Federal government has warned Oyo state of its decision to reopen schools, saying the decision to reopen schools at this time despite the increasing cases of COVID-19 is insensitive

The Oyo state government had announced earlier that primary six students of the state and also Junior secondary school 3 with SSS3 can resume school from June 29,2020

Speaking at the briefing of the presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 on Monday, the Minister of state for education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba state his response on the decision of Oyo state allowing schools to resume

According to her, she said,the decision of Oyo state government contradicts with that of the federal government’s

“The ministry of education did not give any guideline to Oyo state to reopen schools. We also think that that is a little bit contradictory,” he said.

“However, Oyo state, like all other sub-nationals, have governors and under our constitution, governors are responsible for their states.

“But you must appreciate that the primary purpose of government is the security of its citizens. Security is not only when people start shooting guns at you; public health is key and primary in that primary security delivery.

“And that’s why we are extremely cautious in making any pronouncement around this because the education sector owns the largest number of infrastructure in the country.

“For you to even begin to decide to unroll and unleash this in the public in the face of a pandemic, is, to be the very least, insensitive.”

He’s against the motion on the position of resumption because ” government cannot even forecast where this pandemic is most positioned at”.

“So the least we can do at the moment is to keep our children, our most prized assets, the future of Nigeria, under lock and key first. When we are sure that it’s safe to release them, gladly we will,” he added.

Meanwhile, he appealed to parents to remain patient consigning the resumption of schools, stating that ” we dont want any of our children arriving at the doctors clinic at all.

Across the country, there are 20,244 confirmed COVID-19 cases, out of which 12,847 are active cases, 6,879 persons have recovered, and 518 deaths have been recorded.

The decision was reached through a voting system but some universities said they will not go below 180 as their cut off mark.

There are 182-degree awarding institutions in Nigeria, 10 of these said their minimum cut off mark is 200 and above, 11 institutions said theirs will remain at 190 and above.

About 51 institutions said their cut off mark is benched at 180 and above. Also 64 institutions’ cut off mark will be from 170 and above; 112 institutions said their cut off mark is pegged at 160 and above while 69 said their cut off mark is benched at 160 and below.

According to a spokeman in behalf of JAMB, Fabian Benjamin

“no uniform UTME minimum score for admission” as each institution determines and submits to JAMB its minimum UTME score “after having analysed the UTME performances of its applicants against its available quota.”

“There is a layer of misconceptions on what is generally described as uniform minimum national UTME score for admission into tertiary institutions in Nigeria. For long, many candidates and some members of the general public have come under erroneous impression that there is a minimum national UTME score, which they also refer to as cut off point,” he said.

According to him, the UTME score is not the sole determinant of placement of candidates into tertiary institutions.

“The undue attention to the so-called national minimum UTME score (UTME cut off point) is a major source of failure of many ill-informed candidates who assumed that they have finally attained the benchmark having achieved the so-called minimum national score or cut off point for admission.”

The Oyo State Government has commenced training for teachers from all Local Government Universal Basic Education Authorities, ahead of June 29 resumption for Pry 6, JSS3 and SS3 students on the basic procedures for the handling COVID-19 in schools.

In a release issued by Olamide Adeniji, Press Officer to SUBEB Chairman and made available to naijatodaynews.com said,” Executive Chairman, Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board, Dr. Nureni Adeniran revealed that the training on ‘Reopening of Schools’ is part of the State Government’s pre-opening mandate”.

“He added that the training is targeted at getting participants prepared ahead of any possible identification of coronavirus case, with a view to ensuring that teachers and pupils remain safe while in schools”.

“The workshop is expected to equip participants with necessary knowledge on Covid-19 and how to manage it during these trying times among pupils. Let me add that the workshop has representation from each zone in the State and is aimed at ensuring the safety of children and teachers in the State”, he said.
Adeniran further said, “asking only Pry 6 pupils to return to school is strategic. Each school is spacious enough to contain all Primary 6 pupils in the State. So, there is actually no cause for alarm”.

“He also added that OyoSUBEB would look into constituting an Advisory Board to complement the efforts of the State Government on combating COVID-19, while every school has been mandated to adhere to all precautionary measures during this period”.

“Dr. Adeniran said that with the threat of coronavirus pandemic and the need for pupils to return to schools, it was imperative for the State Government to train teachers who would be in regular touch with the pupils on how to interact, while they also ensure their safety”.

“To contain the spread of the disease in schools, Oyo State Government under the leadership of Governor Seyi Makinde has deployed trainers who would train teachers. These trained teachers would in turn train their colleagues on precautionary measures and how to manage each pupil after the long stay at home”, Adeniran said.

“Futhermore, Dr. Adeniran said that the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board has distributed facemasks to all non-teaching and teaching staffs across all Local Government Universal Basic Education Authority in the State”.

“This, he said is part of the Board’s precautionary measures taken to prepare every staff member for the task ahead. He added that each school would provide wash hand basins, and alcohol based hand sanitizers”.Adeniji concluded

There’s no uniform UTME minimum score for admission, JAMB insists..

ABUJA–THE Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB,has told candidates jubilating for meeting its set benchmark for admission into tertiary institutions not to rely on the cut-off point.

JAMB said meeting its cut-off mark was not a guarantee for admission,explaining that there were other different factors for consideration for admission.

ADMISSION PROCEDURES [NIGERIAN, FOREIGN & TRANSFER/DIRECT ENTRY STUDENTS]

1. Nigerian Applicants:
Nigerian students seeking admission into the University must take the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Examination or UTME and obtain the approved cut-off mark for that year. Also the candidates are required to present 5 credits at no more than two sittings. Please refer to your respective faculties for full requirements, other useful information and/or specifications.

2. Foreign Applicants:
Unlike Nigerian applicants, all foreign applicants must provide their corresponding Examination Results as well as academic transcript of previous high schools.

3. Transfer & Direct Entry Students:
Direct Entry candidates are those who have completed one of the following: OND, HSE, HND, ‘A’ level GCE, SBS, and IJMB or any other higher qualification. For this method of entry to NTNU, candidates who have 9 points or above will be admitted to 200 Level based on the three subjects taken. Generally, those candidates who have below 9 points will be admitted to commence at 100 Level.

Transfer candidates from national universities are generally given preference except in cases where the candidate is on academic probation. In such cases, the candidate may be admitted to a lower level. For this method of admission, a grade point average of 1.50 CGPA (3rd class) on a 5.0 scale will permit the candidate to transfer and commence from their appropriate level.

An undergraduate student of Unilag who was allegedly mocked for losing her virginity, has been linked to the gang-rape of her two female friends by 7 boys.

Funke Adeyanju who shared the story on Facebook, said the incident occurred shortly after the rape victims arrived their friend’s cousin’s house to deliver a surprise birthday gift to her.

According to Adeyanju, the girls are year one students of the University of lagos, between the ages of 18-19 years.

She said the girls whose drinks were spiked before the sad incident took place, have been taken to a hospital in Ikeja while the male suspects have been arrested.
