Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka dismisses Professor over alleged discovery of COVID-19 drug

Management of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State has dismissed Dean, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Professor Ikemefuna Uzochukwu, over alleged discovery of drug for COVID-19 cure at the institution.

Professor Uzochukwu, who was Principal Investigator, COVID-19 Drug Design, Discovery and Development Project at the School of Pharmacy had publicly claimed that his group had identified nine existing drugs for cure of the pandemic.

He also said the team discovered 14 phytochemicals from natural products, three N-acetyl glucosamine analogs with good binding affinities, as well as glycoprotein S and protease, being two important COVID-19 proteins, using computer-aided drug design tools.

Explaing the benefits of the findings, Uzochukwu said, “These may be potential inhibitors and possible drug or lead candidates for the treatment and prophylaxis of Covid-19,” noting that his group has found existing (approved) drugs that could be used for pre-and post-exposure chemoprophylaxis and treatment of COVID-19.

But in a swift reaction, management of the university admitted that a team of researchers had embarked on the process of drug development for coronavirus, stressing, “No drug has been developed yet contrary to insinuations that the university had discovered a cure for the pandemic.”

A statement issued by Acting Head, Information and Public Relations Unit of the institution, Mrs. Chika Gladys Ene, noted that it became necessary to set the records straight over the alleged discovery of COVID-19 drug credited to it.

“Management wishes to set the records straight on the SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) drug discovery credited to our institution. Our team of researchers swung into action following the announcement the disease in Nigeria.

“One of the research groups in the university that specialises in computer-aided drug discovery identified a target on the virus using computer simulation. It also identified compounds that can possibly attack the target.

“All these were done in silico (inside the computer). No wet laboratory experiment has been carried out to confirm that what was seen in the computer is possible in real life.

“In other words, the result is yet to get into the first stage of drug discovery process and neither preclinical, nor clinical trials have been carried out.

“Hence, we cannot say that a cure has been found, but there is an on-going research for the discovery of a cure. Notwithstanding, our team of researchers are committed to the progress of its development,” the statement reads.

Federal University of Technology, Akure Researchers Recommend Cocoa-Zobo-Ginger Beverage as Immunity Booster against Diseases

In the wake of the rampaging Corona Virus Pandemic, a group of Researchers at the Federal University of Technology Akure,FUTA led by Nathaniel Fagbemi a Professor of Food Science Technology , has recommended the regular consumption of a blend of Cocoa-Zobo-Ginger beverage which has the potential to boost immunity of people against communicable diseases and viruses .

The Cocoa-Zobo-Ginger beverage with high antioxidant potential was developed by the FUTA Researchers from blends of Hibiscus sabdariffa (zobo) and ginger blends and Natural Cocoa Powder.

The cocoa–zobo–ginger beverage possesses high antioxidant activities and show potential as a health security beverage that can boost immunity against diseases and viruses.

The researchers say though Oxidation reactions are necessary for life especially during respiration, complex electron transfer and incomplete reduction of oxygen can result into generation of highly reactive and damaging Reactive Oxygen Species leading to oxidative stress. Oxidative stress has been associated with the cause of significant damage to biological molecules such as lipids, proteins, DNA and development of chronic diseases such as cancer, arteriosclerosis, coronary heart disease, diabetes, neurological disorder and weakening of immune system.

They said research has shown that though the human body has physiological defense mechanism, which produces antioxidants to reduce oxidative damage, additional antioxidants may be necessary during severe oxidative stress and for constant maintenance of oxidative balance.

Functional beverages that are high in antioxidants like the Zobo-Ginger-Cocoa drink can adequately protect against oxidative stress and boost immunity in case of stress or diseases.

They said a better immunity help to fend off diseases and also improves chances of survival of ill persons.

The Cocoa-Zobo-Ginger beverage could be made in cold or hot water extracts making it vital in the hot tropical climate as well as in the cold Harmattan seasons obtained in Nigeria.

They said its ingredients are easily available and can be made and enjoyed by all strata of the society.

The University has the Cocoa-Zobo-Ginger beverage blends in sachets which has been developed and exhibited in many NUC organized university trade fairs and scientific exhibitions and would be ready to enter into partnership with Government agencies and other interested stakeholders for mass production .

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Joseph Fuwape, said FUTA will continue to respond to emerging national and global trends and challenges through relevant researches and product development.

JAMB remits N3.5 billion to federal Government Consolidated Account for 2020

THE Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has made an interim remittance of N3.5 billion to the Federal Government consolidated account for 2020.

This is in addition to more than N3.5 billion paid to candidates as reduction of cost of ePIN as directed by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Head of Media of JAMB, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, made this known on Sunday in a statement in Abuja.

He said this was in line with the expected remittance the JAMB Registrar, Professor Is-haq Oloyede, had made commitment to remit.
The statement read: “The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has made an interim remittance of N3.5 billion to the Federal Government consolidated account for the 2020 expected remittance in line with Professor Is-haq Oloyede’s commitment to remit wholly, excess funds generated from its operations to the Federal Government.

“It had earlier made the payment of over N3.5 billion to candidates by way of reduction of N1,500 from the cost of each ePIN sold to each candidates as directed by the president totaling over N3.5 billion with the assurance to remit more as soon as it operations are concluded and proper audit of its books done.
“From the outset, it had been the intention of the present leadership of the board to return to federal coffers whatever is left unutilised from its operational imperatives.

“The immediate benefit of the move manifested in the reduction by President Muhammadu Buhari of the UTME registration fee payable by candidates from N5000 to N3500 which entails the transfer of over N3 billion to candidates and guardians annually via the reduction in the cost of application documents.”
