The National Association of Nigeria Student (NANS) has urged the Nigerian government to reopen schools so that young people in the country can be engaged in reading and learning rather than staying idle at home

The student body in a statement signed by Kazeem Olalekan Israel, the spokesman, said ,the reason why the government are yet to reopen schools is because of its refusal to fund education which is detrimental to the student and citizen

The statement reads, “It is on record that as an association, we have been calling on the government at all levels to properly fund the educational sector.

“As an association, we are disturbed that the Federal Government is not ready to stop putting the brunt of their failure and incompetence on the people which is evident in the guidelines that were issued in line with school reopening.

“Considering the guidelines and the reality that is on the ground today in Nigeria, one cannot but feel embarrassed with the conduct of a government that has been feeding on deceit since inception and this is not unconnected from the fact that there is no educational institution in the country today that can meet the guidelines. The reason cannot be far-fetched; the government’s failure to invest in education.”

It added, “Government at all level should pay serious attention to the educational sector by properly funding it.

“Academic activities whether virtually or physically should commence in our educational institutions with immediate effect.

“As a pre-condition to commencement of classes, government should liaise with ASUU, ASUP, COEASU and NANS as regards what must be put in place for the commencement of classes. Government must liaise with National Universities Commission, National Board for Technical Education and the Universal Basic Education Board including the Post-Primary Schools Board and all relevant academic bodies to make sure the session/semester is streamlined in order to make up for the lost time due to the lockdown.

“Government must provide a waiver for all Nigerian students (tertiary, secondary and primary) in the form of scholarship for a session or slash the fees payable by 60%/70%. This would help cushion the effects of the lockdown on parents that lost their jobs and means of livelihood and businesses. It would also serve as a palliative for students whose parents/guardians means of livelihood have been cut-short as a result of the lockdown.

“TETFUND should consider funding of selected students across all tertiary institutions in the country with innovative ideas just the way lecturers are being sponsored for conferences/symposia.

“The Federal Government should heed to the call of the House of Representatives by setting up a N15bn COVID-19 Emergency Fund for Tertiary Institutions.

“Nigerian students should be prepared to mount pressure on the government to meet our demands towards school reopening as anything other than this shall not be accepted”.

Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma has adopted Joseph Oluomachi Opara, the sensational young boy whose video went viral few days ago.

Joseph, a boy who was just hawking coconut in Imo State caught the attention of many on social media when a video of him singing with his extraordinary voice went viral.

Reacting to the viral video, Governor Uzodinma in a statement on his social media page announced his intentions to adopt Joseph as his own child and sponsor him from primary school until he becomes a Catholic priest, which happens to be the boy’s carrier choice

Uzodinma statement reads:

“In celebration of #fathersday , I directed that little 9 year old Master Joseph Oluomachi Opara, the viral Imo State-born singer be contacted as I announce my intentions to adopt him as my own child and to undertake, personally, to sponsor him from primary school level (his current educational level) to Catholic priesthood (his career choice). Master Opara made waves in the internet at the weekend with videos of his unique rendition of some catholic hymns/songs which marked him out as a specially talented kid singer. This attracted instant applause and commendations from the public.

“I believe in harnessing skills and talents and grooming them to be of better use to mankind and to this end, I directed that the family, through the Imo State commissioner for information, Hon. Declan Emelumba be informed of my intention to adopt their son as my own child and to personally take over the full responsibility of his training until he becomes a Reverend Father, which he said is his life ambition.

It my expectation and prayer that little Oluoma attains his full potentials in God’s time.

God bless Imo State.”

At least seven universities used their institutions portal to violate the admission process in the 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has said.

The board said the seven institutions “were warehousing candidates into institutions’ portals”.

Warehousing means when the candidate’s name is not on the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) but the institution still goes ahead to admit them through its web portal.

The institutions include Adekunle Ajasin University, University of Nigeria, Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, University of Ibadan, Air Force Institute of Technology, Ahmadu Bello University, and Nigeria Police Academy.
CAPS
The board which is a regulatory body has mandated that all admission process should be done on the CAPS.

CAPS is a platform created to ensure quality control, transparency, and credibility of the admission process.

CAPS is expected to make provision for a ‘market place’ in the JAMB portal where institutions can go and “request for students in Nigeria who scored above their cut off points.”

The system is such that institutions can only admit those who meet their cut off points. If a candidate fails to meet the cut-off mark that student would certainly be denied admission irrespective of the candidate’s connection.

In JAMB’s 2020 policy meeting document seen by PREMIUM TIMES, the board said appropriate caution was given to the institutions to desist from such illegitimate actions.

“Any such act will henceforth be visited with appropriate sanctions and the board shall continue to protect the rights of all candidates to be given their due irrespective of their social status,” the board said.
According to the regulatory agency, “these tricks which are meant to usurp the rights of the candidates are improper and should be discontinued”.

“All institutions employing such tricks are putting into jeopardy the future of the illegitimately favoured and less qualified candidates as the board will not condone or regularised such admissions,” the board said.
VIOLATIONS

Adekunle Ajasin University
The document cited an example of Adamolekun Bernice who applied to study Law with 280 marks to the University of Benin but was later offered Law at Adekunle Ajasin University.

“A candidate not available at all in CAPS under AAUA but now offered admission and acceptance fee paid before the protest and cannot be properly admitted into AAUA,” the board said.

University of Nigeria

The document also showed that the University of Nigeria has a quota of 200 to admit students to study Medicine.
“After admitting 106 on CAPS, the University of Nigeria released an additional 448 names on the university’s portal whereas there are 342 qualified unadmitted on CAPS,” the board said.
Also for Law, JAMB said the university violated the admission process.
“The quota for Law is 250. The university admitted 125 on CAPS. The university then released another 240 on their portal,” the board said

Moshood Abiola Polytechnic

The board said the institution did not admit a single candidate on CAPS.
“MAPOLY admitted over 10,795 and went on to receive acceptance fee from 5,950 candidates not yet proposed to JAMB. MAPOLY also claimed its quota is 12,587,” the board said.

University of Ibadan

The board said a candidate, Sanni Abdul Rahman, who applied to the University of Ibadan got Economics on CAPS “but changed to Adult Education on the university portal”.
The regulatory body also complained that another candidate who applied for human nutrition and scored 242 in UTME, 72 in Post-UTME with an aggregate score of 66.25 was transferred to study agricultural extension.
“University then admitted people below her into Human Nutrition,” JAMB said.

Airforce Institute of Technology

The board also said a candidate, Musa Ishaq, who applied for Cybersecurity was moved to Physics on the school portal.
“He innocently changed his programme to Physics whereas he is qualified for Cybersecurity,” JAMB said.
Ahmadu Bello University

The board said a candidate, Thomas Goodness Shekwobyalo, who scored 302 and was qualified to study Medicine claimed: “to be persuaded to change to Anatomy on the university portal”.
The board, however, said the university refuted the claim.
Nigeria Police Academy
The board said the Nigeria Police Academy “changed the programme of candidates through the academy portal without the consent of the candidates”.

The board also said the institution admitted candidates “who were already admitted genuinely into other institutions through CAPS and could not upload them on CAPS again”.

Every year, millions of students seeking admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions write JAMB-conducted tests.
The candidates complete four subjects, with the English Language compulsory for all applicants.

The remaining three subjects depend on the courses respective candidates apply to study. Scores for the four subjects are marked to 400 aggregate.
The score will determine if the candidate is qualified to get admission into a university of choice.

OKEKUNLE SUNDAY, IBADAN.

On Saturday, there were 661 new cases, pushing the total cases to 19, 808, while there were 19 new deaths, pushing the total deaths to 506, while 6, 718 patients have so far been discharged.

Meanwhile, the Bauch with the rising number of COVID – 19 cases, Lagos and Kwara state governments have announced plans to convert their Hajj and pilgrims’ camps to isolation centres to ease the burden on hospital facilities and the limited number of bed spaces.

In Kano State, the state Commissioner for Education, Alhaji Muhammadu Kiru, said the government did not earmark any school for isolation centre but it had inaugurated two more testing centres as part of efforts to intensify COVID -19 testing in the state.

Kiru said in a release that the two testing centres were inaugurated by the state Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, on Independence Road, Bompai, Kano, on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the Bauchi State Commissioner for Education, Tilde, said the state government had set aside the Government Girls College, Bauchi, and the Government Secondary School, Azare, as isolation centres

He said, “ When the Commissioner for Health and his team met with me, we suggested to them some of the schools that we have here in Bauchi and in Azare, Katagum Local Government Area.

The schools are Government Girls College, Bauchi,In Azare , we have Government College, Azare , or Government Secondary School, Azare .”

In Oyo, the state government said rather than convert schools to isolation centres, it planned to partner hotels to be converted into isolation centres.

The Chief Press Secretary to Governor Seyi Makinde , Mr Taiwo Adisa, said, “ We are not converting schools into isolation centres in Oyo State.

What we are doing is to partner hotels and other well- meaning persons to raise capacity.

“ Some medical centres are also in the cards to serve as isolation centres.

Officially, the state has isolation /observatory centres in Ogbomoso , Awe, and Igbo – Ora with treatment centres at the Infectious Disease Centre, Olodo , Ibadan; Agbami Chest Hospital, Jericho , Ibadan; and Saki. ”

In Kwara State, the Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Hajia Fatimah Ahmed, said had no plan yet to use public school dormitories as isolation centres but it had prepared 600 bed spaces in its state pilgrims ’ camp in Ilorin, the state capital.

She said, “ We have no such plan to use our public school dormitories as isolation centres for the treatment of COVID -19 patients and the Federal Government has not made such request from the state government . So, we don’ t have such a plan. ”

The Chief Press Secretary to the state governor and spokesperson for the COVID -19 Technical Committee in the state, Mr Rafiu Ajakaye, said the state had 3, 000 bed spaces at its isolation centres at Sobi Specialist Hospital, Ilorin and General Hospital, Offa.

“ Though there is an increasing number of COVID -19 patients in the state, we have enough bed spaces in our isolation centres and we also have about 600 bed spaces in the state pilgrims ’ camp in Ilorin which we have not even used , ” he said .
Meanwhile, in Osun, the Special Adviser to the state Governor on Education,Mr Jamiu Olawumi, said the state had enough bed spaces to cope with its coronavirus cases.

In Katsina, the government said there was no indication it would allocate schools or dormitories to serve as isolation centres for COVID – 19 patients, saying it had begun moves to construct additional isolation centres to the existing four.

On May 28, The Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire during the briefing by the Presidential Task Force on COVID – 19 in Abuja , added that the government anticipated the shortage of hospital bed spaces due to rising COVID -19 cases and therefore opted for the use of school dormitories as an alternative.

“ We need to continue increasing bed capacity to match the probable number of patients so that we do not experience horrific scenes of bed space shortages seen in some European hospitals.

“ In event of overflow, we can require hotels and school dormitories to be prepared for level 1 which is quarantine, and level 2 which is the isolation of COVID -19 positive with zero or mild symptoms, to free hospital beds to be dedicated to level 3 which are moderate to severe cases and level 4 which is the high dependency and Intensive care unit , ” he said.

He added that the Federal Government would require hotels and school dormitories to be prepared as quarantine and isolation centres in the event of overwhelming COVID -19 cases and the pressure on hospital beds.

He said , “ We are using a strategy that involves three types of isolation centres and If someone is asymptomatic and very mildly asymptomatic, they will be treated at home.

They will be isolated at home and we will visit them and give them the drugs that they will be taking and we will be visiting them to check their temperature on a daily basis That is if their house meets the requirements for self -isolation at home.

“ Some people’ s houses are too small; they don’ t have private toilets and so they cannot meet the criteria for self -isolation at home.

Those are the ones that we intend to isolate at the community- based or community-supported centres.

We have had a meeting with the PTF about the possible support from the Federal Government to establish these community centres.

“ We are going to start with about four of them and we are going to focus on the highest burdened local governments.

So , we are in the process of identifying four of them now,It may not necessarily be schools, it may be community centres ; it may be Hajj camps and areas that can accommodate quite a large number of people.

We have not started implementing but it is a discussion we are having with the Federal Government and we are in agreement about how to move forward.

“ The third level is the isolation centres that we have.

These are for moderate to severe COVID -19 complications. ”

This move is also partly based on the assertion of the Federal Ministry of Education in the third week of May that the government could not risk the reopening of schools until all measures had been put in place.

The Minister of State for Education, Emeka Nwajiuba, had said , “ We are not taking that risk yet, we are going to prepare as much as possible within the guidance that we are offered, working in conjunction with the World Health Organisation before we reopen schools. ”

Amid rising COVID – 19 cases, in an interview with Sunday PUNCH which confirmed to Campusinfo, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Ministry of Health , Ogboye , said the state was considering Hajj camps and possibly schools, as well as liaising with four endemic communities.

Adejunwon Emmanuel Olatunji, the suspended President of Students’ Union of Federal Polytechnic Ilaro, Ogun State, Saturday, dropped a suicide note on his Facebook page.

Adejunwon was arrested last February allegedly during initiation of new members and was subsequently paraded by the police at the Police Headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta where he denied even been a member of the cult group.

He rather claimed that the group was trying to initiate him when he was on his way to his Church on a Sunday.

He has since been arraigned in court where he pleaded not guilty to the offence brought against him.

But in a post, Saturday on his Facebook page, the suspended SUG President lamented that he has been abandoned to his fate alleging that there was no one to speak for him.

He said is offence for the arrest was standing against the management of the school on issues of hike in school and accommodation fees.

He however warned that no one should morn him after his demise.

He wrote, “Glory be to God for this probably the last breathe in my nostrils, no matter how fainting it may seem. More importantly, this may be the last thing I write since my hope to write statement of accounts, proffer economic solutions to the Nigeria financial problems has been dashed and shattered by the powers that be. I accepted to study Banking and Finance to fulfill my dreams but all I live to write now is suicide note.

“I was arrested on the 9th of February, 2020 and got transferred to the Nigeria Police Force Headquarter, Eleweran, Ogun State. I was detained for 144 hours before being charged to court finally on the 17th of February, 2020.

“It’s being 114 days now since my case got adjourned, and to my utmost dismay, no individual or group has done anything to revamp my hope.

“They say if you are silent in the days of adversity, you have taken the side of the oppressor. Now the question is, “Who is raising a voice in my favour?”

“Is it a crime to stand against the annihilation of the management against the students that gave me a mandate to defend their interest?

“Is it a crime for me to object the hike in accommodation price in the interest of striving Nigeria students?

“Is it a crime for me to send a red signal to the management in their quest to increase school fees, while pointing them to other means of IGR to execute their projects?

“Let no one mourn me when I finally pass on into the luminary realm, for when I need the continued support of activists, comrades, stakeholders, and sane individuals in the society to make me sail this trying time, no one, I mean no one was seen.”

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Office of the Ogun State Police Command, Abimbola Oyeyemi said his threat to commit suicide is not the business of the police saying that he should rather defend himself in court rather than committing suicide.

Oyeyemi said he was only trying to whip up sentiment adding that whoever intends suicide will not even tell anybody.

He said, “That he wants to commit suicide is not the police business. It is none of business.

“He was arrested for alleged cultism, he has been charged to court and the case is still in court. So, if he says he is innocent, he should go and defend himself in court.

“Anybody that wants to kill himself doesn’t need to tell everybody about it.

“He is only trying to whip up sentiment, unnecessary sentiment at that. He has been charged to court, so let him prove innocence in court”.

The management of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), Rivers, has directed compulsory use of face masks on its campuses to curtail spread of COVID-19 in the state.

Prof. Regina Ogali, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), made this known in a statement by the institution’s Deputy Registrar (Information), Dr Williams Wodi, in Port Harcourt on Saturday.

Ogali was quoted as having issued the directive during a meeting between principal officers and members of COVID-19 Steering Committee in the university.

Ogali, who currently oversees the affairs of UNIPORT in the absence of a substantive Vice Chancellor, said the decision was in-line with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) COVID-19 protocol.

“Henceforth, all staff, students and visitors to UNIPORT must fully observe the COVID-19 protocol as approved by NCDC and the World Health Organisation (WHO).

“We called this meeting with the COVID-19 Steering Committee, especially now that the number of confirmed cases in Rivers State is becoming scary by the day.

“To this end, we need to take proactive steps to safeguard the health status of staff, residents and visitors to the university.

“Also, we need to plan ahead of possible resumption of academic activities, if and when we are so directed by the Federal Government,” Ogali told the committee members.

She said that the university had started taking delivery of equipment and kits for its COVID-19 test centre and expressed optimism that the centre would become fully operational in July.

The deputy vice chancellor added that management would soon instal infrared thermometers, hand sanitisers and running water at strategic locations, including offices and faculty buildings.

She directed the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences in the university to start production of hand sanitisers in commercial quantity for distribution to the public.
“Also, we should begin to think seriously about encouraging our Information and Communication Technology Centre and ODel, a virtual centre, to work out modalities to enable UNIPORT to begin online learning,” she noted.
The Chairman of the committee, Prof. Iyeopu Siminialayi, attributed the rising number of confirmed coronavirus cases to increase of testing in the state.

Siminialayi, Provost of the College of Health Sciences at the University, said that work was ongoing to convert the International Students Centre to a temporary quarantine and isolation centre.
On his part, Dr Datonye Alasia, another member of the committee and an infectious disease expert, said that about 40 per cent to 50 per cent of people tested for COVID-19 turned out positive.

Miss Egoagwuagwu Agnes Madufokwa and Nwobi Okwuchukwu David, the two top scoring candidates in the 2020 Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examinations.
Miss Egoagwuagwu Agnes Madufokwa, from Ihiala in Ihiala local government area, applied to study Industrial Chemical Production at the University of Ibadan and scored 365, the highest JAMB score in 2020.
Nwobi Okwuchukwu David scoreuid the second highest grade with 363 and applied to study Mechanical Engineering at Kwara State University.

Speaking to Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS), Anambra state Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenement, Mr C. Don Adinuba, said the Governor is always “elated at the wonderful news of the performances of Anambra sons and daughters the world over, and is eager to meet and honour Egoagwuagwu, David and their parents as soon as possible”.

Continuing, Adinuba said, “The performances of Egoagwuagwu Agnes Madufokwa and Nwobi Okwuchukwu David, as the two top candidates in the 2020 JAMB examinations is a continuation of the tradition of excellence that Ndi Anambra are known for. For Egoagwuagwu, her mother, Ijeoma Madufokwa in her days also achieved great academic feats. She was the best graduating Chemical engineering student, graduating with 2nd class honours, upper division (2/1) in Chemical Engineering in 1997 at the University of Benin. She was also the best graduating student in the Master in Business Administration (MBA cohort 4) class of 2007, at the Lagos Business School”.
Chief Emeka Madufokwa said his daughter Egoagwuagwu who is 16 years old, and the only girl among 3 older brothers and 1 younger brother achieved the feat through hardwork. “She has received other offers from universities in America including partial scholarships so the family is undecided yet on which she will go for. Egoagwuagwu is looking for scholarship to support the partial scholarship offered her by some US Universities. Our family is blessed as her older brothers are also doing exceptionally well in American Ivy League universities”.

Mrs Ijeoma Madufokwa, Egoagwuagwu’s mother described her as a “normal teenager, domesticated and fun loving. She loves books a lot though and likes to read, even during trips to the village during Christmas or during family holidays, she always brings her books along. She pushes herself so hard. As a senior secondary (SS2) student, she sat for GCE examinations as a private candidate and achieved 6As and 2Bs, she worried so much about the 2Bs. That’s the type of person she is”.

Commenting, Professor Kate Omenugha, Anambra State Commissioner for Basic Education said; “I am not surprised that Governor Obiano is planning to host the 2 top scoring candidates in this year’s JAMB examinations. We have a long list of such honours by His Excellency for performing Ndi Anambra in the educational sector. I recall the honours done to Anambra school teacher, Rose Nkemdilim Obi who emerged winner of the maiden edition of the Maltina Teacher-of-the-Year in 2015, Anambra teachers and schools that excelled at the 2019 President’s Teachers and Schools Awards for Excellence in Education organized by the Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Education. Anambra State won prizes in the following categories; best public secondary school in the country, the best secondary school administrator, and for producing both the first and second runners up in the Best Administrator category”.

“Recall also that in 2018, the Governor honoured our students from Regina Pacis Secondary School, Onitsha who won the World Technovation Challenge Competition in the USA, and students of St John’s Science and Technical College, Alor, in Idemili South Local Government Area who won Bronze Medal at the International Festival of Engineering, Science and Technology which took place in Tunisia in 2019.

Concluding, Professor Omenugha said that Governor Obiano is a champion of educational development, “through his support, Anambra Teaching -On -Air programme, a partnership project between Anambra state Ministry of Basic Education and Anambra Broadcasting Service has become a resounding success and a reference point in Nigeria during this Covid-19 lockdown period”.
