Oyo state govt modifies resumption of schools in the state; Teachers to resume on June 29 while students on July 6
Barring any last-minute change, the Oyo State Government has modified the resumption of schools in the state that was earlier scheduled for June 29.
The Government had earlier directed all terminal classes including Primary Six (Pry 6), Junior Secondary School Three (JSS3) and Senior Secondary School Three (SSS3) to resume on June 29 ahead of preparations for their various exams.
However, a statement released today by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Seyi Makinde, Mr Taiwo Adisa, said Teachers will be the only ones to resume on Monday, June 29 while students in terminal classes will resume on July 6.
Adisa said the state government will on July 15 review the compliance level in the different schools to determine whether the remaining classes would resume or wait till September.
“By the new arrangement, Teachers are to resume to the schools on Monday June 29, 2020, while students in critical classes including Primary 6, JSS3 and SS3 will resume a week later on July 6, 2020.
As of Monday, June 22, no fewer than 372 Heads of Schools have been trained by the EOC on the management of the COVID-19 containment procedures, while each of the schools is to appoint an Incident Manager, who will ensure compliance with the approved COVID-19 protocol.
Each student is expected to wear face masks, while the schools are to prepare well laid out hand washing spots to guarantee regular washing of hands by the students and teachers.
The Task Force also resolved that by July 15, the state government would have reviewed the situation with the schools and come to a conclusion whether the remaining classes would be able to resume or whether the students would have to wait to resume the new session in September 2020.” the statement read
The schools were closed down as part of measures to contain the spread of COVID19 in the state. With 988 confirmed cases, Oyo state is the fourth state with the highest number of the novel virus.

School Reopening: FG Presents Proposed Guidelines to National Assembly
The Federal Government has submitted proposed guidelines for the reopening of schools across the country to the National Assembly.
The Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba made the presentation on Tuesday during a meeting with the Senate Committee on Basic and Secondary Education.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, he intimated the lawmakers of the ministry’s plans for students to resume across the country

The FG had in March shut schools across the Federation as part of measures to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus disease.
At the presentation today, the minister said, “In the document provided, we have suggested how we can move our education sector forward during this pandemic.
“We don’t want to make it known at this time so that some people will not take our proposed guidelines for school reopening.
“Even if the Senate has not called us, we would have come to you to discuss with you because we have already discussed with the House of Representatives.
“The documents were presented to you so that you can criticise and make inputs as major stakeholders.”
Vice-Chairperson of the Committee, Akon Eyakenyi, who presided over the meeting, expressed fears that the academic calendar could be distorted in public schools where no visible arrangement was being made to teach pupils and students at home, unlike their private school counterparts.
Eyakenyi said, “Even when the students in the cities have access to education programmes on radio and television, what of those in the villages? What do we do so that we don’t shut them out?

“If the government can give guidelines for the reopening of churches and mosques, stakeholders in the education sector could also hold a meeting with the government to agree on guidelines for school reopening.
“All we need to do is to come up with measures that would ensure the safety of students and teachers.
“We can design a plan that would ensure that not all the students resume at the same time. We could probably start with the exit classes.
“We could have the number of students that would go to school for both morning and afternoon sessions.
“We have to be innovative in our approach to save our educational sector in this country because nobody knows how long the virus will be with us.”

Admission Offer Should Not Be Made Outside JAMB CAPS, Minister Warns
Candidates seeking admission into various tertiary institutions in the country have again been warned to desist from backdoor admissions which are admissions given to candidates without recourse to the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) introduced by JAMB.
The Hon. Minister of State for Education, Dr. Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, handed down this warning at a virtual 2020 Policy Meeting on Admissions to tertiary institutions.
He noted that CAPS was implemented in order to engender fairness and transparency in the conduct of admissions.
The Minister said the flagrant abuse or jettisoning of CAPS endangers the system, jeopardizes the future of candidates, and compromises the integrity of the admission process. He pointed out that CAPS, an automated platform developed by JAMB, was designed to enhance transparency and ensure inclusiveness in the conduct of admissions by tertiary institutions.
Dr. Nwajiuba said, “Permit me to also restate that no admission offer should be made to any candidate outside CAPS. Those institutions offering admissions outside CAPS are endangering the system and confusing the candidates. The discipline imposed by the system makes for a healthy and transparent process which, as we know, is the hallmark of the Buhari administration.”
The Minister finally commended the Governing Board of JAMB, Management, and Staff for the uncommon transformations in the Board to the admiration of all and pledges the support of the Ministry towards supporting the board in its Giant strides.
