our hospital and the patient safely wheeled out to our Intensive Care Unit.

“She had received a Mitral valve replacement following about six and a half hours of surgery. This has been the culmination of two years of hard work, determination, sacrifice, vision and focus at different levels of our hospital. And we must offer sincere gratitude to God and all who worked to make this happen.

It is the guiding principle of this management to work quietly to achieve the vision and mission of our hospital and reposition her appropriately in the comity of tertiary health institutions in Nigeria. We have driven this agenda by focusing steadily on the 3R mantra and refusing to be distracted. We must appreciate all staff who made this happen openly.

According to Ikpeme, the Memorandum of Understanding for Open Heart Surgery Missions was signed with the VOOM Foundation sometime in 2015/16.

He stated that things went quiet until the MoU was reviewed with the Foundation in July/August 2019 and UCTH made a commitment to actualise the programme and domesticate open heart surgery in the hospital.

He said, “After two years of sacrificial hard work, doggedness, critical planning and determination against many odds, here we are today. We have had to construct a new Theatre Suite using in-house engineering and technical teams. We had to create a multidisciplinary Heart Surgery Team; we had to clear 2Nos 40ft containers from Onne Port, Port Harcourt and invest in equipment worth millions of Naira (Heart-Lung machine, Heater-Cooler interexchanger system, Cell savers, High-end Anaesthetic Machine, high-end monitors, Defibrillator with Internal pads, Ventilators, digital mobile X-ray system, etc). Hours of work went into this project.”

Ikpeme stated that the hospital was offering those surgeries at 30 per cent of their actual cost.

“Our commitment is that as we resuscitate basic services; we will strive to introduce higher-end services that will define our existence as a tertiary centre and contribute to the well-being of our people and community,” he added.
