The minister, who spoke during the Presidential Taskforce on COVID-19 briefing in Abuja, expressed satisfaction with the level of compliance with virus prevention protocol by schools that have resumed for exit classes.

He said the government was continuing with its engagement with private school teachers to access the N100 billion Central Bank of Nigeria credit support intervention for the healthcare industry.

He said the government had forwarded the requests that they made to the CBN and Ministry of Trade, Industry and Investment, adding, “For us, they are part of the provision the Federal Government has made in relation to SMEs.”

The minister, however, said some pupils ignore the protocols, once they get out of class, they come together, hug each other, playing. “There is no way around that. It is almost very difficult,” he said.

Also speaking during the PTF briefing, the Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, urged Nigerians to comply strictly with the COVID-19 safety protocols, such as the appropriate use of facemasks, maintaining social distancing and practising hand hygiene.

Following the resumption of schools, Grace High School has refused to open hostels for candidates preparing for the forthcoming West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) advising them to lodge in hotels to meet up with the timing of the exam.

The members of the Parents Teachers Association (PTA) protested against the school directives, and also refused to sign an indemnity if they want their children to resume.

Speaking on the WASSCE candidates’ dilemma, one of the aggrieved parents, who simply identified herself as Mrs. Ada, also accused the school of asking them to sign an “indemnity if we want our children to resume, and we were wondering why that was necessary.

“We are SS3 students’ parents, and our children, WASSCE candidates, have been here for six years. The school was supposed to resume on August 4.

“We have a platform where we have been asking Grace School management their plans for SSS3, when the government came out with the school resumption plans. But they didn’t tell us anything.

“The Friday before August 4, they called for a PTA meeting via online and asked us to sign an indemnity if we want our children to resume, and we were wondering why that was necessary.

“Because the government didn’t say we should sign any indemnity. The government only asked that the school should put certain things in place for schools to resume.

“They now came back and said they are not opening the hostel facility. This is a school that has children from all over Lagos; considering the fact that 3rd Mainland and Eko bridges are blocked.

“The school refused to resume on August 4, as other schools did. They have taken a week away from revision, and they are just resuming today (Monday), and these children have Maths for their WAEC on August 17.

“And they said the school would only operate between 9am and 12 noon. So just three hours of school.

“So parents of WASSCE candidates will leave their work and come and drop these children by 9am; I don’t know how they expect the children to go home. So on the platform, we were complaining that we need to have access to the hostel because that is part of our contract with them. And the Vice Principal, Mr. Balogun, had the effrontery to tell us to take our children to hotels in Gbagada, that if we cannot bring our children, that they cannot open their hostels.

“So we came here to even ask to see what they have in place since they can’t accommodate our children. But they said no, and kept us outside since 6:30am.”

The parents also accused the school of calling armed mobile policemen on them to disallow them from gaining entrance into the school premises.

Expressing frustration over issue, the PTA Chairman, Engr. Matin Etta, said: “They did one meeting last week Friday and wanted to open the school next week (August 17), same day WASSCE candidates would start exams.

“But we kicked against that and suggested they open today (Monday), before they reasoned with us, giving the psychological burden.

“On the issue of boarding, for some people, boarding is the first checklist of deciding to take their children to school.

“There are many parents who wouldn’t have come to Grace High School if there were no boarding house.

“So I said to them, to please consider opening it, based on the distance between where children live and school. But they refused.

“I even called the administrator yesterday (Sunday) and he said they didn’t get the approval to open boarding. I know schools not up to Grace High School’s standard that have opened boarding.

“The second thing they can do if they don’t want to open the boarding house, is to call parents together, and plead with parents that live closer to accommodate children that live far.

“The school can exploit this avenue instead of telling us to go and lodge my 13 years old child in a hotel in this age and time, where sexual crimes are everywhere. There are some things that should not be said. It is wrong.”

The parents later dispersed one after the other after several hours of waiting for the school management to address them, to no avail.

Efforts to get the school’s reaction on the allegations over WASSCE candidates by the parents proved abortive. However, the school Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ayodeji Ayopo, said he was going to get back to back with a reaction, which he had not done at press time.

However, the Lagos State Ministry of Education said it has commenced investigation into the case. The Head, Public Affairs in the ministry, Mr Kayode Abayomi, disclosed this in response to enquiries on the development on Tuesday.

This is to inform all UTME and Direct Entry candidates who applied for admission to Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, for the 2020/2021 academic session that registration for Post UTME Admission Screening Exercise will commence from Wednesday, 12^TH August, 2020.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says the post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (post-UTME) screening for the 2020 admission processes will now begin not earlier than 7 September, 2020 in universities, polytechnics and colleges of education in the country.

The board said the shift in the date of the admission process from the earlier announced 21 August, is to accommodate candidates who will be taking part in this year’s school-based Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE).

Registrar of JAMB, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, made this known on Monday after a consultative virtual meeting with vice chancellors, rectors, and provosts of tertiary education institutions.

“The view of JAMB is that while we go on consulting at a point when it becomes necessary for decision, we should all come together and take decision.  Presently as you are aware, WAEC starts the Senior School Certificate Examination on 17 August, it will go on till 7th of September.

“Similarly, on the 21 of September or thereabout, NABTEB will commence its own examination that will go on till on the 15 of October, and immediately after that, NECO starts on the 5th and will hold till 18 of November.

“Rather than making candidates run, particularly, when they will have to write their school certificate exam in different towns and rush to  university elsewhere for post-UTME, like somebody rushing from Sokoto to Ibadan t for post-UTME, we believe as a custodian of the highest sector of the education system, we should avoid that,” Oloyede said.

The JAMB boss said institutions whose post-UTME screening is mandatory for candidates would have to spread such exercise in two phases.

He said, “For those (institutions) who want to take post-UTME, that cannot be earlier than the 7th of September and it will be held twice- 7 September to 4 October, and then it will be held for the second time on the  18 November to mop up those who are taking their school certificate examination.”

Oloyede, who commended the various submissions of heads of tertiary institutions during the meeting, said  institutions that conduct admissions without the administration of any-post UTME screening should also ensure  candidates whose SSCE results will be released towards the end of the year are not denied participation in the admission exercise.

The JAMB’s registrar also revealed that the Board has withheld results of candidates that sat for this year’s UTME at Correctional Service centres (prisons) over suspected infractions.

“There are candidates who took exams in the prison yard that  we know are not prisoners, so we wrote to the correctional centres to explain how that happens, because we didn’t want non-prisoners to take advantage of the concessions we give to inmates,” Oloyede said.

The virtual meeting which attracted  488 participants from across all states in the country, was also attended by JAMB’s Director of Administration, Aliyu Muhammed; Director of Finance, Muktar Bello; Director of Information Communication Technology, Fabian Okoro, Director of Information, Dr Fabian Benjamin, among others.

Seyi Makinde, Oyo governor, has approved the sum of N500,000 as a bursary for every indigene of the state at the Nigerian Law School.

Makinde announced his decision on Tuesday saying his administration will give priority to education

The governor said he made the commitment when representatives of Oyo state indigenes at the Nigerian Law School paid him a visit.

Makinde said that his decision was aimed at encouraging the students and assisting them to achieve greatness in their academic pursuit.

He urged the students to return home and contribute their quota towards the development of the state after their studies and not be lured by other cities.

“Representatives of Oyo State indigenes at the Nigerian Law School visited me today. I approved the sum of N500,000 to be paid as bursary to each Oyo State indigene at the Law School,” Makinde wrote.

“Our administration will continue to prioritise education as the foundation upon which sustainable development will be built.”

Upon inauguration as governor of the state, Makinde scrapped levies charged in public schools across the state saying: “We want enrollments to go up, we want our children off the streets and in the classrooms. We are throwing the school doors wide open”.

The Lagos State Government has directed Junior Secondary School (JSS) 3 students, who are registered for National Examination Council (NECO), Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) to resume on Monday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that an earlier pronouncement issued by the state had directed SS3 and Technical Studies (TEC3) Students to resume on August 3, to enable them revise and sit for their forthcoming West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and NABTEB.

The Commissioner for Education, Folashade Adefisayo, said only those students who are registered for NEC, BECE scheduled to begin on August 24, are permitted to resume.

Mrs Adefisayo also said that other JSS 3 students waiting to write BECE organised by the Lagos State Examinations Board would soon be informed of the scheduled dates of their examination.

The commissioner said that administrators of both public and private schools are expected to ensure full compliance with the COVID-19 guidelines for schools re-opening in their respective schools.

She said that the State Government’s officials will be on ground to monitor situations in all schools across the State.

Mrs Adefisayo encouraged students to be fully prepared for the forthcoming examinations and devote more time to their studies.

She urged students and members of staff to adhere strictly to proper hygienic guidelines and ensure the provision of sanitizer, wash hand basin, thermometers.

The commissioner said other essential items in public and private schools across the State, stressing that the washing of hands, wearing of face masks and the maintenance of social distancing must be adhered.
