National Universities Commission (NUC) has began the collection of data to assess the readiness of all universities for a possible resumption date for academic activities amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Executive secretary of the Commission, Abubakar Adamu Rasheed disclosed this Tuesday in Abuja while briefing newsmen on the ongoing contributions of Nigerian universities to national response to COVID-19.

Represented by deputy executive secretary, Academics, Dr Suleiman Ramon Yusuf, the NUC boss stated that efforts are also ongoing in finding solution to Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike and reopening of universities.

He noted that the Commission is already working with universities in terms of what kind of preparation should be put in place before reopening, adding that once that is done universities not under ASUU watch can go back to classes.

He said; “We have a template to vice Chancellors of all universities requesting them to suggest to us what kind of protocols and strategies are they putting in place in the various institutions. We are collecting some of the responses which have already started coming in and at the end of the day the picture should emerge about the extent to which our universities are prepared to reopen for academic activities.”

Speaking on the various contributions being made by Nigerian universities, Rasheed said over thirty two Universities in the country have so far involved in researches that are aimed at mitigating the COVID-19 pandemic.

He stated that a compendium put together by the Commission showed Nigerian universities are making contribution, stressing that University of Jos which is leading in herbal and natural product development could do more if federal government release more funds to such institutions for research purposes.

According to him, “As in many other parts of the world, the pandemic has challenged our knowledge system, which has proved inadequate and insufficiently robust enough to respond to the challenges. Only few institutions have been able to utilize open and distance learning system to keep students engaged while the pandemic lasted and only few laboratories continued with research and development activities.

“Nonetheless, the few who engaged in research and innovation work have demonstrated the need for a well-funded and robustly organized national research and innovation system to catalyse the national response.

“The performance of the African Centers of Excellence, particularly the Center for the Genomics of Infectious Diseases at the Redeemer’s University, Ede in Sequencing SARS-CoV-2 virus, the collaborative development of vaccines with the University of Cambridge and as a pioneer national testing and screening centre and the other ACES in ABU, BUK, UNILAG, UNIBEN, UNIPORT and UNIJOS that also served as national testing and screening centres have proved that world-class Research and Development work is possible in Nigeria.

“Furthermore, they demonstrate how the Nigerian University System can be readily effective and relevant to national development if research is valued and adequately funded and the institutions provided with resources to motivate researchers and innovators, including students,” he added.

The Presidential Task Force on COVID – 19 has asked students with symptoms of COVID – 19 to stay at home as resumption of the Senior Secondary School 3 begins this week nationwide.

The PTF faulted state governments asking students to produce results of their COVID -19 tests before resumption .
It said instead of compulsory test , which would only be valid for the period the test was conducted , students already showing symptoms of the virus should be asked to stay away .

The task force ’s national coordinator , Dr Sani Aliyu, said these at the PTF press briefing in Abuja .

In preparation for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination , the SSS 3 students in Ogun and Benue would resume today, while their counterparts in Kano and Ekiti will resume on August 10 .

Before it made a U -turn on Monday , the Ogun State Government had last week asked all boarding students to go for a compulsory COVID -19 test .

Parents, whose children are in private schools , on Sunday protested against the N 25 , 000, which their children were asked to pay for the test .

But Aliyu while responding to a question on the issue pointed out that the status of somebody could only be confirmed as of the time the test was conducted .

He said, “ It is only valid for that period of time ; for that point in time when you had the swab taken . The next day , you could have a positive result , especially if you are in an incubation period.

“ It is far more important to monitor for symptoms and check for temperature, and make sure that students that have symptoms of cough or any other respiratory symptoms are told to stay back at home and seek medical attention.

“ This is far more useful than doing COVID – 19 test before they resume . It is safer as well to monitor the students rather than test them at a particular point in time .”

Aliyu also announced that the PTF would on Thursday release new protocols in the next phase of efforts to curtail further spread of coronavirus in the country .

“ I will like to also remind us all of the safety guidelines for the eased lockdown phase two, which we are currently in and this will continue to be in place until Thursday , August 6 , when we will announce a new protocol for the third phase .”

Aliyu also noted that more countries were recording a second wave of the pandemic, forcing them back into lockdown .

He said, “ The PTF will like to appeal to state governments and religious bodies to proactively prevent transmission of the virus by continuing to advocate and practise the approved preventive measures and guidelines . Specifically , we urge businesses that are reopening to align themselves to our efforts by establishing and practising COVID -sensitive business precautionary measures .”

Corroborating Aliyu, the Chairman of the task force, Boss Mustapha , said the new protocols would be released during the next briefing of the task force on Thursday after its sixth interim report must have been submitted to the President , Major General Muhammadu Buhari ( retd. ) .

“ As mentioned during our last press briefing of Monday July 27 , 2020 , the PTF will submit its sixth interim report to Mr President and subject to his approval , we hope to present the way forward to Nigerians at the next briefing on Thursday , August 6 , 2020 ,” Mustapha said.

For Nigerians who still harbour scepticism about the existence and the danger posed by the virus , the Secretary to the Government of the Federation urged all to imbibe a change of behaviour by complying with the non -pharmaceutical measures prescribed .

The Nigerian government spent about N523.3 million on school feeding programme during the lockdown against the coronavirus pandemic.

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development (MHADMSD), Sadiya Farouq, announced this at the Presidential Task Force briefing on COVID-19 on Monday in Abuja.

Farouk made the revelation against the rumours and speculations surrounding the Home Grown School Feeding Programme.

She said that the programme was modified and implemented in three states following a March 29 presidential directive.

“It is critical at this juncture to provide details that will help puncture the tissue of lies being peddled in the public space.

“The provision of ‘Take Home Rations’, under the modified Home Grown School Feeding programme, was not a sole initiative of the MHADMSD.

“The ministry, in obeying the presidential directive, went into consultations with state governments through the state Governor’s Forum, following which it was resolved that ‘take-home rations remained the most viable option for feeding children during the lockdown.

“So, it was a joint resolution of the ministry and the state governments to give out take-home rations.

“The stakeholders also resolved that we would start with the FCT, Lagos and Ogun states, as pilot cases,” the minister said.

According to her, each take home ration was valued at N4,200 and that the figure was arrived at with proper consultation.

The minister said the figure was generated from statistics provided by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) and the Central bank of Nigeria (CBN)

“According to statistics from the NBS and CBN, a typical household in Nigeria has 5.6 to six members in its household, with three to four dependents.

“So, each household is assumed to have three children.

“Based on the original design of the Home Grown School Feeding Programme, long before it was domiciled in the ministry, every child on the programme receives a meal a day.

“The meal costs N70 per child.

“When you take 20 school days per month, it means a child eats food worth N1,400 per month.

“Three children would then eat food worth N4,200 per month, and that was how we arrived at the cost of the ‘take-home ration’.

“The agreement was that the federal government would provide the funding while the states would implement it.

“To ensure transparency in the process, we partnered with the World Food Programme (WFP) as technical partners.”

She said that her ministry invited government agencies like the EFCC, CCB, ICPC, DSS and some NGOs to monitor the process.

“TrackaNG monitored and gave daily updates validating the programme.

“In the FCT, 29,609 households were impacted, 37,589 homes in Lagos and 60,391 in Ogun, making a total of 124,589 families affected between May 14, and July 6.

“If 124,589 households received take-home rations valued at N4,200, the amount will be N523,273,800.

A 300 Level student of the Faculty of Law, University of Ilorin, Miss Famuyiwa Olushola, has won the maiden edition of the International Bar Association (IBA) Vlogging Competition.

According to the University of Ilorin Bulletin issued on Monday, Olushola’s award letter, written by Anna Toth, the Divisions Administrative Assistant at IBA headquarters in London, United Kingdom, informed her of being selected as the winner of the IBA Vlogging Competition in the law student category.

The publication said the; “IBA introduced the first ever vlogging competition for young lawyers and law students, looking for their input, thoughts and opinions on COVID-19 and the law.

“It received many impressive videos from all over the world which were all assessed based on topic, quality and professionalism”.

The award letter, dated July 28, 2020, outlined the details of the award to include two years’ free student membership with the IBA, waived registration for either the Law Student Conference or a Young Lawyer Training Day, taking place in 2021.

Others include round trip economy airfare to attend the selected event and accommodation at conference hotel for the selected event.

In her reaction, Famuyiwa, expressed happiness over the award, describing it as a great impetus for her to work harder towards making a great career in the legal profession after her graduation and call to Bar. (NAN)

The Minister of State for Education, Emeka Nwajiuba, has disclosed that the Federal Government would embark on an assessment tour of all Unity schools in the country as students in exit classes resume on Tuesday for academic activities.

In a statement issued on by the Director of Press and Public Relations in the Federal Ministry of Education, Ben Bem Goong, Nwajiuba was quoted as saying this during an online meeting with the 36 State Commissioners of Education.

The statement read, “Ahead of August 4 2020, the Minister of State for Education, Hon. Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba has announced that all the 104 Unity Colleges are ready to open their gates to exit classes tomorrow.

“Announcing the preparedness of the Unity Colleges at a meeting with Honourable Commissioners of Education of the 36 States of the Federation this (Monday) morning via the Zoom platform, the Minister lauded Principals of Unity Colleges for the comprehensive preparation put in place for resumption.

“Across states, Honourable Commissioners reported varying degrees of preparation and readiness for reopening between August 4 and 10 for virtually all schools within their jurisdictions.

“From today (Monday), the Honourable Minister of State for Education, Permanent Secretary and Directors will embark on an assessment tour of all Unity Colleges to ascertain and confirm the reports they have received from the Principals of Unity Colleges.

“Similarly, Federal Education Quality Assurance Directors deployed to the States have been directed to monitor compliance in their respective states. Honourable Commissioners from the States were enjoined to embark on assessment tours in their jurisdictions to ascertain the level of preparations for reopening.

“While most schools will reopen tomorrow (Tuesday), others will continue to fine-tune their preparations in the coming days for reopening. Education Minister, Hon. Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, is asking all schools to communicate their specific reopening dates to their parents and students in order to avoid chaos in the system.

“All returning students are to undergo temperature checks among other protocols before being admitted into their schools.”

The Federal Government on Monday announced the reopening of the 104 unity colleges for SS3 students to undertake revision ahead of the 2020 West African Senior School Certificate Examination slated for August 17.

The government directed all the colleges open from Tuesday to pupils.

1. The admission screening is open to candidates who chose YABATECH as their 1st or 2nd Choice of Institution and scored 150 and above for National Diploma (ND) Full Time and 180 for B. Sc. Degree (100 Level) in affiliation with University of Nigeria, Nsukka in the 2020/2021 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
2. However, all candidates who have chosen Yabatech as 2nd Choice of Institution are required to change to First Choice on the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Portal on or before Saturday, August 31, 2020 to be eligible for admission.
