With the removal of Prof Oluwatoyin Ogundipe as Vice-Chancellor, University of Lagos, the governing council has appointed Prof Omololu Soyombo as acting vice-chancellor.

Registrar of UNILAG, Oladejo Azeez, in a statement also confirmed that Ogundipe was lawfully removed as vice-chancellor at an emergency meeting held on Wednesday, August 12, 2020.

Details of the public statement titled “RE NOTICE TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC ON THE REMOVAL

OF THE VICE CHANCELLOR, UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS, AKOKA-LAGOS” reads:

“My attention has been drawn to a document circulating under the hand and Signature of the former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos. ProfessorOluwatoyin T Ogundipe, FAS The letter purports to deny his removal by the Governing Council of University at its Emergency Meeting of Wednesday, August 12, 2020

“For the avoidance of doubt, in my capacity as Registrar and Secretary to Council the only custodian of the minutes of Council and the authorising officer on behalf of Council to issue official statements pertaining to all Council Affairs.

“Members of the public are hereby advised to totally disregard the statement attributed to the said former Vice-Chancellor.

“The position remains that he was lawfully removed by the Governing Council at a meeting fully attended by all council members.

“I also wish to use the opportunity to inform members of the public that Council at the said meeting duly appointed Professor Theophilus Omalolu Soyombo of The Faculty of Social Sciences, the University of Lagos as Vice-Chancellor of the University in an acting capacity.”

Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, vice chancellor of the University of Lagos, has asked the public to ignore the announcement of his removal from office.

Earlier on Wednesday, Ogundipe’s removal was announced during a meeting of the varsity’s governing council which was presided over by Wale Babalakin, pro-chancellor and chairman of the council.

The meeting held at the National Universities Commission (NUC) headquarters in Abuja.

However, in response to the announcement via a statement on Wednesday, Ogundipe described it as untrue.

“The attention of the University of Lagos management has been drawn to the ‘Notice to the General Public on the Removal of the Vice Chancellor, University of Lagos’ dated August 12, 2020 and signed by Oladejo Azeez, Esq, Registrar and Secretary to Council, stating that the current Vice Chancellor, Professor Oluwatoyin T. Ogundipe, FAS has been removed from office with immediate effect,” the statement read.

“The purported removal is an illegality and cannot stand as it is in clear violation of the University of Lagos Act, as amended.

“Assuming without conceding, that the purported removal is true, the extant provisions of the law have not been complied with.

“For with the avoidance of doubt, the University Act states that: ‘if it appears to the Council that there are reasons for believing that the Vice Chancellor… should be removed from his office… on the grounds of misconduct or inability to perform the functions of his office… the Council shall… a. Give notice of those reasons to the person in question; b. Make arrangements: For a joint committee of the Council and the Senate to investigate the matter where it relates to the Vice Chancellor… and to report on it to the Council….

“Therefore, stakeholders of UNILAG and the general public are advised to disregard this mischievous disinformation about the sitting Vice Chancellor of UNILAG. Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, FAS still remains the Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos.”

The Governing Council of the University of Lagos has announced the removal of Professor Toyin Ogundipe, as the Vice-Chancellor of the University.

This was revealed on Wednesday in a statement by the Registrar and Secretary to the Council, Oladele Azeez.

The statement reads: “The General Public is hereby notified that at an emergency meeting held on Wednesday, August 12, and In accordance with the statutory powers vested in it by Law, the Governing Council at the University of Lagos removed Professor Oluwatoyin T. Ogundipe, from office as Vice-Chancellor of the University with immediate effect

This decision was based on the Council’s investigation of serious acts of wrongdoing, gross misconduct, financial recklessness and abuse of office against Professor Oluwatoyin T. Ogundipe.”

Earlier, The Chairman, University of Lagos chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Dr Dele Ashiru, had said the Governing Council of the institution did not have power to sack the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Toyin Ogundipe, following speculations that the council may take drastic action against the VC during its meeting in Abuja on Wednesday.

Ashiru, while reacting to some online reports that the Council would sack Ogundipe, said such reports remained speculative.

“We are following the development. We are aware that the Council relocated to Abuja to meet. The Council does not have the constitutional powers to sack the Vice-Chancellor. We will react appropriately when things become clear,” he said.

It would be recalled that Ogundipe and the Council Chairman, Dr. Wale Babalakin, SAN, have been engaged in a runnig battle over the management of the institution and some decisions taken in the process.

Their disagreement led to the suspension of this year’s convocation ceremony of the university in March. Consequently, ASUU held a Congress where Babalakin was declared unwelcomed on campus.

The last time the council wanted to hold its meeting on campus, ASUU also fixed a Congress for the same date, prompting the council to postpone its meeting, and later moved it to Abuja where it held on Wednesday.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibadan Zonal Office, on Tuesday, August 11, 2020, arrested 32 “Yahoo boys” for alleged involvement in internet fraud.

The suspects were apprehended during a raid on their hideout in Ogbomoso, Oyo State. Officers of the EFCC swept on the location, after diligent analysis of series of intelligence gathered on their alleged criminal activities.

Three of the suspects claimed to be serving members of the National Youth Service Corps ( NYSC), 19 were undergraduates of various universities across the country, while the remaining 10 laid claim to sundry vocations.

The suspects are Oyebamiji Francis; Aremo Jeremiah; Ogbonnaya Prosper John; Anuoluwapo Matthew; Oladele Victor; Mumuni Waliyullah; Olawoyin Abiodun; Okuwatoyin Henry; Arisekola Shina; Babarinde Solomon; Samson Gideon; Joshua Ola Adebayo; Ajayi Joseph Ajibola; Garba Mojeed, Olatunbosun Tobiloba and Azeez Ridwan.

Others are Ajala Timilehin; Adebolapo Bakare; Alaba Gideon; Ogunkeye Olumide; Ogunleke Tolu; Olapade Emmanuel; Adegoke Aanu Abiodun; Job Ayantoye; Oyebode Pelumi; Babayanju Toluwani; Oladele Ayobami; Omonaiye Abubakar; Sattong Baking; Abisoye Kehinde, Iwajomo Nathan and Aniyikaye Tope.

At the point of their arrest, 12 exotic cars, several phones, laptops and some incriminating documents were recovered from them.

The suspects were subjected to thorough screening by medical officials of the EFCC, in line with the Covid-19 prevention protocols.

They would be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.

The National Examinations Council (NECO) on Tuesday released the timetable and guidelines for the conduct of its 2020 examinations for Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination for students in exit class.

Professor Godswill Obioma, Registrar of NECO announced the release of the timetable at a press briefing at the Council’s Headquarters in Minna, Niger State.

He explained that the council is exploring the possibility of installing CCTV cameras in all its examination centres and custodian points.

According to Obioma, NECO SSCE would begin on October 5 and end on November 18.2020.

He added that NECO Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) will hold between Monday, August 24 and September 4, while the National Common Entrance Examination for Junior Secondary School into the Federal Unity Colleges would hold on October 17.

The registrar added that NECO examination officials would be made to sign an oath of allegiance as a requirement to participate in their respective roles and responsibilities.

“Student and pupils preparing to sit for our examinations are advised to study very hard and avoid the temptation of wanting to cheat during the examination as the council has zero-tolerance for examination malpractice.

The announcement comes two weeks after the Federal Government released a comprehensive schedule for various national examinations for exit classes including Junior Secondary School (JSS) 3 and Senior Secondary School (SSS) 3.

Chukwuemeka Nwajuiba, the Minister of State for Education, who made the announcement on July 29 in Abuja after a series of meetings with chief executives of examination bodies in the country, revealed that NECO examination will start on October 5 and end on November 18.

According to him, the National Business and Technical Examination Board (NABTEB) examinations will start on September 21 and end on October 15.

“Other details of the schedule indicate that the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examinations, for SS3, conducted by NECO will start on October 5 and end on November 18, 2020,” he said.

He explained that the Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE) for JSS 3 students, also conducted by NECO, will start on August 24 and end on September 4.
